Myself and 17 year old. Short break! Last minute - what should we do apart from Guinea factory. We don’t want to do sports. We like education, art galleries and wildlife but dislike zoos.

Any pointers will be appreciated!!

I’m assuming 3 pin plug - but off to google!

It’s a 3 pin plug yeah!

Art Gallery in Merrion Square. Pop in to see the Bog Bodies in the National Museum on Kildare Street. Both free (donation)

Where are you staying (roughly)? Weather looking bright and clear so head for the sea on the DART - Dun Laoghaire, Dalkey, Bray or Howth as you see fit. Have a Teddy's ice cream.

If you like walking, do Bray Head, Howth Head or Killiney Hill. Have another ice cream.

We are staying at Dublin one hotel I think! Thanks so far. Young adult loves art galleries and animals. Dislikes anything grim, creepy etc so any dungeons is a big fat no etc
We are travelling light but could fit in binoculars etc

I've just looked that hotel up and honestly, it's not in a very nice part of town (I am sure loads of people will disagree as is always the case on Dublin threads).
But you're well served by public transport so plan your trip rather than wandering aimlessly in that part of town.
Botanic gardens, a bit further north are nice.

If you don't like creepy, avoid the bog bodies!

Airfield is a cute working farm and right by Dundrum big shopping centre if you get out that far. The LUAS tram would take you there.

There are loads of lovely things to do in Dublin but you need a bit of a plan.

Airfield is a working farm and gardens in Dublin, it's a fun space to experience a farm to fork story with a charitable mission.

The hotel is just to stay in and we aren’t going to be going out in the evening. Neither are we arriving very early or very late. So I hope we will be safe!

Trinity walking tour, see the book of Kells, visit the national gallery, or the natural history museum (the dead zoo) walk around St Stephens green, go for lunch on grafton Street or try the Shelbourne hotel for a quick coffee. Visit the Guinness store house, or you could try one of the Whiskey museums.

Enjoy.

See if the boat tours of Dublin Bay are operating. Bull Island nature reserve is right at the city's doorstep. Dalley Island is also nice (very small). You can sometimes spot seals.

BeHere · 01/04/2025 15:45

Kilmainham Gaol is well worth a visit if you like history. I also enjoyed the tourbus when we went, if that's your thing.

turkeyboots · 01/04/2025 15:47

And if you want to see wildlife there are deer in Phoenix Park. The zoo is there too, but also loads of wild deer.

The Viking Splash tour is good. Informative and fun.
Take care.
Dublin 1 isn’t great.
The authorities have let it down ( along with the toerags who give the area a bad name ) sadly for those living and visiting there.
There’s also a Ghost Bus tour- great fun.
There’s an Afternoon Tea Bus too that would be interesting.
The weather is great today so 🤞you get the same.

Joolsin · 01/04/2025 16:13

You've picked a lucky week for the weather - it's to be gorgeous every day. Some great suggestions from PPs - I would also go to parks - St Stephen's Green in the centre of Dublin 2 is so lovely on a sunny day.

Usou · 01/04/2025 17:44

The Chester Beatty museum right next to Dublin Castle is great, and they have a nice cafe. The National Gallery is also great.

An easy way to get to the city centre from your hotel is from Drumcondra station just up the road. There are regular commuter trains and it's only a few minutes to either Connolly Station, Tara, or Pearce Station for the National Gallery. You can get tickets, or just use a Leap Card (cheaper and easy).

Giddykiddy · 01/04/2025 17:55

recently visited Kilmainham Gaol and EPIC - both great- also love the national gallery by St Stephen's Green - they had a wonderful Caravaggio there in the summer and I love Jack Yeats work

AdaColeman · 01/04/2025 18:41

The National Library of Ireland in Kildare Street is still showing its fantastic W B Yeats exhibition, packed with information and personal detail, beautifully presented. The building itself is stunning too, so worth a visit, and not only for James Joyce fans.

A stroll around the garden of Merrion Square would be lovely on a warm spring day. Look out for the statue of Oscar Wilde, his house is on the corner of the square.
The natural history section of the museum on Merrion Street is temporarily closed for renovation.

I like Café en Seine in Dawson Street for a reviving coffee and cake, or afternoon tea at The Shelbourne on St Stephens Green, or the café at the Kilkenny Centre Nassau Street for a snack.
Have a wonderful time, Dublin is a great place.

The Leprechaun Museum!

CrowsInMyGarden · 01/04/2025 19:53

Irish Rock n Roll Museum is really good

Definitely do the Trinity College/ Book of Kells OP and book a guided tour- we did this very recently and it was excellent !!
You could also do Kilmainham Gaol/ Jail. Even if it is booked up - check each morning as they put any return tickets on .
Edited to add, a tour of Dublin Castle also a good shout.

Kilmainham Gaol is quite upsetting (or at least it should be if done properly) so maybe not great for someone who doesn't like grim.
OP, I'd stay outside as much as possible - you are blessed with sunshine - make the most of it.

BeHere · 01/04/2025 20:34

Mmm true I missed the creepy dungeon aversion bit. It's fascinating but yeah, not a light one.

culturevulture1984 · 01/04/2025 20:38

Tenement Museum on Henrietta Street, Dublin 1.

An underrated gem.

The guided tours are fascinating and thought provoking.

mustytrusty · 01/04/2025 20:41

Kilmainham jail was brilliant. One of the best places I've ever visited. Brilliant guides and incredibly, humbling stories. I think you have to book it but it's well worth it.

mustytrusty · 01/04/2025 20:41

Also, the best chicken wings I've ever tasted in the Elephant and Castle.

FreddoSwaggins · 01/04/2025 20:59

Was going to say you may need to book Kilmainham jail it's an excellent visit but not got a happy history. Don't discount Kilmaiiham entirely though the Museum of Modern Art is there.

Tour of Dublin Castle is a good call. Take in tge Chester Beaty while you are in the castle - and why not do the Revenue abd Garda museum (small and dont take long abd are actually less rubbish then they sound!!

Collins Barrack also worth checking out.
Kilmainham

Oh and call into Lidl on Aungier Street. Sounds like a mad suggestion bit it has a glass floor in two parts through which you can see medieval ruins.

Also if you do Airfield Ballaly Luas stop is the better option (minor thing!!)

Hedgehogsaremything · 01/04/2025 21:12

I visited the Irish Emigration Museum and it was excellent. https://epicchq.com/ Plenty to keep a 17 year old interested and well put together.
