Myself and 17 year old. Short break! Last minute - what should we do apart from Guinea factory. We don’t want to do sports. We like education, art galleries and wildlife but dislike zoos.

Any pointers will be appreciated!!

I’m assuming 3 pin plug - but off to google!

If you're wandering around the town in the sunshine, you'll spot a lot of pieces of sculpture, and one of the most spectacular is the life size group depicting survivors of the Famine on the north bank of the Liffey at Custom House Quay, on their way to embark for a new life in America.

Could anyone help me clarify something about tickets for Dublin Castle - I think that on-line you can only book the self-guided tour tickets ( approx €8) which I did BUT when we got to the castle we went to the ticket desk and were able to “ upgrade” our ticket to a guided tour- you can only book the guided tour at the ticket desk. We had booked for 11am but when we upgraded to the guided tour we had to wait until noon. I still think it was worth it- you learn so much more on an accompanied tour. I hope that all makes sense

I second the Tenement Museum in Henrietta Street. The Little Museum of Dublin is also good and it's right beside St Stephen's Green for a stroll. Grafton Street for shopping. Guinness Storehouse and Book of Kells also a must. Walk around the Georgian quarter (Merrion Square, Fitzwilliam Square, Baggot Street) and see the famous Doors of Dublin. Take in some trad music nearby in O'Donohue's pub. Dawson Lounge on Dawson Street is the smallest pub in Ireland which your DD might enjoy seeing. Enjoy your visit!

Also recommend Viking Splash - great fun!

It’s a gorgeous morning here in Dublin.
Enjoy ☘️

We have had an amazing day. Did some shops, Phoenix Park and then Dublin Zoo - it is absolutely amazing and they loved it. The Guinness factory and a drink. My daughter made friends with a few horses. After getting up at 4.50 am this morning we are now tucked up in bed and the hotel is actually pretty nice 👍and both of us watching Netflix.

I was thinking about you today OP, wondering how you were all getting on, You have picked the best week to come to Ireland. Hopefully you will have another great day tomorrow 🇮🇪

Notimeforaname · 02/04/2025 19:55

Glad youre both enjoying your break!
I definitely recommend taking the DART. If you go south you can stop at Dún laoghaire , Bray or Greystones. Wander round and stop for food and drinks.
Or go north to Howth.
It's forecast to be cloudier tomorrow but still dry and lovely to walk around in!!

Loving Dublin. Did Trinity today (met a nice professor who brought us a coffee), did the Book of Kells, the Long library and an also a guided tour. Then went to the National Gallery, did a bit of moving around on the DART etc and the Park with the Oscar Wilde statue. DC is very happy.

things we have noticed:
you don’t get long to cross the road!
lots of outdoor smoking (we have none back where we live in the UK)
people are friendly
lots of green
lots of guinness
lots of nice green spaces
some things are very expensive compared to England

Ps DC is interested in doing a boat ride so just about to investigate

You have done so well! It's lovely you are having a good time, people can be so negative about Dublin.

And for tomorrow - everyone crosses on amber! (or orange as we used to call it)

Out of the centre tomorrow and to the sea!

@SomersetBrie anywhere you would recommend to see wildlife? Not too far from Dublin we have the leap visitor cards for train and bus. Thanks

If you can at all, @MyBusyBeevisit Powerscourt Demesne, in Wicklow.
You could catch a tour bus out to it.
it is beautiful.
The drive up to the “big house” is magical - if you get a bus tour to it ask to be let out at the gate to walk up- it’s not a long walk but the views are special.
In the house- free entrance, you can buy a ticket to visit the gardens - well worth it in good weather.
And have lunch or coffee and cake in the Avoca that is there.

I mentioned Airfield above, which is a farm (which used to have a lovely cafe, not sure now) and a nice walk. On the LUAS (Dundrum)
Glendalough (day trip from Dublin, St Kevin's bus from Stephen's Green around 11) is lovely for deer and mountains.
I am not sure about "wildlife" as such but lots of natural beauty around Killiney Hill and Dalkey.
Is it still sunny? (I'm in UK but from Dublin)

turkeyboots · 04/04/2025 13:20

Not a lot of wildlife to be found round Dublin, beyond seagulls, pigeons and the deer in Phoenix Park. You might see various seabirds (and maybe Puffins) and seals at Bull Island, Howth or Malahide. https://www.visitdublin.com/things-to-do/nature-wildlife
And i believe there are Wallbies on Lambay Island?

Sadly the sun has gone @SomersetBrie- it’s been a bit drizzly here in Dublin today.

MyBusyBee · 04/04/2025 18:53

On our way back but had a busy, busy day.

Howth and cliff top walk and deer park, a boat tour round the Eye and also of course taking in a number of close up to seals, plenty of birds including puffins.

Then we went to Powerscourt and what a beautiful house and gardens - very nice. Long day and on our way back we were up at 6 am and not back yet but we have had a lovely day and it’s been colder but still dry !!

thank you off back to Blighty in the morning

loved it though 🇮🇪

Very early for puffins - not sure if that is worrying or not, I thought they were more a summer bird.
I've never seen one in Ireland, have always wanted to!

Sounds like you've packed loads in. Make sure you come back to future "should I visit Dublin?" threads and give your review.

MyBusyBee · 04/04/2025 20:13

We only saw two, lots of gannets though! And 3 seals!
