Canary Islands for retired but active couple - not requiring sports bars, English or Irish pubs! An alternative to Corealejo in Fuerteventura please (we love it there!)

Hi there. Since December 2023 me and my fella have been to Corralejo around 8 - 10 times. We have stayed in a lovely apart hotel all inclusive and also a fabulous Air BnB apartment.sharing a pool with two other apartments. I prefer the apartment set up and now we go for that option, booking our own flights and saving a fortune. I would like a change at some point but not sure where to try. Not keen on Tenerife, Costa Adeje as it's so built up and the same with Lanzarote. Costa Teguise. Not sure about Gran Canaria either. Any nice accommodation in Puerto del Carmen. Lanzarote? I know it's busy but I remember there being a long promenade there. Sorry if I sound fussy but I am when it comes to holidays. I have managed to plan great holiday for 2 weeks with two of us for under £1000. I know Corralejo divides opinion but everyone had different needs. We tried Calete de Fuste but not for us as its a man made resort. All we want is nice accommodation, seaside, sunshine, places to walk to or go to by bus and a reasonable budget...it can be done in Corralejo but not sure where else? PS just returned from Argentina on a self organised tour which was half the price of a similar package!

Puerto Mogan in Gran Canaria is stunning

We had a lovely holiday there last year. Just enough to see and do for a week, and no loud late night bars etc.

We like Playa Blanca, Lanzarote too. We've been twice and find it a very relaxing place to be.

Los Gigantes in Tenerife? A small low key resort with mountain and coastal walks nearby. Lots of padel courts around as well if that’s your thing?

Thanks for that suggestion. Where do you stay?

I stayed in the Holiday Property Bond site. It was lovely. I think non-bond holders can stay but I’m sure it must be expensive. I went with DM who is a bond holder.

the whole island is very quiet and beautiful.

We’ve been to La Palma twice and we absolutely love it. It’s very green, has a wonderful landscape and very little light pollution so star gazing there is amazing.

It’s not like the other Canary Islands at all. It’s like going back in time. They sweep the streets in the capital with long handled dustpans and brushes. We stayed at the La Palma Princess hotel, which was all inclusive and very nice.

There are Air BnBs around the islands and a couple of promenades. If you were wanting restaurants etc you’d have to stay more towards the capital.

We like Fuerteventura, too. We’ve stayed just outside Morro Jable, it’s not overly quiet. There’s quite a bit going on. We preferred it to Corralejo, tbh. We don’t like Lanzarote at all.

We’re currently plotting the walks we want to do, any recommendations?

Arrieta in Lanzarote is a lovely little village with a few restaurants (seafood is lovely)- if you’re happy to get a hire car to see a bit of the island - there are buses to the main town though! Lanzarote is super easy to drive around (and I hate driving abroad) and the bus service is great, as long as you don’t expect one every 10 mins. Most buses go via the capital, Arrecife, so you hop on one and change to head to different parts of the island.

We didn’t do any walks, because I’m disabled, so I can’t recommend any sorry.

Plays Blanca would also be my suggestion or up in the hills in actual Teguise (NOT Costa Teguise).

We went there last summer and I was sceptical, if im honest, never been to Lanzarote but been to all the tacky resorts in Tenerife and Cran Canaria. I was really impressed with Lanzarote. we stayed in Playa Blanca and hired a car and drove round the island. It was all very nice except for Costa Teguise which is scruffy irish pubs etc.

Have you considered Madeira instead - we never had but saw Michael Portillo programme last week - it’s sub tropical, stunning mountain scenery and great for walking. Not too fussed about canaries other than for winter sun.

I saw some of that programme and thought it looked absolutely ravishing, especially the flora and the hiking along the little irrigation channels!

Teguise is very nice. Not on the coast though and it gets HOT in summer so if staying there take the bus to Costa for a beach day - the beaches are lovely there & in summer there’s a lovelt bay for swimming. Plenty of villas. I enjoyed a walk around the Cesar Manrique house nearby more than I thought I would.

Yes it looks lovely..I had thought of there. Any recommendations for places to stay?

We went to Puerto Mogán after recommendations on here. We stayed at Cordial but in the Solaz apartments as wanted a bit more space. Hotel and area were lovely so would definitely recommend.

We stayed at the Livvo hotel right on the sea front, I'd definitely recommend it. Very comfortable and an excellent location.

@Moier Thanks so much for your advice and everyone else for ideas. I have been looking at Casas del Sol in Playa Blanca and it looks great. It also comes well within my budget for 14 days in September. I had a look on Trip Advisor and different properties had individual reviews..there were a few to avoid. If you know of any properties you could recommend that would be brilliant. Many thanks again.

Having our own there .. I've not seen many others.. if you look on the map it shows if any up hill.
But it's not a bad hill and if you have hire car you can drive up to take cases/ shopping etc ..but then have to park back in car park.
Photos show inside.. might be a couple of not so nice ones... but overall l think most are lovely..if you like to stay on your patio look for one with sunbeds and outside table.. although it's lovely round the pool and very quiet. You cam walk across the road to the Spar and butchers.. and the few restaurants there are all lovely.. especially the Irish Anvil and The curry house.. if hiring a car use Autoreisen.. book on line pay with debit card at airport.. no hidden extras and price you see is price you pay... it's a Canarian firm. If not there is taxis right out side airport.
And a bus stop right across from casas del sol.
They do get booked up quickly.

Moier · 31/03/2025 12:16

P.S we love Coralejo also .. so l think you will definitely like Playa Blanca.. no high rise.. all painted white.. can be as quiet as you like.. please visit the Marina at the far end... Faro park is great for restaurants...at the other end.
The 130 bus takes you all around Playa blanca in a circle.. getting on and off where you want.
Playa Blanca is actually over 7 km long with various parts to it.
Casas del sol is opposite the ferry port.. which is now new and lovely.. but definitely not noisy or busy.
Papagyo centre also has lovely restaurants( even an English fish and chip shop lol).
Being south of the island Playa Blanca tends to be warmer..
Hope you decide on it.
Anything else feel free to ask me.

@Moier that's all brilliant advice thanks so much. Booking direct and getting cheap flights works out around £1000 for us both for 13 days. A week with Jet 2 in self catering at Caye Beach Papagayo is £1800!

I was coming to say this - we visited last summer and it was amazing. Really beautiful with a lovely vibe. We stayed at the hotel Cordial Mogan Playa and the food was great, pool options lovely, lovely gardens - really couldn’t fault it.

Many thanks. My friend has stayed there twice and I have seen how lovely the resort is on travel programmes. The hotel is not in my budget unfortunately, as we like to go away frequently for up to a month. Maybe one day we will treat ourselves!

Radisson Blu in Gran Mogan - we went with kids but they have an adults only section and the breakfast is amazing. Lots of nice restaurants only a 10 mins walk into the town all flat. La Gondola was fantastic Italian. Good boat trips and frequent buses to other towns if you want to explore.

mambojambodothetango · 02/04/2025 10:04

Lanzarote. Personally I don't like Playa Blanca as it's too busy. As PP said, Puerto Calero is nicer, though no beach. Avoid Puerto del Carmen and Costa Teguise. We tend to stay in the smaller villages and hire a car to explore the island. There's so much to see (art/architecture/walking/history/natural wonders/pretty villages/amazing beaches with lagoons etc) it seems a shame to stay in a resort all week.

We booked through easy jet (which was £1000 cheaper than Tui for the same package! - for 5 people). It was one of the cheaper options. There are self catering options with access to the pool complex too.

I am from Gran Canaria and can recommend these areas:

  • Playa Las Canteras, you can easily pop into town to do some tourism and there are supermarkets nearby. The promenade bit is lovely.
  • Puerto de Mogán is lovely, not overly crowded like Maspalomas or Playa del Inglés.
Lanzarote is very nice as well, we stayed in an aparthotel called Gloria Izaro club hotel in Puerto del Carmen. We had breakfast included but also a kitchenette.
