two parents, three teens
money not an issue
five days
love good food, nice interiors, access to lovely countryside and/or interesting town with countryside nearby
not London as we live there
bonus if we can take the dog but not essential
want somewhere that feels really special

The crown @ Ampney Crucis in the Cotswolds

St Ives in Cornwall I think, as long as I could get myself there and back by magic carpet rather than the current journey on the horrific A303/A30.

Coming on to say The Torridon but not the first.

AnneShirleysNewDress · 06/03/2025 14:24

Burgh Island for me too. I love all things Agatha related.

CharlotteCChapel · 06/03/2025 14:27

Burgh island

anniegun · 06/03/2025 14:28

Gleneagles, fab service facilities and rooms.Lots to do for all the family

Couloir · 06/03/2025 14:29

Gidleigh Park, every time.

Someone once said it's the place you would go if you won the lottery while you figured out what to do.

Dumbleton Hall near Evesham.

Can I add Hotel Tresanton in St Mawes? Classy, chic, good food and lovely views. Great service last time I went. They have 2 and 3 bedroom family suites but I think I'd book separate rooms so everyone has their own bathroom (you said budget wasn't an issue!)

They also have a private boat and you can book a fishing trip on it - my son caught some fish which the chef then served us at dinner - or you can ask them to make you a picnic and drop you at a private beach. You can go crab fishing on the quay at St Mawes or get a boat to Falmouth, which has some good restaurants and beaches. ETA they allow dogs as well!

Don't go to The Idle Rocks, it was dreadful last time we went (only for lunch but it was a disaster).

Thank you so much for these suggestions. Sorry to be slow coming back to the thread. I kept checking in then getting distracted looking up each place and forgetting to post.

I love that so many of you said Burgh Island. We got married there nearly a quarter of a century ago. It was the best weekend ever. I love that place dearly but it’s too smart for the kids holiday right now and we can’t take the dog. Plus I love it for just DH and I for the occasional anniversary.

We did Watergate bay when the kids were smaller and loved it at that age but not sure now.

I love the look of so many places suggested. Am tempted by the Newt, the Fish, Gidleigh Park. I’d love Scotland but I don’t feel drawn by the photos of Gleneagles. It looks a bit corporate. Is it really lovely? Any other great rural Scottish ideas?

My immediate thought was Claridges, but you say not London.
I would like to try Cromlix in Scotland.

Frostynoman · 06/03/2025 20:15

The Balmoral, Edinburgh

For me it would be the Portmeirion Hotel in Wales https://portmeirion.wales/stay/accommodation/portmeirion-hotel

Glenapp castle in Scotland was amazing, we did the private trip out to the little island with thr lighthouse but they do a whole sea safari with glammping on Jura

ringmybe11 · 06/03/2025 20:32

To answer your question about gleneagles yes it's really lovely. Great service, best breakfast buffet I've ever seen and I've been to plenty of 5* hotels before. Loads of activities to do on site but countryside etc within easy reach too. Spa great, golf great...

TrufflePopcorn · 06/03/2025 20:34

Gleneagles of course as many have said, and the 4 Seasons Hampshire.

Loudhousefun · 06/03/2025 20:38

The Fairmont in St Andrews is beyond stunning, by the beach, golf course views- amazing spa and even better afternoon tea. Really want to go back 😔

peanutbuttertoasty · 06/03/2025 20:39

If you want scotland, Fife arms. Fly to Aberdeen then about 1 hr 20 drive from airport. There’s no pool though but gorgeous walks

TrufflePopcorn · 06/03/2025 20:39

And if you really want to splash out, Skibo Castle. Rural, Scottish.

peanutbuttertoasty · 06/03/2025 20:40

Would avoid the fish, I thought it was distinctly shit

heckfield place?

MayaPinion · 06/03/2025 20:43

The Culloden, just outside Belfast. 10 minute taxi or car from Belfast City Airport, near the city and beaches. Absolutely stunning.

wherethewaterisdarker · 08/03/2025 09:29

I’ve been to a few of these and imo the newt is a rung above. A really special hotel (and much more than a hotel). Only bad thing is it doesn’t take dogs
