Evening all,

Sick of seeing this grey sky..

Does anyone have any holidays planned yet?

Were off to Turkey for 2 weeks in August, I can not wait to feel some heat and spend some time together.

Out of curiosity and being bored how much does your holiday really cost you if you were to break every bit down.. clothes, spends, parking etc

Do people like complete new wardrobes for the family/couple for whole your there. I really enjoy having all new to wear.

Have a nice evening all

Are you all retired? And Uber wealthy?
I dream of even doing one proper holiday, but between only having 5 weeks off, school fees and mortgage, it seems a distant fantasy. 😭

I'm not retired or uber wealthy, but I don't have school fees to pay (child free) and tend to take leave around bank holidays to maximise travel. My trips range from weekends away (no annual leave needed) to 3 weeks off over Xmas/NY.

I like to go away at least once a month - I live to travel. ☺️

Ted27 · 07/02/2025 22:01

Isle of Wight week at Easter - £650 for flat, around £300 for travel and food.

Bergen in May, not booked yet but looking about £1000 for a 4 night break, including flight, around £3-400 for food and activities.
Both of these with my son
July - Bridlington - 3 bed caravan £750, food and spends about £400. Me, my adult son and probably a child
Will probably also have a few days in Cornwalls visiting friends- cost the train fare, a bottle of Pimms and wine and I'll take care of a lunch or dinner out or get some food shopping

I buy what clothes I need, this year I'll need a pair of walking sandals and probably a few t shirts or short sleeve tops. I restocked on linen trousers and skirts last year so don't need anything.

Offleyhoo · 07/02/2025 22:07

Wow these all sound great. I'm impressed that anyone plans more than the very next trip though my adult son does this too. Enjoy!

MinnieMountain · 08/02/2025 07:21

No school fees and helpful in-laws who take our 11yo during the rest of the school holidays @FindusMakesPancakes .

Hemlocked · 08/02/2025 07:39

I am not a high earner and I only ever fly to see family once every 3-4 years because I can't ethically square the carbon footprint of taking off in a plane to have a holiday in the sunshine just for the lols. I find it difficult to see and be part of the often destructive nature of tourism and the exploitation of our living planet as a global playground. I wish I didn't have a conscience because all your foreign trips sound awesome frankly.

Skiing/Canaries/Thailand in the next 18 months

stanleypops66 · 08/02/2025 10:17

Off to canaries tomorrow.
Marrakech at Easter
Turkey in July
London in August
Portugal in October
Maybe NYC in December if I can see a good deal.

We're not rich, but we've only one dc, no school fees and no mortgage (as we moved north from SE). I work term time only so always have things planned.

SnowfallSnowball · 08/02/2025 10:26

I went to Vietnam last month solo, which was very liberating plus it was my birthday whilst I was there!

Zanzibar in July to celebrate my DD finishing her A-levels and hopefully Thailand in December or January.

Femalefootyfan · 08/02/2025 10:36

Vietnam, Cambodia and Bali for almost a month next month, can’t wait!
Possibly Gran Canaria later in the year and we’ll probably have a couple of UK breaks too.

The Asia trip is pretty costly and we’ve still got things to buy like visas etc. We don’t know how much we’ll spend while we’re there on food etc but looking at various websites, they’re cheap countries to eat in, I think we’re going to be looking at around £1-1.5k on top of the holiday cost.

We’re retired and comfortable financially but not uber wealthy.

Appleblum · 08/02/2025 10:43

We have plans for bali, china, malaysia, and south Korea. Kids are asking to go back to Japan again in December but we've already been there for the past 3 years so we'll see. I think I'll end up caving.

Mortgage and school fees will take a huge chunk of your money though.

mitogoshigg · 08/02/2025 11:02

Booked: algarve
Planned: a few bike rallies, trip to see my dd overseas, a winter warm holiday either before or after Christmas

mitogoshigg · 08/02/2025 11:03

I will add we don't normally book until a month or less before we go, algarve was different as it's an event and we are travelling overland (ferries get booked up or rather the cabins do)

mitogoshigg · 08/02/2025 11:04

@FindusMakesPancakes

I'm working but dc left home plus they didn't go to private school. We all make different choices, I had my dc younger

I wish I could afford a holiday. How do people afford multiple a year? Living payday to payday

mugglewump · 08/02/2025 11:14

We try to find interesting places that don't cost the earth. Albania has been a favourite for this reason, but it is becoming quite a tourist hotspot with loads of development and rising prices as its popularity increases. This summer we are planning to go to Georgia instead - a few days in the capital Tbilisi and then a week at the coast. It will be beautiful, different and cheap as chips.

We also take advantage of any airmiles offers to get away long haul. Next month we have a week in Greneda, flying coach with Virgin but the flights are costing us nothing (just paying the tax) as we are using the card points. We have booked into a small, slightly run-down locals' hotel, which is a fraction of the cost of the big resort hotels. So far it is costing us less than £1k per head, but are yet to factor in food and drink.

MissAmbrosia · 08/02/2025 11:31

I've been to Warsaw for the weekend to visit our office/stay with a friend. The lights were lovely in the snow. And last weekend DH and I went to Malaga which was great fun and had nice sunshine. So far we are booked to go to Tropea and Pizzo Calabria in May with a night in Naples. Might stop off at Amalfi coast for a couple of nights. Normally I would have something lined up for September by now but dd is applying to Masters degrees in various countries and we might need to transport her somewhere - in which case I will plan a longer trip around that. Will also do some more weekend trips - lots of fun deciding when and where.

Saveusernsme · 08/02/2025 11:41

Dubai next week (not my choice, family event I have to attend).

Morine for a week in July and Corfu for two weeks in August.

Low key this year although we always do self catering and have found the most wonderful place in Corfu which is a steal so book that every year. With carry on luggage only, for the four of us it’s a bargain. And I never cook but we buy food for breakfast from the local bakery, and eat out which is relatively cheap.

Planning for next year’s big trip which will be Canada for three weeks.

familyissues12345 · 08/02/2025 16:27

We've got a few uk weekend aways booked - Dorset, East Sussex and The Cotswolds

  • cruise planned for the summer . Thinking Northern Europe one, so Copenhagen, Stockholm, tallin etc

Will do something late summer too, but unsure what yet

travelmadmum23 · 08/02/2025 16:33

Australia/Bali/Singapore

August - not sure yet

Christmas - potentially lake district or cairngorms

CarpetKnees · 08/02/2025 16:55

Beautiful Wales for a week in June.
A City break for probably about 5 days around September.

Do people like complete new wardrobes for the family/couple for whole your there. I really enjoy having all new to wear.

Er, no. It would not occur to me to buy new clothes just for holiday.
I mean, I would check the beach wear still fits if going on a beach holiday, and might need to replace a cozzie , but other than that, no.

Lucky to have bought a property in 2003 before prices went through the roof. Unexpected inheritance meant mortgage got paid off and some left to go to things like pension and uni costs for young adult chidren. DH also got a big promotion a couple of years ago. We basically put what WAS the mortgage payments towards holidays. We know we're very very lucky to be able to do that. Had a number of years when we seriously struggled counting every penny when kids were little so don't take this for granted at all. I appreciate every second of every holiday.

Same here. I've got holiday clothes that are 10 years old. Were cheap to start with! For many years I literally didn't buy one new thing, just wore the same stuff each holiday. Without doing things like that we couldn't have afforded the holiday!

Ted27 · 08/02/2025 17:27

@User0311

People have more income and/or less outgoings
I manage to go away 3/4 times a year but it's mainly in the UK self catering
We don't spend much on holiday, I have a couple of discount cards so get into some attractions free or reduced cost.
I try and only buy one meal out a day, could be breakfast, lunch or dinner. We take picnics. We have one expensive dinner our, the rest of the time it's pub/cafe food or a takeaway.
We don't drink much.
I have no mortgage, childcare costs and don't drive, decent but fairly average income. My son is working so he chips in if he's with me. I prioritise my holidays.

MissFritton65 · 08/02/2025 17:31

We've already had 2 weeks in Cape Town last month, we are going to Victoria Falls for 2 weeks at the beginning of May. Then 5 days in Italy with friends in July and a fortnight in Greece at the end of August. We both have big birthdays this year and a major wedding anniversary so we are celebrating in style!
