Where to go in summer that's not raging hot?

Looking for suggestions on where to go for a family summer holiday that isn't too hot. My DH can't stand the heat so he's grumpy and spend his time indoors by the air-conditioning which is no fun for me and our teen DD. Ideal temperature is around mid-high 20s rather than up in the 30s. Budget of about £4k-ish. All suggestions welcomed. Thank you very much for your thoughts.

Iceland? Not being facetious, although budget may be low. Ireland, Scotland, North of France?

LarkspurLane · 03/02/2025 14:24

Poland
The alps
Madeira

Shanananah · 03/02/2025 14:26

How about a mountain resort? Somewhere in the Alps; France, Austria? Morzine is often suggested in MN as a reasonably priced resort.

Gloriainextremis · 03/02/2025 14:28

Yorkshire.😂

letshavetea · 03/02/2025 14:30

Madeira, I went in July. It’s a lovely island. Lots to see and do including some great walking. Temp was around 26/27 degrees.

🇧🇪 🇧🇪 🇧🇪 🇧🇪 🇧🇪
Belgian coast, mile after mile of golden sands, medieval towns to explore, nature reserves, art galleries and museums galore, fabulous food, hundreds of beers, fresh cream chocolates.....

Belgium and the Netherlands are perfect for us, and bits of France that are not too far south. We like it around 25-27deg which for us is warm enough to swim outdoors but not too hot to bike ride or sightsee.

Boope · 03/02/2025 14:36

The Algarve? It's on the Atlantic coast and windy so not usually as hot as the Med.
Fuertaventura? Another windy spot. I've shivered on a beach there in July.

I remember a lovely summer holiday in Sweden from when I was a teen, it is a gorgeous place to visit, and most people spoke great English and were really friendly. We visited the area to the south of Lake Vänern and also Gothenburg. The climate is lovely in the summer, and the days are really long.

Hecatoncheires · 03/02/2025 14:37

Thanks, everyone, I appreciate your quick responses. If my homeland of Scotland only could guarantee some nice weather for a fortnight I'd never have to leave!

I was going to suggest the alps as well, lots of the ski resorts are open in the summer for hiking, mountain biking etc.

mitogoshigg · 03/02/2025 14:40

Anywhere in Northern Europe is iffy with the weather but typically mid 20's in summer. How about Normandy? Great for history, gastronomy is excellent too

Crikeyalmighty · 03/02/2025 14:44

Lovely Copenhagen and then get scenic train ( 5hrs) or 40 minute flight to Stockholm- both lovely - Copenhagen coast has lovely white sand beaches with DJs and pizza shacks in summer and Stockholm has lovely islands you go to by boat - great food and when we lived there usually 21 to 26 in summer with a breeze

Creepybookworm · 03/02/2025 14:45

We have the same issues with heat. Places we have been that were fine are: Normandy, Brittany, Northern Spain, Northern Portugal, Germany, Austria, Prague, Belgium, Budapest, Northern Ireland.

EarlofShrewsbury · 03/02/2025 14:45

I went on a Norwegian fjord cruise.

27 degrees each day, I think we might have been lucky though.

JadedVeryJaded · 03/02/2025 14:46

Norway
Sweden
Iceland
Faroe Islands
Ireland
Wales

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 03/02/2025 14:57

Wales. Always rains.

Adamante · 03/02/2025 15:09

Probably a bit late to plan now, but for next year, why not go away in February half term or Easter? My dd is extremely intolerant to heat and going away in it is just miserable. So now we do our main holiday over Easter but our preferred is actually February.

ValentineValentineV · 03/02/2025 15:10

Norway.

MikeRafone · 03/02/2025 15:16

What type of things do you like doing on holiday?

we used to have family cycling holidays in the Netherlands, particularly Zealand, Dan Haug ( a great holiday park for children with swimming, just outside DH) Brussels on the way home and more swimming adventures. You can sail from Newcastle to Rotterdam

Copenhagen had a lot to do and for children, there is a big open air park open in the summer months.

north Devon has lots to offer, coast and moor land

TeamGeriatric · 03/02/2025 15:18

Porto area or Northern Spain, we've done both in late July/August. Porto hit 28c or higher only 4 times in August 2024, the hottest day it was 30c. The sea is on chilly side though and the waves can be a bit rough. In Northern Spain we did Bilbao and San Sebastian, it was about 27/28, but averaging slightly hotter than Porto I would say. San Sebastian is gorgeous, really enjoyed visiting, but accomodation is pricey, you could probably find somewhere along the coast a bit cheaper. Sea is much calmer and a bit warmer.

Chocolatey1234 · 03/02/2025 15:50

The Algarve would be too warm I would say.

If poss I would switch your main holiday to late Easter (Cyprus, Malta, Dubrovnik, Rome, Spain) end of May or October half term (lots of options) this will give you more options for your grumpy DH.

Hecatoncheires · 03/02/2025 17:02

We like watersports, beaches and countryside. Copenhagen/Denmark sounds interesting. Also the Algarve. My husband loves surfing so the Atlantic coast would appeal.

@Adamante I thought about going abroad this February but my passport had expired and I didn't get my act in gear to sort it in time.

Ah, I've just seen that the Algarve might be too hot. DH is a right buggar as he wants to be on the go all the time but DD and I are happy to lounge around a bit more. I've told him that next year we are going without him and he can stay home with the dog!
