Where to go in summer that's not raging hot?

Looking for suggestions on where to go for a family summer holiday that isn't too hot. My DH can't stand the heat so he's grumpy and spend his time indoors by the air-conditioning which is no fun for me and our teen DD. Ideal temperature is around mid-high 20s rather than up in the 30s. Budget of about £4k-ish. All suggestions welcomed. Thank you very much for your thoughts.

Madeira!! It's so lovely, and you don't need AC in the evenings, just an open window!

@whispering1 That's a really helpful website, thank you.

Stockholm. Lots of lake swimming and long summer evenings.

Just laughed at Poland as I went in June one year and they had their hottest day ever. The roads melted. We couldn't move.

San Sebastian was nice in August

Love Madeira.
How about the Azores?

Crikeyalmighty · 03/02/2025 17:12

@Hecatoncheires a great thing about Copenhagen is they have patrolled lidos by the sea and you can jump into the sea too which is clear Asa bell ( and blue) - there is also loads of canoe activity along the rivers. Plus you can easily go to Malmo southern Sweden on the train over the fantastic road bridge.- or drive.

If you like a mix of beach plus city with loads of 'water' stuff - it's ideal - it isn't cheap though !! Although not as bad as Iceland

Northern Spain is good for surfing. Cantabria and Asturias. Not too hot but can be rainy.

3WildOnes · 03/02/2025 17:16

Not the Algave- fat too hot!

The Alps, dolomites or Azores would be perfect.

Northern Europe could be great or could be wet and cold all week.

The Algarve? It's on the Atlantic coast and windy so not usually as hot as the Med.
Fuertaventura? Another windy spot. I've shivered on a beach there in July.

We've spent a few hols around Alvor and it never went over 28

Madeira looks interesting. We do love an island. Maybe I should embrace this as an opportunity instead of grumping at poor red-haired DH!!

Sibling lives in the Alps. They get high 20s and can go into the 30s in summer. The heat also gets trapped under smog in busy areas. The upside is it doesn't last long, they had heavy rains last summer, followed by snow in September.

Jersey

If your DH loves surfing, Lofoten is incredible. Beautiful beaches, incredible scenery, lots of wonderful places to explore. Not too hot as it's well within the Arctic Circle. We have beautiful summers here in Norway.

Barleypilaf · 03/02/2025 17:31

The French Atlantic coast. Ile de Re is beautiful and not too hot because of the sea breeze.

Excellent suggestions - my favourite place on the planet! But DH and DD want a change.

Pretty much anywhere in the UK?
But seriously Scotland, certainly Aberdeen and further north.

LadyPeterWimsey · 03/02/2025 18:02

The French Alps. Our best holidays have been there.

We've almost always had lots of sun, and only occasional storms or grey days. Last year it was high 20s to 30 degrees for two weeks near the French bit of Lake Geneva and we went swimming in the lake almost every day. Lake Annecy is gorgeous and the town is very pretty, not just the lake and the beaches. Higher up in the mountains (we were near Megeve for a couple of years) it might be bit cooler, and you get amazing walking and views by going up all the chair lifts, but there was also summer tobogganing and mountain biking and go carts. My boys loved trying the via ferrata and stretched their rock climbing skills, but we all loved the swimming and the chair lifts.

We're like your husband and have lovely trips to Madeira and the Azores in the summer.

Tell him to never visit Utah!!!

Phineyj · 03/02/2025 18:09

*have had

MissyGirlie · 03/02/2025 18:09

Northern Spain? You can get up into the hills for cooler weather, or spend your time on enormous beaches playing in the breakers.
The Azores? 20-25C in August. A bit rainy, but beautiful.

Ohhelpicantthinkofaname · 03/02/2025 21:15

We went to Corsica in late august and it was in the late 20s most of the time. So hot enough for the beach (Corsica has stunning beaches) but not so hot that you can’t walk anywhere.
