Sandy beach with ancient ruins nearby

Is there anywhere in Europe or Turkey that has a sandy beach and also ancient ruins nearby? Ideally a few sites close enough to not need a whole day trip.

We’re looking at 2026. Probably May half term as none of us (me, DH and DS who will be 12) like it really hot.

We’d prefer self-catering.

Paestum in Southern Italy, only one site though, can also travel to Pompeii though from there.

Side in Turkey. It is on a peninsula and you need to be on the south side for the best beach.

TimeForSpring · 02/02/2025 16:50

Cyprus, centred on Coral Bay for the beach?

samlovesdilys · 02/02/2025 16:51

Sicily? Southern Cyprus? Mykonos/Delos? Around kusasasi in turkey?

Patara, Turkey.

Broadstairs/Margate + Richborough. Plus a great many other ancient/historic locations from Roman to WW2.

Crete. Loads of ruins and loads of sandy beaches. Our favourite site was Ancient Lato. It was spectacular and, apart from.one other couple, we had the place to ourselves.

Rhodes

@RosesAndHellebores one of my favourite places! They just need a gin shack next door to the bacon butty van in the little carpark

Pootles34 · 02/02/2025 18:47

I live in Blackpool and am pretty decrepit these days.

Sorrento + Pompeii?

Sadly no sandy beaches but a great place to visit nonetheless.

helpfulperson · 02/02/2025 19:07

Crete would be a good base for this.

Dalyan in Turkey has everything you are looking for.

Fly into Dalaman and it's about 30-40 mins from there.

Beautiful beaches a short bus ride, or river boat ride away.

Cyprus, specifically Paphos. And even more specifically Kato Paphos which is the main tourist area around the harbour. There is a Unesco site right next to the harbour within walking distance of many hotels (and beaches) with Roman ruins, very well preserved mosaics, amphitheatre and agora. You can walk along a very pleasant coast path from there to the 'Tombs of the Kings' (or catch a bus when it's very hot). Similarly, just off several side streets in this area you'll find more archaeological sites with a variety of other interesting sights - another network of tombs beneath Fabrica Hill, another smaller amphitheatre at the end of a residential street, more mosaics in front of an orthodox church called Agia Kyriaki (St Kyriaki), Ottaman era bath houses. Slightly further afield, there is yet another site at Coral Bay called Maa Paleokastro where there was a Bronze age settlement. Now there's a small museum. Coral Bay has a wide sandy beach, just around the headland is another bay called Corallia beach which is also sandy and good for snorkeling with rock pools. Catch a bus up to the 'old' town (Ktima Paphos) and go to the Archaeological Museum there .... really interesting, and free when I last visited. More Ottaman ruins in the old town too. Honestly, for such a relatively small area it feels as though you stumble on something ancient and historic at almost every turn.

Of course that should be Ottoman....

Empuries, L'Escala, Northern Spain

Crete and Rhodes have lovely ancient sites to visit, however a lot of Rhodes' beaches are rocky/pebbly but definately worth compromising on the beaches for the ancient sites, food and people.

Broadstairs/Margate + Richborough. Plus a great many other ancient/historic locations from Roman to WW2.

You can see the twin towers of Reculver from Minnis Bay Grin. Not sure it's quite what the op's looking for though.

Pretty much any of the Greek Islands. Our favourites are Kefalonia and Ithika (Homer and the Odyssey).
