Sandy beach with ancient ruins nearby

Is there anywhere in Europe or Turkey that has a sandy beach and also ancient ruins nearby? Ideally a few sites close enough to not need a whole day trip.

We’re looking at 2026. Probably May half term as none of us (me, DH and DS who will be 12) like it really hot.

We’d prefer self-catering.

Sorrento + Pompeii?

Not great for beaches. They are tiny and crowded.

Kos has great beaches and loads of historical sites in and around Kos town, most of which are free.

We’ve been to Pompeii. Loved it.

I’ve now got lots of ideas for warm sandy beaches and ruins to hit DH with when he gets back from skiing 😁

Some inland in Malta and also Gozo, which is a day trip on the ferry.

Malta. Loads of amazing ancient sites and all of them near beaches because everything is near everything!

Peloponnese, Greece hasn't been mentioned yet. Fly to Kalamata or Athens and hire a car.

Visit all these sites! (Or probs just a few of them!). Nice beaches and inexpensive food and accomodation too.

There quite a lot in Halkidiki, Greece. We visited an archeological site called Olynthos and I believe there’s a temple and at least one Byzantine tower.

Paphos meets your needs. There are two major sites a few minutes drive, or bus trip. At the one a bit further out you can go into the buildings but they aren't lit so use your phone torch. I didn't and tore my rotator cuff trying to stop myself falling.

I did this last year - spent 3 days in Rhodes Old Town, a Unesco World Heritage Site, in a really wonderful guesthouse (the Attiki) then off to an AI beach resort for 10 days (Atrium Palace). Got the culture side done first, so didn't feel guilty about flopping around the pool afterwards!

It's worth sacrificing a pool for a couple of days to immerse yourself in the Old Town.
