AI and other people's kids

We (dd10, ds9, dh, me) usually do a villa with a pool for peace and quiet or a city break for food and culture.

We've never been AI but fancy trying it this year as the children are keen.

My worst nightmare is trying to eat a meal if there are families around with kids watching screens. Can I avoid this at a certain price point? Or is this just modern life in a family hotel?

erm…..what a bizarre post. How can anyone on here tell you whether you’ll be sitting next to a family that have kids on screens.

worst nightmare…..

lopyrs · 25/01/2025 16:02

Eh? How does that impact you? Cant say I've ever noticed kids on iPads at dinner in the hotels we've been to, but I doubt I'd really notice!

Winterdazy · 25/01/2025 16:03

And a nice added suggestion that only ‘poor people’ are so uncouth

Coffeeguru81 · 25/01/2025 16:04

How bizarre that this is worst nightmare and what you’re focussing on

yes there will be some
Most don’t when we were there at least
but really op - are you worried your children are going to be pestering you to cooy and you won’t be able to say no? If so.,, you have bigger issues that this

Boardingschoolmumoftwo · 25/01/2025 16:04

Go to a hotel not frequented by people from the UK. We have stayed at a wonderful place in menorca where most families were German or french. The only other British family there plugged their two year old into an iPad every night with FOUR adults at the table and ignored her for two hours, I was mortified 😂 but they were the only family using screens

Dror · 25/01/2025 16:04

Worst nightmare? 😄
It's easily avoided by simply not checking what's on other peoples tables.

Coffeeguru81 · 25/01/2025 16:04

We went to Sani…. It’s dominated by very rich Russians and they were ALL on their screens

another bizarre thing about your post is you thinking there would be a correlation

lopyrs · 25/01/2025 16:04

But to answer the question, I think it's c£849.67 pp that you siphon off the screen watching chavs, but be careful, go over £1457.24pp and the little tikes will be reading Shakespeare aloud.

GretchenWienersHair · 25/01/2025 16:05

This has to be a troll post. All of the Mumsnet “nightmares” rolled into one. Next you’ll be asking if there are children named Kai and Kayden there.

Dror · 25/01/2025 16:06

What if the poor people's kids [gulp] approach yours?

If your kids are given screens at the table then they won't be jealous of the other kids on screens nearby. Could this be a solution to your worst nightmare? 😢

onwards2025 · 25/01/2025 16:07

If this is your worst nightmare on holiday and you are correlating it to wealth you are very out of touch, I find it more in the higher end hotels and restaurants, but can't say it overly bothers me either way

TurnipsGalore · 25/01/2025 16:08

I'm definitely not worried about my children. Just about me! I find it very irritating.

You are right, the price point is likely not the issue at all, just wondering how to filter out people who I would find out stressful to holiday with.

The idea of a less British resort is a good one thanks.

The horror if there was a Chelsea!

You need somewhere like Mauritius. Loads of Dutch Germans south Africans etc. no chavvy brits

And you’re not focussed on enjoying the company of your partner and children and the food, instead… fiercely looking around and starting at families on screen

😆

Maybe you need to work on yourself a bit if you find kids quietly watching screens and not bothering you so objectionable. I’d rather a kid in a screen at the next table than a loud screaming kid. Id also prefer to see a kid on a screen than someone who’s looking down their nose at others just trying to enjoy their holiday. Maybe just stick to a villa.

Take it that you’re never been anywhere like this @Nellyelephanty ?

TurnipsGalore · 25/01/2025 16:13

Hilarious I seen too have hit a lot of nerves!

I'm not at all wealthy and have never been to a resort of any price point, hence not knowing what to expect @onwards2025. My only experience of all inclusive is a chain restaurant in the uk and I found it stressful!

I want to go to a resort specifically because my children enjoy meeting other children from all walks of life @Dror , even, gasp, posh ones.

Quietly obviously isn't an issue. I mean children without headphones playing Peppa Pig at full volume.

It would have to be an incredibly loud tablet to be audible to someone at another table in a AI restaurant. Those places are pretty noisy. Honestly if people not conforming to your rules upsets you just stick to a villa or maybe just let your DH take the kids away somewhere.

I don’t think you’ve hit nerves

you’ve made me chuckle at least

odd bod!

LeopardsANeutral · 25/01/2025 16:18

Try to sit at your own table with your family for meals and don't go and sit with other families. Hopefully this will help you mind your own business about what other people choose to do with their children whilst on their holiday.

Dror · 25/01/2025 16:19

'Hilarious I seen too have hit a lot of nerves!'

Not with me, I would only consider going to a childfree hotel, personally.
You could get those earplugs that dim the noise of surroundings, being in a crowded hotel dining room with a load of kids would be unenjoyable even without screens.

Yes he might well do that actually, it's probably a good solution.

I have hearing problems and digital sounds do seem to bother me more than most people, but a loud restaurant in general would be difficult and I was wondering if this is what to expect.

Thanks

No. Of course you can't avoid this. It's none of your business.
