UK holiday like been on a beach holiday! Is this possible?

My son's eczema gets really bad in the sun and last year we went to Spain but even out of season the flare up was just not worth it. It seems to react in the sun. We thought it was the pool at first but it is the mix of suncream, sweating and sun that has been the problem.
We have decided to stay on the UK but I would like something where we could possibly sit by a pool while the kids play. I don't want to do centreparcs as I refuse to pay 2.5k for a holiday in the UK for a week. Any other suggestions would be most welcome. We are in Yorkshire so.maybe within a 4 hour drive.

I’d say book a week around St Ives in May June half term- the weather is amazing then and the beaches are unlike anywhere else in the country.

Shakeyourbaublesandsmile · 23/01/2025 23:09

Hoeseasons have some logged as well as caravans for budget up to luxury

Some of the sites have direct beach access

LarkinAboot · 23/01/2025 23:10

Yes we did a resort in st Ives. Had pools and the beach but definitely not med weather
Will be pricey and more than 4 hours though

What about a European holiday park - Landal or Centerparcs Europe. Holland, Germany, Northern France, Belgium? So you get to be abroad but it's not too hot? Also affordable.

Hmm we were in Cornwall last May half term and it was mostly grey and quite often rainy.

North Wales has a great assortment of places to stay, The Conwy, Llandudno area are great bases, loads to see and do for all pockets

Bjorkdidit · 24/01/2025 09:30

Yeah, Cornwall in May (especially with the drive from Yorkshire) is likely to be more expensive than Center Parcs and a big risk of cold, wet and windy, meaning you'd spend a fortune on indoor activities.

I agree with the northern European Center Parcs suggested above. Also Lalandia in Denmark might be good. Probably not cheap, but there's a big water park dome with spa area for the adults, plus the original Legoland and the Lego House, which seems popular amongst Mumsnetters who've been.

You can fly to Billund with Ryanair, or there might be a ferry from somewhere like Hull.

Just got back from Landal funny enough and it was lovely but still not quite that vibe

@goodnightgrumble

Which one did you go to?
We haven't tried Centerparcs in Europe but they do look nice & definitely cheaper than UK. The Paris one looks nice.

Belgian sunparks is supposed to be similar.

Cornwall would have variable weather in May Half term & you might end up spending a fortune on indoor activities.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 25/01/2025 11:01

The sun uk or anywhere makes my skin flare. I look like a prat but fibula length uv leggings and long sleeve top helps as does anti histamine, daily. For me it's worse on the beach. I have a random theory the uv is more reflective from the sand.

Maybe look for a pool holiday and leave the beach out.

mitogoshigg · 25/01/2025 11:18

Try a U.K. holiday park, there's lots of options, not just centreparcs. My dc's liked Haven at primary school age as there was a go ape type thing on the site and they loved the mini disco and bingo, go figure! Classy it aint but my dc liked fun and cheesy Grin

mitogoshigg · 25/01/2025 11:19

Ps I have a sun sea and sand allergy issue and find antihistamines, limiting exposure and showering well after touching sand and salt water helps a lot.

Verite1 · 25/01/2025 11:21

Slightly off topic but have you tried different sun creams. It is generally that which triggers my eczema. La Roche Posay is the only one that doesn’t. It’s pricey but brilliant. You used to be able to get it on prescription but I think they have stopped now unfortunately.

PrincessOfPreschool · 25/01/2025 11:52

You can look at caravan holidays with pools. Some are quite nice. Loads in Norfolk and Wales but obviously the weather is not guaranteed.

St Ives is beautiful, but the weather is really varied and often that coast line gets quite bit of rain. Statistically I think the place that gets the most sunshine in the UK is the south side of the Isle of Wight. However I would probably look for somewhere with an indoor pool rather than relying on the British weather.

Twilightstarbright · 28/01/2025 20:34

@Verite1 slightly random but my son can only tolerate La Roche posay or Aldi kids sensitive factor 50 which is very cheap- potentially worth trying?

@goodnightgrumble there’s a place near Berlin that is a massive indoor water park?

Toospotty · 29/01/2025 08:07

Short flight to Jersey? Although the hotels with pools aren’t that inspiring (the Merton gets a lot of praise on here but I found it tired and the pool wouldn’t be fun to sit around for long stretches of time). But the beaches are incredible, far less busy than Cornwall, and the weather is on the whole slightly better than the UK, although no guarantees of course.

deplorabelle · 29/01/2025 08:12

You will not be able to do without sunscreen if the sun is shining in the UK, particularly if you are on a beach which is a very bright environment. It is highly likely to be a reaction to sunscreen that's causing most of the problem.

As someone who lives in Cornwall, I can categorically state that the weather is very often.not amazing over May/June half term (or at any other time)

budgiegirl · 29/01/2025 11:11

Choose an area then do a search on booking.com for ideas of where to stay - set the filter for a swimming pool - preferably an indoor one so you can use it no matter what the weather - especially if your DS will need suncream if using an outdoor pool

Many years ago when our kids were tiny, we stayed at China Fleet in Saltash on the south coast. We had a fairly basic two bedroom apartment, and there was so much for the kids to do - mini golf, soft play, a decent indoor pool with slide, play park etc. It was perfect for a break with the kids. But I don't know if that might be a bit too far for you, or what it's like now.

Obviously not Bodmin or St Austell lol, Penwith peninsula though is often spectacular late spring early summer. I have thousands of pictures on my phone to prove it.

Cornwall is amazing anytime of the year tbf.

whippleproceedure · 30/01/2025 12:28

So risky with the weather though a uk holiday in the rain is grim and expensive.
We are a sun averse family v v fair so burn easily
Our best trips were to the west of Ireland .
Fantastic beaches and a wet suit or the clothes with sun protection in them worked well. Westport is easy to get to from knock airport or the drive over isn't too bad.
fantasthotels with pools they do great family deals.
Lovely scenery lovely food
Westport house has great stuff for kids to do as well .
A random suggestion I guess!!!

I would bet it costs more to have a week at a UK Landal than the combined travel & rent cost of a European Landal. The one we went to was around £700/week in main school hols for a 3-bed on a nice resort.

Boope · 02/02/2025 15:33

Anywhere in the UK can be glorious or pouring down in any summer month.
Equally true of the Netherlands.
Maybe look at the best accommodation in a holiday park with an indoor pool. Hoseaons or Haven.
