Small crossbody bag for travel essentials

I've tried Style and Beauty earlier on, but received very few responses. I'm after a smallish - maybe 20cm by 20cm bag for holding things like phone, credit card, cash, passport, tissues etc, that I can wear close to my body.

There have been suggestions for Mia Tui in old threads and I like the look of the Emma and Lottie bags, but they don't seem to have many photos of what they are like inside.

Also had a look at Roka Bond and Chelsea, which are around the right size, but again, I'd like to know about what they are like in reality for travelling. Do they have many zipped pockets inside?

Osprey is another one on my radar, but this one might be a bit too small.

Any recommendations anyone? Please don't say the Uniqlo shoulder bag.

TIA

What about the Kipling cross bodies?

TeamGeriatric · 20/01/2025 17:44

I have a Suzie faulks bag, she sells on Etsy and has a website. My husband choose it actually. They are not cheap though, I think around £60 last time I looked, shop is currently closed (I assume post Christmas break) so can't check the prices. The bags all zip across the top, but the bigger ones have another single zip pocket on the inside. My smaller one has a zipped pocket on the outside, but you can wear the bag with the zip facing in towards you, so no-one can see it. My daughter has a fat face one, bit smaller but equally practical for travel.

I have one from JD Sports that works really well for travelling. I think it was a Nike one - has a couple of zipped pockets/pouches and hangs at the right length. I can get my phone, kindle, passport, a couple of bits of make up, tissues etc. in it. Also small enough to cram into my rucksack if EasyJet decide to try to count it as an additional bag!

A bit more 'utility' than high fashion but might be worth a look.

I have also been thinking about this but am interrested in something similar but with a slashproof strap....

TheChosenTwo · 20/01/2025 17:50

Haha I was going to recommend the Uniqlo bag 😂 I bought one last October because I wanted a small hands free bag to take passport, headphones and phone. I hate using bags day to day and never use one, I have a work bag but I didn’t want to have to carry anything. It was perfect for me!

xsquared · 20/01/2025 17:55

Thanks for the suggestions so far.

@Iwontlethtesungodownonme I do have several Kipling bags already, but I need to replace the one that would have been the right size for this sort of thing.

I didn't think of Nike or JD Sports, but I will have a look at some point.

I have Roka Bond.

It has a zip pocket at the front, an open pocket at the bag, chunky zip closing the main compartment along the top. The main compartment has a couple of mesh dividers fits my phone and long purse upright in it. I like it, it's heavy duty canvas and far sturdy than I expected

You might benefit by looking at bag reviews on YouTube to see the different sections for whichever bag you like

VonHally · 20/01/2025 17:55

Pacsafe website for anti theft crossbody bags. They might suit OP also. Not cheap but good quality.

I have a leather white stuff sebby sling bag. I used it for my last trip abroad and liked it. It was big enough for purse, phone, lip balm, tissues etc and still had space to fit my camera (a Sony mirrorless camera) as long as I didn’t have a huge lens on it.

Day to day it has now been mostly been replaced by one of the larger quilted Uniqlo crossbody bags though. The Uniqlo one has the big advantage of being big enough to fit my iPad and camera in. I think I’ll probably just take that and not bother with the sebby for my next trip abroad.

MiddleClassProblem · 20/01/2025 19:05

I have one of these. It looks bigger in the pictures but the width of it means it’s the perfect size to have everything where you can see it

Takoneko · 20/01/2025 19:07

I meant to say that there is a mini version of the sebby too if you’re looking for something smaller.

Katie Loxton does good x-body bags

loveawineloveacrisp · 20/01/2025 19:14

Budget?

I have one of these and find you can fit more inside than what you'd think. And they're perfect for concerts / festivals.
Also they have slightly bigger ones if you think they may be too small!

I have this bag in several different colours for travelling. The passport goes in the front picket, there are two inner sections, both with zip pockets and space for money and cards (I use one side for UK and the other for whichever currency I’ll be using on holiday) and it’s big enough to hold an iPhone as well. It’s not super-expensive, but it’s good quality and looks good. Small enough to fit under a jacket discreetly too.

Meaning no offence to anyone, but I find that boxy crossbody bags made from stiff material are not all that practical for travelling. I find softer fabric or leather, that sits flatter and closer to the body to be much better (for me). They can be easily be hidden under your jumper/coat for Ryanair/EasyJet too lol.

BeeMyBaby · 20/01/2025 20:04

I recently bought fat face's leather camera bag in their sale, small but still fits lots, nice thick strap, normally about £75 but some colours were down to £40, its got 2 main zip compartments and sits right at my waist so i feel very comfortable keeping it safe in crowds.

xsquared · 20/01/2025 21:17

Thank you @Takoneko . I see that White Stuff's Sebby bag is on sale which is good.

Katie Loxton also have a sale on @xyz111 , so I'll definitely have look at options. They are perhaps more stylish and formal looking for where I will be going.

@loveawineloveacrisp No more than £50.

@VonHally Any suggestions? I've also just discovered Troop London which does canvas bags. Is that the sort you mean or did you have one in mind? Kipling are usually soft as well.

@xsquared cheap copies of the Mulberry Antony are great. Sit flat and have the right amount of space and easy access They are easy enough to find on line . Camera bag style doesn’t work for me. I also have an Osprey flap cross body bag which also works well. Their sales are good.

hexsnidgett · 20/01/2025 21:46

Fjallraven are lovely, last for ever and unfussy looking.

Printedword · 21/01/2025 13:39

Maybe not the style you want but the Fern and Fern Mini from Whitestuff are really nice bags

ThatsNotMyTeen · 21/01/2025 13:43

I’ve got a Roka Willesden, absolutely great bag for travelling.

Allthatworkandwhatnow543 · 21/01/2025 13:51

Place-marking! Thanks for this thread op!

Love the Troop bags.

I have large norks so not sure that cross-body is my style. Maybe a bum bag is better for my figure? Don’t want to look too much like a tourist though!

Lots of great suggestions here.
