I first went to sydney 20 years ago. I was not keen as i dont like built up cities but iwas staying with relatives near manly so it was a cheap holiday. I went back to australia last year to perth and adelaide and whilst they are cities, they are smaller so i thought I would enjoy them. I did at first but then got very homesick for the uk lifestyle and when i was in adelaide all the shops close at 5pm and the place was dead. Im used to shops staying open u til 9pm daily and the towns being buzzing

You don’t visit Australia for the cities. They are average at best and don’t hold a candle to European cities. You need to get out of the cities and into the country. Go and see spectacular nature that you just don’t get in the UK. Great ocean road, Great Barrier Reef, Kakadu, Rottnest Island, any of the beautiful beaches near Adelaide and Perth.

I have been to kangaroo island and it was too remotely and i was bored

When I went to New South Wales 20 years ago I also went to Canberra to visit a relative who was living there at the time and I've never been so bored in my life Canberra is the worst place I've ever been to in Australia

Canberra is the capital of Australia and Washington DC is the capital of America but comparing the two I absolutely adored Washington DC I didn't like Canberra

You must lack imagination if you were bored. There is plenty to do in Canberra as a visitor - lots of museums and beautiful nature to explore.

Wow, a country with 330 million people is different to a country with 26 million people. Who would have thought?

PerkyOchrePeer · 20/01/2025 03:20

I was only there for 2 days and was at the mercy of My Relative to take me around I went to government house and that was all

You need to get out of the cities. There's endless adventures & beauty, but you need to get out in to nature.

Preferably a road trip, away from tourist tours and the 'big' attractions. There's nothing like standing on top of a mountain or gorge and being completely alone!

DPotter · 20/01/2025 03:28

Not really sure what you're saying here Perky.

Australia is big, massively big and you've seen probably less than 1% of the land surface. You found 4 cities boring - cities in one of the most amazing continents on the planet.

If you know you don't like countryside (Did I mention it's big ? well it's also ancient and full of the most amazing deserts, rivers, rock formations, coral reefs, etc etc) - why go back ?

Save your money and go else where - simple

Galectable · 20/01/2025 03:28

Unless you really want to travel that far, have a holiday somewhere closer. Fewer air miles, quicker recovery from jet lag. The UK is close to so many amazing places. Or if it's sun and heat you're after in mid winter, how about Namibia or South Africa?

I'd love to visit Namibia - the coastlines look amazing.

(sorry - very aware I'm using the word 'amazing' a lot)

OP I remember your posts while you were in Australia. Sorry you did not enjoy your time here. Your trip is now over and you will never need to come back. I suggest for future travel you think about what you are really looking for and do some research/background reading before setting off

But if you stay in a city where there are lots of art galleries and museums you can learn so much history

I hear what you’re saying. When the cities all close the people have either gone home or moved on to other areas which will be buzzing. But you need to know where those are and what the locals are up to. On the surface things can look bland.

Fraaances · 20/01/2025 04:14

So you didn’t see any mountains, bushland, desert, wildlife, etc… You didn’t notice that the landscapes are entirely different to the UK and Europe and the place is really rather large? I have observed that there are two types of tourists. Those that come with their eyes and minds open. They take like in and genuinely experience things. You seem to be only seeing what you can’t get from home. Perhaps you should stay in your house, dunking your digestives in your PG tips tea and living a very predictable life where you see only the beauty in the familiar.

andyourpointiswhat · 20/01/2025 04:34

I have no idea what the purpose of your post is, why you are just posting an opinion piece in the holiday section (especially one that makes you look pretty ignorant). You didn’t like Australia, um ok,

NattyTurtle59 · 20/01/2025 05:28

I really don't see the point of this post, but there is a simple solution. Just don't return to Australia, I'm pretty sure they will cope without you OP. You sound far more boring than any country.

superclouds · 20/01/2025 05:37

I'm not really sure what the point of this post is.

You went to Australia, sounds like you didn't really plan the holidays very well, and didn't enjoy it. Are you trying to warn other people not to go? Or to do their research before they go so they visit places they'll enjoy?

Tourmalines · 20/01/2025 05:42

Another one wondering what the point of your post is . Thousands come and love it . Different perspectives and interests. It’s really a pointless post .

Passwordsaremynemesis · 20/01/2025 05:54

What a strange thread. I’ve lived in Australia for over a decade and it’s an incredible country. But if you didn’t like that’s fine, go somewhere else on your holidays. Many others love it, but it’s not compulsory. I’m not that keen on Sydney or Canberra either, but it’s a huge beautiful and varied country, with deserts, tropical rainforests, snow fields and the world’s best beaches, and loads of history, indigenous and otherwise. But if that doesn’t float your boat, fair enough!

reichs79 · 20/01/2025 06:00

And your point is....?

DrJump · 20/01/2025 06:05

You sound hard to please. We went to small town in Australia this weekend. It was a 4 1/2 hour drive though some vast flat lands with a fiery red sun setting. We had beautify Italian meal late at night, a fab breakfast the next morning, good meal at a local club, stood on top of massive escarpment watching bird catch the wind waves, looked at some beautiful art.

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 20/01/2025 06:21

Is there a question?

PerkyOchrePeer · 20/01/2025 11:13

My friend goes to America every year and she stays in New York or Washington DC or Los Angeles where it's a buzzing vibrant city and she doesn't go outside of the city because she said there's enough to do she goes to about eight or nine different museums and art galleries and finds nice restaurants she doesn't go to place in Australia I went to the Adelaide Hills and when I showed how the photograph she said there's nothing there hills and trees and grass Countryside places because she said it's boring and if you go to a park you might as well just stain England and go to a park she prefers to see architecture rather than the countryside and if I go to any countryside place in Australia like the Adelaide Hills my friend saw the pictures of the countryside there and she said I would prefer to see a photograph of a building an art Deco building rather than a field or a mountain or a park because that could be anywhere and when I went to Kangaroo Island she said it looked so boring and she's and I went to a national park and saw loads of kangaroos which really did interest me as I love kangaroos and they all came out I was surrounded by kangaroos and my friend said to me you went all that way to stand in a park full of kangaroos you can do that by going to London Zoo why go all the way there just to see kangaroos she is more interested in architecture so that's why she stays in these big cities
