I first went to sydney 20 years ago. I was not keen as i dont like built up cities but iwas staying with relatives near manly so it was a cheap holiday. I went back to australia last year to perth and adelaide and whilst they are cities, they are smaller so i thought I would enjoy them. I did at first but then got very homesick for the uk lifestyle and when i was in adelaide all the shops close at 5pm and the place was dead. Im used to shops staying open u til 9pm daily and the towns being buzzing

She actually convinced me to only stay in a ciry and go to museums and art galeries and do hop on off bus tours. Adelaide does not do bus tours. She also visits places of worship to look round so thats her choice. She goes to talks about the history and told me how is going to a mountain worth it because its nor yling you anything.

When I was in Australia last year I saw an aborigine playing a didgeridoo I took a video and sent it to my friend and she wasn't interested she said where's the Architecture I don't want to see a man playing a didgeridoo and she also said to me could you take photographs of all the houses in the area and showing me so I know what the houses look like so I said but you can go on the internet and look up houses in Australia and see what they look like and she said I don't want to do that I want you to take photographs so it proves to me that you have actually been there needless to say we fill out and I'm no longer having anything more to do with her she's too odd

I love Australia. I love the landscape and the wildlife. I really loved Sydney and the sunshine coast. I haven't been able to visit due to young children but can't wait to return. I have friends who love Paris and the south of France which don't appeal to me at all (although I love the alps). Horses for courses, OP

She's odd? You both sound batshit crazy and this is one of the most pointless but also most entertaining posts I've read in a while! Don't like Australia? Don't go back ever again. Simple.

Happyinarcon · 20/01/2025 13:36

It’s ok for you and your friend to like different things. One isn’t better than the other.

beencaughttrollin · 20/01/2025 14:24

I really liked Melbourne, the Great Ocean Road (amazing!) and the Yarra Valley, and I loved Tasmania. In Tas, shops close very early (even the Target!) but bars and restaurants stay open. I missed Uluru/Ayers Rock, mostly because I went to Aus last minute, but I'd maybe go back for that and for the Gold Coast. Australia's a long, long (and expensive) trip from Europe or the Americas though, so that has to factor into any decision about whether to go. Of course it's totally OK not to go if there are other places you think you'd like better.

PerkyOchrePeer · 20/01/2025 14:37

Maybe Brisbane might really appeal to me but the thing is I love the accent I love the Australian accent and I love kangaroos in the wild and that doesn't even compare to seeing a kangaroo in a zoo

I actually know an Australian who wasn't born there but she went with her family to live there as a very young child I think she was three or four and she's now living in England because she told me that Australia is too boring and doesn't suit her lifestyle she's from a small town and she said there isn't anything there that suits what she wants to do so she came to England to live in London and she is so happy and she said she would never go back

A gentle request for punctuation pls Perky

If you are planning future trips to Aus - please get out into the countryside - it is absolutely spectacular.

I personally wasn't charmed by the Gold coast (to high rise for me) although I loved Brisbane and Cairns seemed very nice although I was only there for a few hours.

The Red Centre is a must as are the Kakadus and the crocs.

One thing that does seem common across all of Aus, are the early nights (except parts of Darwin and Sydney). Even central Perth closes early when compared to London. And let's be frank even australian's think Adelaide is boring although I enjoyed my stay there very much. I liked the vibe and the walkability of the city. And the surrounding wine growing regions are beautiful.

PerkyOchrePeer · 20/01/2025 16:22

The red centre is in the Northern Territory and I have never thought about going there. One of the highlights of my time in Sydney was watching and the filming of Home and Away and I met most of the cast members that I've been watching on TV that was brilliant

We obviously have different reasons for visiting Australia!

PerkyOchrePeer · 20/01/2025 20:01

When I was in Adelaide A lot of people said to me you must go to the Botanical Gardens. Things like that do not interest me but because people kept saying I should go I thought well I may as well go I've got nothing else to do. It was quite a hot day and quite a walk from where I was staying and I was exhausted by the time I got there. There was nowhere to sit down and have a drink no cafe and I was so hot and so tired I only spent 10 minutes there and I was so bored I just walked out I just did not like it. I do not like walking around looking at different plants and shrubs and that is why I do not like going to Kew Gardens in London I don't see the point

I don’t see the point of your posts, OP. You seem rather limited if you can’t find anything to enjoy when travelling to somewhere as diverse as Australia. It’s amazing.

Perhaps you don’t like travelling? (Or punctuation).

NattyTurtle59 · 20/01/2025 20:11

Who cares what your friend thinks, and don't you have a mind of your own? I will repeat myself - DON'T GO TO AUSTRALIA AGAIN. The country will no doubt be grateful.

If you were to read all my posts you will see that I put out a message saying that I watched filming of Home and Away while I was in Sydney so I do like some things and I thought that filming and meeting the whole cast of Home and Away was wonderful

This is a strange thread, what are you hoping for? That people agree with you that Australia is boring?

Its fine if Australia is not for you, there is no destination that ticks the box for every single person on earth so it’s fine to prefer to visit other countries over Australia.

Maybe clarify what you’re going for to get better engagement instead of spending time arguing if Australia is boring or not.

But if you stay in a city where there are lots of art galleries and museums you can learn so much history

Melbourne is a great place to visit

What on earth are you talking about, of course adelaide offers bus tours. There are city tours, wine tours, mountain tours and more. Why post rubbish.

What I meant was one of those bus tours where it tours around the city and you hop on and hop off

OP posts:
PerkyOchrePeer · 21/01/2025 19:36

I did one of those bus tours in Perth and I've also done them in different parts of the UK and you sit on the bus and it drives around the city and you put a headset on and it gives you a history of the town that's what I meant
