Pool but no sunbeds

Hypothetical question really for an anxious traveller. If you're on holiday and all the sun beds are all taken around the pool, do you still go in the pool and leave you stuff at the side , or do you give up and do something else ?

So you’re at a hotel
with a pool
and it’s hot and people are sunbathing and you are baffled why they’d choose a dumbed over the ground?

You need that holiday!

No I mean I don't see why anyone would care if there are sunbeds free or not! They don't seem like they should be a major consideration they're just a convenience, right?

You’re a lone traveller with no children… correct?

FlatWhiteExtraHot · 18/01/2025 16:19

We’ve been to AI hotels in the Canaries in high season and never had a problem getting a sunbed, so don’t worry OP.

When people moan on TripAdvisor about lack of sunbeds, they mean the ones they wanted, right on the edge of the pool in the full sun.

Why would I want my children to roast in the sun all day???

So there’s my answer 😆 . no children . Sun bed = sun umbrella = shade

don’t be daft!

I don't understand the point of sunbeds - can't you just lie on a towel on the ground? (I do not tan so have never tried either !)

Because sun beds are more comfy!

Do your children sit obediently under an umbrella then? Why do you pay money to sit under an umbrella steeped in chlorine and other people's pee?

Oh you’re the one who started the thread yesterday saying you feel like all of Europe hates you as a Brit when travelling 😆

Maybe it’s got nothing to do with you being British? Certainly not something I have experienced or indeed most on your own thread! 76%

All pools have other people's pee in them. That's why you swim, shower down, dry off and go and do something else!

I don't think it sounds like you get out and about much on holiday, to be fair.

Sounds like you may be shouldn’t be travelling, certainly not all on your own, if you feel “hated” everywhere you go in Europe 😧

I dont understand the point of sofas. Can't you just sit on the floor?

🤨

Oh I can’t wait for the logical response to this one from @Everythingisnumbersnow !

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 18/01/2025 16:36

Yep I'd wrap everything in my towel while in the pool then just sit on the towel on the floor until a sunbed came free, or grab a chair if there was one

bigoldnamechange · 18/01/2025 16:41

Enough sun-loungers would be a bit of a dealbreaker for me. I tend to find smaller boutique hotels are better for guest/sunbed ratio.

@Everythingisnumbersnow do you not understand the fundamental concept of relaxing?

And do you realise that not everyone on Mumsnet has toddlers or small children? Some of us have teens who are more than capable of chilling out on holiday. What a very bizarre response!

See pic for a prime example. Would you rather laze around on a bed, or on the ground?

bigoldnamechange · 18/01/2025 16:44

Not sure if pic attached, on phone so it didn't work for some reason

heyhopotato · 18/01/2025 17:10

When you say taken, do you mean have stuff on them or people actually using them? If it's the first just move it or ask a member of staff to if you don't want to do it yourself. When the person comes back and glares at you, wave cheerily at them.

I don't think they're a real person, too coincidental that they're hitting all these tabloid favourite topics successively.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 18/01/2025 15:58

I never use the pool but have found as I book self catering accommodation there are always sunbeds available. Hotels that offer all inclusive mean people will have no incentive to leave and I've found in the past they are the ones with sun bed wars.

Just leave your things to one side or on a bar chair.

Depends on location. We went to a lovely AI in Cape Verde and had no issues getting sun beds quite late into the day.

Ponderingwindow · 18/01/2025 17:16

we just plop our things wherever we can find a dry spot.

As for why do we want a sunbed?
i choose a sunbed in the shade so i can sit and read while i sip my watered down cocktails all day. I jump in the pool whenever I get warm or need to move around. It’s a wonderful reading environment.
