Anyone been? Any tips? How long will we want and how expensive is it? If we don't stay in a Lego hotel how is the transport?

Hoping to go in August with Lego-mad DS, 12. Just the two of us.

We’ve been twice now and it’s a brilliant holiday. We flew Stansted first time and Heathrow second trip. Both times we arrived late evening having had dinner at the airport. Resort area is a mile from airport so super easy just to grab a cab on arrival. I’d say you need 2 days in the theme park and at least a full day at the Lego House. You can walk easily between hotel, theme park and Lego House (both Legoland Hotel and Legoland Castle Hotel are across the road from the theme park and it’s about a 20min easy walk to Lego House). You can stay over at Lalandia waterpark in self catering if you also want to include the waterpark in your trip. We didn’t because we just wanted to do theme park and Lego House. Our kids were 6 & 8 then 8 & 10 for our trips. Great ages for it.

Hotels- tbh I wouldn’t stay off site as there’s literally nothing else (as far as I know, but it’s been a couple of years so may have changed/developed) and the theme hotels aren’t that expensive if you’re going out of peak season. Favourite was Castle hotel as it was quieter than Legoland Hotel but both hotels had excellent buffet breakfast and dinners. You get half board. When you book your hotel and tickets you also should reserve your breakfast and dinner times for each day esp if there on weekends as it can get busy. We went Oct half term both times. Super quiet midweek then busier sat/sun but tbh no more than 20 min queue for the most popular rides. In fact midweek we literally rode rides over and over again! Worth checking Danish and Swedish school holidays and avoid if you can. Prepare for pants weather. It poured down one of our theme park days but is packed full waterproofs! The highlight of the trip though is Lego House. It’s hard to describe but if you’re a Lego fan you’ll be blown away by it. 5 stories of Lego building fun! Make sure you book the restaurant for lunch well in advance as it books up quickly… Lego robots serve you and you build your order using Lego bricks. Anyway, hopefully that helps! I understand there’s now loads of other places to visit in the area… lake swimming and activities, biking etc and Viking/scandi history “living museums” so if you go in summer you could easily spend a week or more in the area. When we went it was quite literally Lego land theme park, Lego house and Lalandia!

This is fabulous advice, thank you! Lego house would be the main draw for DS tbh. How does LEGOLAND compare to LEGOLAND Windsor if you've been - is it similar? Bigger?

Burntsausages · 17/01/2025 21:29

I’m afraid I’ve not been to the Windsor park but I have friends who have done both and Billind far outdoes it apparently… cleaner, lovely service, lovely danish people… less crowded generally I think. If Lego House is main draw I’d allocate 2 days.

Safferari · 17/01/2025 21:40

Yes that's what I'm thinking, maybe one day in the park and two at Lego house.

DD is an older teen, so we've probably not been to Billund for a decade. Just across the road from Legoland (and a 5 minute drive from the airport) is Lalandia (which is a Centre Parcs -like place with nicer accommodation). The pool is lovely if you can get your head around the please shower half/naked before entering.

We've always taken the opportunity to explore Jutland and beyond.

Ribe, Aarhus and Odense are an easy drive away.

Madcats · 17/01/2025 21:48

Assuming that you are based in England, the Danish and North German kids tend to be back at school by late August/September week, so prices USED to plummet.

Bilund is much better than Windsor.

We went last year, stayed in an AirBnB house in the town, was only 10 mins walk to Legoland. Also 5-10mins walk to the “town”. It’s super teeny but there are some supermarkets and pubs/restaurants. A really nice bakery. We had breakfast at home and made sandwiches to take in with us each day.

The Legohouse in Bilind is great and definitely worth a day of your visit, there’s so much to do inside. The restaurant has Lego robots that serve your dinner which is lots of fun for kids. Even if you don’t go in there’s some things in the lobby and you can access the rooftop play areas.

Shower naked what?! This place keeps popping up on my fb feed, but I am not showering naked, half or otherwise. please clarify!

parietal · 17/01/2025 22:06

Go to LegoHouse for a full day. It is much better than Legoland which is just a tired theme park. LegoHouse lets you actually build stuff and play.

Piemam · 17/01/2025 22:10

Comparison-wise: Legoland Billund is cleaner and roomier than Windsor. It's brilliant. Lots of food available, not usual theme park rubbish. Check prices in regards to Danish school hols etc as stated by previous posters. Queues seemed lesser to me than Windsor's queues.

Lego House needs 1 day minimum. Could do 2. Theme park needs 2.

Safferari · 17/01/2025 22:11

@GetUpRightNowAndTomatoSalsa this is a scandi thing - we went to Finland a few years ago and it was the same. Basically they consider it unhygienic to shower in your swimmers - you have to shower fully before using the pool and shouldn't be wearing swimmers to do so. Same afterwards. It's female only if that helps.

We did one day each Lego house and Legoland which was enough for us - kids 10 and 12. We flew Ryanair and stayed at the Lodge Hotel which is just down the road from Legoland (10 min walk) and next to the sculpture park, which you walk through to get to town - about a 20 min walk. The Lodge is pretty good - and very family friendly. They have a small ish pool with lots of foam mats and noodles for the kids to play with, sauna, small soft play, table tennis etc. Play park outside. They only provide breakfast so we walked into town for dinner at one of the pubs which was great, and lunch was bought in Legoland/Lego house. We went in Aug last year and weather was fantastic the whole time.

mismomary · 17/01/2025 22:43

We went last year with 12yo DS. I'd say two days Legoland one day Lego house. Book the Lego house cafe before you go. We stayed at castle hotel, probably would do again, though might be tempted by Airbnb. So easy to get there, we might go for a couple of days again this year.

vladimirVsvolodymr · 17/01/2025 23:01

We went last august when kids were 11 and 9. Stayed at Legoland castle 2 days legohouse, 2 days resort, pretty cool for lego fans but lego overload for me 😂
We walked to legohouse and back, kids had a great time. Make sure to book the driving school early if the kids want to do it and you have to pay separately for it.
I loved that the buses are free for under 12 and as already mentioned it is close to the airport.

Puffykins · 17/01/2025 23:12

My DCs LOVED Lalandia - and DH and I genuinely enjoyed it too. The slides were really fun and they've been asking to go back ever since, but for that. We did two days in the park, a day at Lalandia and a day in the Lego House - it worked really well.

TickingAlongNicely · 17/01/2025 23:19

Wee went a few years ago, stayed at the legoland campsite (it has lodges as well as tent pitches).

Time in the park itself... depends on how interested in rides, plus driving school etc. If you are happy with a handful of rides, an hour or so in miniland, and skipping driving school, one day is fine. Every ride, proper look at mini land, driving school... Two days.

We really enjoyed the camp site.. it had a farm, parks, go carts etc. Plus the breakfast buffet was awesome.

But it was ore covid l, might have changed

Damn. I can't do that. Thanks for info.

Clearinguptheclutter · 17/01/2025 23:29

Billund is fab. Go late August once Danish kids are back, although it wasn’t quiet there weren’t any big queues. Many rides we just walked straight on.

we did one day Legoland
one day Lego house (better)
one day at the water park at Lalandia, then a late flight home that night.

stayed in a hotel in the town but it was a bit dead (the town, hotel was fine). Should have just stayed at Lalandia.

Clearinguptheclutter · 17/01/2025 23:31

Re the naked showers thing at lalandia there is a family changing facility upstairs which means you can dodge it by showering in a large family cubicle

Coolblur · 17/01/2025 23:40

We've been, I would definitely recommend it. Make sure you visit the Lego House as well as Legoland. Lalandia too. Don't worry about transport, you can walk between all the main attractions. There's a Facebook group called 'Billund for Brits' which is full of useful information and advice.

Legoland Billund opening hours are shorter than Windsor, plus you can't get into part of the site earlier like you can with Windsor. They do have some great rides which are different to Windsor.

You can access some parts of Lego House without paying. We did those bits on a separate day to the day we had entry tickets. If you want to do Mini Chef you need to book in advance. I would suggest getting a dinner reservation and getting lunch at Billund bakery as you can come and go from Lego House as you like.

And just in case the whim takes you, don't even contemplate sending a postcard. I think it cost around £5 for a stamp and we had to walk around 15 minutes beyond Billund to find the post box.

backawayfatty1 · 17/01/2025 23:56

We are going to lalandia in Apr for the 1st time but my siblings have been. They said 1 day legoland & 1 day lego house was enough so that's what we're doing. Going 5 days all in. Didn't know about the naked showering but I'll just be judged in my swimsuit!

Bjorkdidit · 18/01/2025 04:37

There's a nice spa area in Lalandia as well as the slides so good for adults while older DC go on the slides again.

Obviously the naked showering is a culture shock to Brits but just get on with it, honestly.

I figured that I wouldn't see these people again and it would be more noticeable if I didn't do it so I just did as the locals did.

Even when I couldn't get my locker to work and a Danish woman started helping me while we were both starkers .

I also had a Danish woman asking me to take her 8 ish DD on one of the slides, which was quite surreal. The mum was tired and wanted to change her baby and she was pointing at me and telling her DD (presumably) go with that woman there, which obviously I didn't understand but
I find the phrase 'sorry, I'm English' is very helpful there especially if you look like you could be Danish, which I do. Most people speak excellent English and understand that few foreigners will understand Danish.

I've only been in Lalandia to kill a few hours while working and waiting for flights but it seems like a great place for a family holiday and public transport is decent. I've also been to the west coast (Esbjerg) on the bus and Aarhus, which is Denmark's second city looks like it would be worth a trip and you can probably go there by bus from Billund too.
