Which one would you choose?

We love Scotland. We want to pack in as many trips as we can before I can’t go up the mountains anymore-am in my early sixties. We’ve decided to visit a particularly beautiful part-normally we just drive through on our way further north but my dh has hurt his hip so doesn’t want to do the long drive. We like nice places with plenty of space to stay.

I’ve seen 2 holiday houses-one is particularly spectacular-beautifully architect designed, lovely fittings and views. Huge tv which we like! 2nd is very nice, barn conversion, looks very comfortable and walking distance to a great bar. It’s very nice not wow. But it!s £500 cheaper-which would you choose? DH says we should just go for the one we prefer but I can’t stop thinking about what we can do with the extra £500!

Of course it will rain!! Never the wrong weather only the wrong clothes... Nobody goes to Scotland and doesn't take the appropriate outdoor stuff...
Glencoe is fantastic. Park up in a layby with a flask and beware of the deer who dare to stand at your car side... Fantastic photo opportunity....

Yes it will rain! Weird weather Scotland-had wind and hail in August and t shirt weather on Skye in March!

I prefer the 2nd one. Looks like a great spot and more cosy. Extra budget for dinners out seems like a win to me.
But if you love the 1st one and will get lots of pleasure just from being there go for that one.

SaltAndVinegarRiceCake · 16/01/2025 08:58

I actually prefer the second one, I'm assuming the cheaper one? So that would be an easy pick between the two for me.

I grew up near fort william - it's the wettest place in Britain apparentlySmile

crumpet · 16/01/2025 09:18

For 2 people - I prefer the second one. For a bigger group, the first one.

NotaRealHousewife · 16/01/2025 09:38

Oh I like the less expensive more

LostMyLanyard · 16/01/2025 10:46

I like the second one best. It is much more homely. I'd be so much more comfortable there. Plus...it's a short walk to the pub where I could spend that 'saved' £500 🤩

mitogoshigg · 16/01/2025 10:51

It's nice but horrendously expensive for what you get, i definitely would book cheaper, not even got a hot tub

Hot tub cabins are about 2.5k😲. You could stay a week in a nice hotel for that!

If you like Glencoe op you will love Mull. Go every year at least once!!
You mentioned further up North so hoping you have already been!

Funkyslippers · 16/01/2025 13:43

I'd go for the one with the best location

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 16/01/2025 14:29

It depends on how much the £500 is worth to you. I much prefer the first property, but it looks very isolated. How long would it take you to get to a pub if you wanted to go out?

We tend to go for nice accommodation as we normally eat out at lunchtime and relax at the accommodation in the evening - but if having a packed lunch out walking I may like the idea of an evening meal out.

What time of year are you planning to go as unless it's in the summer with light evenings you wouldn't be able to make the most of your lovely view.

Roselilly36 · 16/01/2025 14:37

Book the more expensive option that you like, it will make your holiday, having the nicer accommodation.

MrsJoanDanvers · 16/01/2025 22:47

@ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea it’s a 10 minute walk to the village which has a hotel and bar-but there are lots of places within a short drive. Like you, we often like to relax in the evening-and the time we’re going,it doesn’t get dark until around 9.30. The other advantage of a slightly more remote place is that on a clear night, the stars are great! So we booked the first one-we were forced into it because the other got booked! So looking at the hikes we can do-like I said, I’m not sure how long I can continue going up mountains so want to get a few more done before I don’t have the legs any more! But at least we’ll have a lovely environment to relax in when we’re tired from the day’s activities. Thank you all for your input-it all gave me food for thought.
