Which one would you choose?

We love Scotland. We want to pack in as many trips as we can before I can’t go up the mountains anymore-am in my early sixties. We’ve decided to visit a particularly beautiful part-normally we just drive through on our way further north but my dh has hurt his hip so doesn’t want to do the long drive. We like nice places with plenty of space to stay.

I’ve seen 2 holiday houses-one is particularly spectacular-beautifully architect designed, lovely fittings and views. Huge tv which we like! 2nd is very nice, barn conversion, looks very comfortable and walking distance to a great bar. It’s very nice not wow. But it!s £500 cheaper-which would you choose? DH says we should just go for the one we prefer but I can’t stop thinking about what we can do with the extra £500!

That depends - what else could you do with the £500?

LittleRedRidingHoody · 15/01/2025 17:27

Please, for me, go to the nicer one!

I always overthink travel accommodation, but am finally starting to learn some places are worth the added £££. Especially in Scotland 😍

Springflowersmakeforbetterhours · 15/01/2025 17:28

Cheapest. You won't be indoors much anyway in Scotland ime.

Chewbecca · 15/01/2025 17:30

Depends how much £500 is to you / your holiday budget.

Your post sounds like you too want to go to the more expensive one...

rookiemere · 15/01/2025 17:38

Walking distance to a bar is always good and £500 is almost another week away.
Just to add to the confusion, this company www.unique-cottages.co.uk/cottages/scotland?displaymode=list has beautifully decorated properties in Scotland.

Cynic17 · 15/01/2025 17:44

The one you prefer. Life is too short to cut corners, and if you go for the cheaper one you'll just spend the whole time wondering about the nice one.

And £500 isn't very much - you won't notice the difference.

poppetandmog · 15/01/2025 17:46

Which has the best location?

Raindropskeepfallinonmyhead · 15/01/2025 18:10

I have just spent best part of a week deciding on a similar dilemma op but it was only a £50 difference! Went for the more expensive one as we have stayed there before and know it ticks all our boxes

Yes the nice one is one of theirs! If I hadn’t seen it, would’ve been fine with the ok one. Lovely bathrooms-one each-and beautifully done. Lovely views of the mountains.

They are both in same vicinity so the hikes will be the same-but one is nearer a bar.

£500 will buy us a few meals out and I do love a bargain. But my dh is very much a ‘go for the one you want not the one that’ll do’ type of person, so interesting to read @Cynic17 and @LittleRedRidingHoody have the same view! But our best holidays have always involved being in lovely accommodation. And because it isn’t as far north as usual-just below Fort William-we don’t have to fork out for a night’s pit stop either side-am convincing myself to go for nice place!

I’ll try to post a link.

You clearly prefer the most expensive one, so why not just go for it? If the extra "wow" is worth paying £500 for and you can afford it, then why not?

GoosieLucie · 15/01/2025 18:41

What a gorgeous location!

Personally, I wouldn't book that one though because, for me, the sofas look uncomfortable (too low backed, so nothing to rest your head back on) and the dining chairs have no cushioning or padding, so again would be uncomfortable to sit on.

hilbil21 · 15/01/2025 18:45

What's the link for the other one? I would prefer to be in walking distance to a bar personally but that's not the same for everyone.

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/01/2025 18:48

Is there anything near the more exp one

are you likely to want to stagger to lock pub for drinks and meals

£500 is a big diff

if you were happy with the cheaper one till saw the £500+ one then I would go cheaper

This is other one-very nice-both can walk to different pubs! Both very close to great walks.

Thank you for your thoughts-definitely given us something to muse over.

Mynewnameis · 15/01/2025 19:05

I'd choose the expensive one (and never want to leave)

hilbil21 · 15/01/2025 19:06

I actually prefer the second one - much cosier!

CrispyK · 15/01/2025 19:08

I think it depends what you want to do.

Mostly stay in, read, cook, admire the view, enjoy the garden - pick the nicer one

Mostly go out & not spend much time in the accommodation other than evenings & sleeping - pick the cheaper one

rookiemere · 15/01/2025 19:09

I have to say I was very impressed with the quality of the furniture and fittings in the Quality cottage we stayed in - no Ikea crockery. The owner said they were required to buy quite a lot of things from John Lewis and it certainly showed.

However it was low season so it was relatively inexpensive and I wasn't able to get the full week off, so was working from there some of the time so it was really important to have a comfortable environment.

I think you would be happy with either of the cottages- sorry no help !

rookiemere · 15/01/2025 19:09

Sorry meant Unique Cottage.

Lyn348 · 15/01/2025 19:11

Ok based on the fact the £500 would just equal a few meals out I would definitely go for the more expensive one if you think you're going to enjoy it much more. However having looked at them I think I prefer the second one. Sorry not much use!

Dogisdigging · 15/01/2025 19:11

Second one, not as wow but love the trees more

Cheapest. You won't be indoors much anyway in Scotland ime.

Well that depends on whether it rains!

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/01/2025 20:04

This is nicer

think this is the cheaper one
