Where to go walking in August that's not too hot?

Looking for somewhere to go on a short walking break in August in Europe.
Main criteria are, need frequent flights getting the UK and not too hot (ideally no hotter than mid 20s)

I looked at the Austrian Alps but unfortunately the flights are only one a week.

Thanks!

German Alps? Fly into Munich, stay a night or 2 and then a train to somewhere like Tegernsee.

Or Switzerland: Zurch or Bern and again train to other places for good hiking.

Scotland.

LIZS · 12/01/2025 14:58

You can fly to Munich or Zurich for Austria

Most people go up the Alps

Stay in UK ? Lake district / Wales / Scotland .

Freiburg and Titsee would be my suggestion. For Frieburg fly to Basle.

What sort of walking are you looking for? Madeira has the Levadas and the climate isn't too hot.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 12/01/2025 15:03

Finland? The trails are well maintained and there are good quality maps online. Good rail network too.

Austrian Alps is definitely more than once a week from London. You can fly to Salzburg ( Heathrow, Gatwick, standsted fly different days and times), innsbruck, Klagenfurt (Ryanair) in Austria. Or Munich and cross boarder south. Or Ljubljana in Slovenia and drive north ( it’s about 45mins to Austria). You can also fly to Trieste in Northern Italy with Ryanair.

It will likely be hotter than 20 degrees though in summer, it’s usually 30+.

You need to head north to stay cooler. Denmark or Sweden

Longtermuser · 12/01/2025 15:07

Scotland would be the obvious one. Never too hot for walking.

midgetastic · 12/01/2025 15:40

The alps in august - that can be extraordinarily hot!

Scotland or Ireland anywhere northern would be a far better bet

Scottish islands

Galicia. There's a through hike called Camino dos faros along the north coast that is absolutely stunning, quiet and unspoilt. Weather is perfect in August.

We went walking in the Austrian Alps last summer and it was mostly over 30 degrees; even at altitude it was mid twenties.

Have a look at the Azores. São Miguel (the main island) has some wonderful scenery and walking trails. The temperature never gets much over 22°.

Northern Ireland, north coast - lovely scenery, great food, welcoming people and plenty of space. I love Scotland but it's gotten busier than I like after everyone discovered it during/after COVID - same with Northumberland.

Norway? Flights to Bergen, though not sure how frequent they are. Lots of trails in the hills/mountains around the city which you can either walk too or get the cable car/funicular and start from there.

QuimCarrey · 19/01/2025 10:46

Mournes?

VanCleefArpels · 19/01/2025 11:05

Have you looked at HF holidays- specialist walking breaks, really good vfm

reluctantbrit · 19/01/2025 11:24

Frankonia? Flight to Frankfurt and rent a car.

Alsace/German border

But if you are unlucky you do get a hot Summer there as well.
