Where to go walking in August that's not too hot?

Looking for somewhere to go on a short walking break in August in Europe.
Main criteria are, need frequent flights getting the UK and not too hot (ideally no hotter than mid 20s)

I looked at the Austrian Alps but unfortunately the flights are only one a week.

Thanks!

Ardennes in Belgium. or Eiffel region of Germany. Many flights to Brussels and then a train. Or the Rhein valley? Fly to Frankfurt.

We went walking in the Austrian Alps last summer and it was mostly over 30 degrees; even at altitude it was mid twenties.

Thanks - I assumed it would be cooler for some reason! Was it manageable?

Or Switzerland: Zurch or Bern and again train to other places for good hiking.

I was wondering about Switzerland. Ive read it can be middle 30s in Geneva but hoping higher up it'd be cooler...

Thanks. Do you know where to get info about the trails?

https://www.outdooractive.com/mobile/en/hiking-trails/bergen/hiking-in-bergen/177147807/ this website has some trails. Also the website for Ulriken, a mountain which has a cable car to the top, has some trails you can do either at the top of the mountain or up the mountain and around. We didn't do much walking as we were there with the kids. We went in August and it was between 16-20 degrees each day, a little colder up the mountains.

Hiking in Bergen

Bergen’s hiking trails start right from the edges of the city, climbing the surrounding mountains and leading ...

Norway definitely but you might have some rain. Scotland (watch out for the midges in parts of the Highlands), Iceland, Lake District.

@Drachuughtty - Titlis / Engelberg in August!
Ok we went up to see the glacier, but half way up are some stunning hiking trails.

I think with the Alps, altitude is your friend.

Austria and Switzerland can be very hot in August.

I’ve looked at La Palma (canaries) and concluded that it’s perfect for a walking holiday in summer- not too hot and some fab volcanic and jungly landscapes. Unfortunately my kids would hate a walking holiday although dh and I would love it

unfortunately almost anywhere in continental Europe runs the risk of suffering from a horrendous heatwave these days

Caspianberg · 19/01/2025 14:08

@Clearinguptheclutter - la palma? The canaries will be 30+ with high humidity in August. No cooler than the rest of Europe. It’s nice to hike, but end of May is better

I’ve never been but been advised (on here) that due to breezes etc the heat is more maneageble in the canaries than the continent. Happy to be wrong on that, but I never recall hearing about 40 degree plus heatwaves down there whereas I’ve been stuck in one in France and Spain

Caspianberg · 19/01/2025 15:30

@Clearinguptheclutter it was hot the one time we went.
People always recommend Austria on here. But Austria is lake swim temperatures in Summer, not hiking. I mean you can hike early or short hikes, but last year it was reaching 30+ degrees by 9am in our garden for pretty much the whole of July and August. By afternoon you’re looking at 35-38.

I've found both the Auvergne and the Spanish Pyrenees to have good hiking temperatures in August. Last August we visited Ainsa at the foot of the Pyrenees one day and it was 40 degrees, but up above 1500m the temperatures were perfect for walking most days. A group of us did a walk around Tella- about 1200m- in the heat of the day, and there was a bit of a flapping over hats, sunscreen and water consumption with the kids, and some thankfulness that half the walk was in a wood, but it was basically OK.

Galicia. There's a through hike called Camino dos faros along the north coast that is absolutely stunning, quiet and unspoilt. Weather is perfect in August.

I can't comment on the August temperatures, but I agree that Galicia is a glorious place to visit. I've been more than once and walked the Camino Inglés to Santiago de Compostela in May.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 19/01/2025 17:16

@Drachuughtty it was just about manageable with a lot of swimming to cool down, but I can't wait until the dc have left school and we go going holiday in September again!

abricotine · 19/01/2025 18:08

It's far more usual to have temps in the Alps around low 20s. Sure there's the odd heatwave now but you might get a week with plenty of rain. Switzerland is stunning. You can definitely fly very regularly to the airports that service alpine destinations, including Austria, as noted above. Switzerland is very well equipped for hiking - some resorts have a big summer season - and you can often take the train close to the resort from the airport.

Austria and Switzerland can be very hot in August.

They can also have sweater weather (and some rain) especially at altitude.

This. We went last year and had everything from rain to clouds to blazing sunshine. Temperatures went from 18-32.

Or cold, we had some snow in Wengen (which is gorgeous) in August.

CrushingOnRubies · 19/01/2025 18:58

Just googled average temperatures and at 26 degrees in August might be too hot. But the Troodos mountains in Cyprus.
