Would you/have you gone on a wellness retreat by yourself?

I am considering doing this for first time ever. 2 nights away, nourishing food, yoga etc there do a single rate. I have friends I could ask to come with me but I'm thinking I could really do with escaping from everyone for a couple of nights and just focus on myself!

Anyone done similar?

Three times alone. There were plenty of others there doing the same to look after themselves and socialise as and when wanted. I highly recommend it.

Scramblelina · 07/01/2025 00:18

I used to run retreats and tbh almost everyone came on their own so you’ll have no problems.

Oodiks · 07/01/2025 00:28

I would!

Any recommendations for retreats please?

Appalonia · 07/01/2025 01:09

Yes I've done a few. It's good to go on your own as you can really focus on yourself. I've done a residential silent meditation retreat, a detox in Thailand, spent a few weeks at a meditation centre in India and other things. Not done a spa day though, guess that would be more of a social thing?

Yes I've done this many times. I actually think a retreat is so much better when you go alone. You can really focus on yourself. On the occasions I've gone with a friend I feel obliged to be social which detracts from relaxing as much as when I am alone.

I love spa days but they're often ruined by people who see them as a social opportunity and loudly chat, show each xyz on phones etc.

I don't go on organized retreats, but a few times a year I go solo hiking/camping , to give myself recharging time.
I swim in the ocean, sit by the fire for hours, just poking with a stick
I eat well, and be good to myself.
I come back feeling like I have had a year off

Namechange546 · 07/01/2025 02:22

I went to a retreat very like you describe a few years ago. I loved every second and it was life changing for me.

Four weeks later I had found a new job as I realised the one I was in was toxic, I'd kick started the diagnosis process for my neuro diverse child and stopped allowing professionals to fob me off and I had got back to a reasonably good place with my DH. I was drowning beforehand and a couple of days away focusing on myself was a saviour.

I would love to go again!

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 07/01/2025 02:30

I did it for the first time this year. It was exactly what I needed.

Pippatpip · 07/01/2025 02:37

Do it. Tis brilliant.

TheDutchHouse · 07/01/2025 03:13

Can anyone recommend any, maybe one in the UK and one overseas?

48wheaties · 07/01/2025 03:49

I mean 20 years ago!

MiauMeow · 07/01/2025 04:16

I think it can be more nourishing on your own.

Sockmate123 · 07/01/2025 08:23

Thanks everyone you have convinced me!

A friend of mine went on this one and loved it. I have been on many retreats alone and found them a live saver. The vast majority of people there had come alone too.

Another friend used to go to India every Feb to a yoga retreat. She stayed a couple of weeks. I wish I’d asked the name of it now.

Yes, I did it in my mid-30s after I left a toxic job and before I started a new job. It wasn’t life changing but I did enjoy it.

I would do it again, but I already go away with friends and leave my children with my DH once or twice a year. I hadn’t thought of doing a retreat but maybe if I have a year where I’m not going away with friends I should do one.

LouisvilleSlugger · 07/01/2025 08:42

I had a couple of weeks spare between jobs and I went to a wellness retreat where you juice for a week and have several treatments each day.

Don’t know if I would do it again but I enjoyed it.

NorthRiding · 07/01/2025 09:26

I think it's better to go alone, especially if you want to focus on yourself and what you might want to change or challenge - you can be completely honest in a way it's hard to do around friends who know you as a particular kind of person.

I went on a retreat in Italy after a break-up and although it did absolutely nothing for me, it confirmed my suspicion that I wasn't the kind of performative drama queen who'd gain much from pretending to rebirth myself in a group setting, but that I did like figs.

BadSkiingMum · 07/01/2025 09:32

Watching with interest!

Disturbia81 · 07/01/2025 11:50

I'd have thought that would be much better alone, same as spas and cinema etc

CosyPinkZebra · 24/01/2025 17:04

Yes, I've been alone and with friends but either way I often see many people on their own!

I usually book though Wellness Holiday Boutique. Super friendly and loads of options of solo travellers!
