Seating for flight

We're going on a long haul flight and wondering what you'd recommend for seats. The seats are 2-4-2 and we are a family of 2a and 2c (age 4 and 2).

Would you go for the 4 in the middle to all sit together, or 2 sets of 2 behind each other so each child could have a window seat? I think I'm worried about squabbling if we sit in the middle but partner thinks it's better if we all sit together!

Thanks

I’d go for the 4 in the middle, but my dc are 12,and 9 and don’t really squabble. If younger, 2 and 2 could be better.

festivemouse · 04/01/2025 21:40

Oo I would say 2 and 2 if you think they'll want a window each - they might also be less able to annoy / distract each other if they're behind rather than next to each other?

Then you can each concentrate on one DC (and swap if needed!) and they can both be on the window rather than sat next to each other or on an aisle.

TickingAlongNicely · 04/01/2025 21:42

We liked the four so they could watch a film together (we had two pairs of headphones and a splitter).

Nextyearhopes · 04/01/2025 21:42

Definitely 2 and 2

Pigeonqueen · 04/01/2025 21:42

I think most kids enjoy a window seat so I’d always opt for that above all else.

youngestisapsycho · 04/01/2025 21:42

I’ve been you and done the 2 and 2… much easier then a row of 4

LittleMonks11 · 04/01/2025 21:43

2 and 2 - then if DC2 wants to sleep then DC4 won't keep them awake and vice versa. Windows are best at that age. You guys can swap over and talk if you are directly behind.

BarbaraHoward · 04/01/2025 21:44

I'd go for two twos, one behind the other. Everyone's in a window or aisle and you can all swap around as needed. Kids and adults love windows on planes.

SchoolDilemma17 · 04/01/2025 21:44

At that age I would do 2+2 but I also hate not having an aisle seat and not having access to the overhead bags (and asking another person to get up). We recently did long haul and booked 3+1 across the aisle which also worked well. Adults took turns and each had a few hours to relax too. Buy the seat hammocks, it was amazing for my 3 year old who slept so well.

I'd do 2 + 2. DS is 5 and likes being by a window but can also make a sort of nest in the corner and sleep.

If it’s long haul, likely one leg is a night flight and then it really doesn’t matter if you have a window seat or not.

Ohnonotmeagain · 04/01/2025 21:59

i’d go for 2 and 2 less for the windows but more because it’s easier to sleep leaning on the “wall”.

my kids both prefer windows for this, pillow out, headphones on, doze.

LittleMonks11 · 04/01/2025 22:13

Yes - window seat is for the sleeping, nesting and resting - not the view ✈️

Many airlines do to allow anything to be tied onto the try table supports.
Also the back of your seat belongs to the person behind you.

We always did 2x2 children got a window seat.

Simonjt · 04/01/2025 22:38

Two and two, it meals you can put the kids by the window rather than constantly telling them to keep their arms/legs out of the aisle, it also means you haven’t got two children sat next to each other irritating each other. Another bonus is when you swap kids you haven’t seen them for an hour or so, so it takes longer to become less patient with them, where as on a four your all together for the entire flight.

Onlyonekenobe · 04/01/2025 22:41

2 and 2, there’s just too much claustrophobia and faffing with the middle seats, especially in a daytime flight. The 2yo will probably need to get up and walk a bit at some point too.

BabyFever246 · 04/01/2025 22:44

Honestly I don't know. How are they with parental preferences? If both kids want to sit with one parent it may result in a meltdown!

November10000 · 04/01/2025 22:46

I am going to disagree with everyone else on here as we flew to Oman with DD1&2 at the same age and sat 4 in a row . Seeing their excitement and them holding hands and giggling together every time the hostesses brought them little treats and packs is such a happy memory for DH and I. We had pictures of the hotel/restaurants/pools and beaches and they were so happy chatting and then they fell asleep holding hands. It has to be said that they got on really well anyway but I think they treat of the holiday also put them in extra good humour.

partner thinks it's better if we all sit together

Yeah, course he does, seat back, ear buds in, mum’ll do the childcare.

That's what I thought.

My God the negativity on here towards men sometimes.
Maybe he thinks that because spending the time all together is lovely as you are are all excited about the holiday. Everyone can share in the conversation. It also means that if one parent dozes/goes to the loo the other can keep an eye on both DC. You can share the food that comes also and swop out bits the DC like between them.

PullTheBricksDown · 04/01/2025 23:09

For me the whole row is better as it's entirely your family space then. You can talk to one another and agree to swap seats, get things down, be in charge while the other goes to the loo etc. More chance of the ear buds in approach if he's in a different row and you can't see him.

SecondStarOnTheRight · 04/01/2025 23:23

With little ones I think row of 4 might be better in terms of having to get up during the flight for toilet or stretch of legs, I worry about disturbing other passengers and only go for window seat if booking all three seats or travelling short haul.

There are no threes. Just fours and twos.
