Is anyone able to please recommend some hotels or at least the best places to stay in Berlin? it's for three nights (coming in late first night from UK) and for an ault and teen. Needs to be close to the centre as we only have two days and DD is autistic (so finds travel a bit stressful). Walking is good where possible. Thank you for any (and all!) help.

We stayed at the crowne plaza a few years ago. The buffet breakfast was amazing, one of the best hotel breakfasts I've ever had. It also had a pool/spa which was very nice after a day of sight seeing. The hotel itself felt very quiet for being so central.

It's very central for West Berlin, near the zoo and just off the main shopping street Kurfurstendamm which has the KaDeWe. Teirgarten and Reichstag not far either if I remember rightly.

Motel One used to be good.

(It's a hotel not a "motel")

Hi purple, I‘m a Berliner, thank you very much for considering a hotel rather than an air bnb, because holiday rentals are wreaking havoc on housing availability for younger workers like my DC.
My tip would be to find somewhere in Mitte, close to Friedrichstrasse train station. That’s really central and will enable you to walk around the historic centre fairly easily, or get trains to other parts of town as needs be. It’s also a direct link to the airport train, every 30 mins. The area Tartan Mammy mentioned is far less historically interesting for tourists (albeit close to the zoo, if your DD might find that interesting).
The area north of Friedrichstrasse is most interesting, it’s called the Scheunenviertel, try a hotel on Oranienburgerstrasse called Generator. It’s next to an ex-squat called Tacheles which has now been done up.

We've (teen plus I) stayed at the Hollywood Media Hotel which is full of old Hollywood pics which is a bit surreal but is fab, fun and a great location (Kurfürstendamm which is a very central and smart shopping street). Great buffet breakfast. Also bus from airport right outside.

Hi stylish, I‘ve written several posts over the years about the best Christmas markets to visit in Berlin, should be easy enough to search for. The area I‘ve recommended is pretty convenient for the most central markets too.

Thanks so much for this. I had wondered about Mitte so that is good to know. Will definitely avoid AirBNB, I am really sorry to hear about the impact on housing for your DC.

They are still good. I stayed in Motel One in Dublin last week. OP I’d definitely recommend the Motel One chain, there’s ten of them in Berlin. I’ve stayed in Motel One Alexanderplatz, it’s very central and there’s a direct train from the airport.

I took DS to Berlin a couple of years ago for a super quick 2 night stay, we stayed at the Novotel in Mitte which had the best hotel breakfast spread I've ever seen! It was super easy to get to, we walked loads, but also very near the Underground, would definitely recommend.

beckycharlie · 28/12/2024 20:30

Me and my 2 sons (16&6) stayed at Novotel in Potsdamer 2 weeks ago and was really easy to get around and the hotel was really nice xx

beckycharlie · 28/12/2024 20:32

Also we found the welcome card for public transport really good value as the public transport there is really good

Thanks all for your help, hotel booked in Mitte! If anyone has any particular history recommended things to do please do let me know. DD doing 1918-1945 Germany for GCSE hence the trip.

Obv we are going to do the usual sites and likely a booked walking tour of them to get more info.

Oh, well done purple - which part of Mitte did you go for? So presumably you’re looking for history with a focus on the first half of the 20th century? A walking tour of the Scheunenviertel would be good for an impression of the pre-Nazi era. The national Holocaust memorial will be important, but it‘s tough and understandably pulls no punches so make sure your DS knows he can leave any time he needs to. The Topographie des Terrors is where the SS had its headquarters, so that‘s also anything but fun. Don‘t bother looking for the site of Hitler‘s bunker, there‘s deliberately nowt to see. If he‘s really interested in history there‘s the Haus der Wannsee Konferenz down in the south west, where the Final Solution was decided - probably not doable for a short trip though. I can also recommend the Jewish Museum for an idea of what Jewish culture was like in Berlin before the Nazi era. The Gaza situation has made things quite…tense, though. And the current tension is as much a part of our (ie Berlin’s) history as anything that went before it.

EmmaStone · 29/12/2024 22:03

The Reichstag and the DDR Museum are musts! Also did a walking tour (excellent - site of Nazi book burning, the bunker, Jewish Holocaust memorial etc).

I also insisted on getting into one of the Museums on Museum Island to see Nefertiti's bust.

We did the walking tour with original Berlin tours, such a brilliant insight, and perfect for my daughter who could relate it to her history GCSE.

Right next door to the Generator Hostel in Orianienburgerstrasse is the Meininger hotel. It's much better. Meningen hotel by Hauptbahnhof is also a good option.
I've stayed in all of these on school trips with students.

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 06/01/2025 20:56

We stayed at the NH Berlin Kurfurstendamm, that was nice and fairly well located.

Very willing to concede to your superior experience on this one - residents are notoriously poor on judging hotels because they never need them! The main thing for me would be that central location on Oranienburgerstrasse. The Meininger hotels have a perfectly decent rep in the budget segment, but as a chain they’re never going to have much personality.
