Squeezing an extra child in room?

DryRiser · 05/12/2024 18:45

I've booked (pre-paid, no cancellation) a fairly nice hotel in London in 2 weeks time to take my 7 yr old twins on a trip. Now my eldest (10) is coming too, I have no choice in this or cancel the whole trip.
I've asked hotel for a room upgrade but there's no availability at all.
So, I either lose the £400 i've paid or try and squeeze him in.

I was thinking to ask him to go to toilet as soon as we enter hotel, i'll check in, and then come and get him before we head to elevator.

Anyone this is a very bad idea or all good?

Can you ask the hotel to put a camp bed in the room? I used to do that for our third child, and it was nearly always possible

Don't do it - you've already alerted them that you want a different room so they'll be on the lookout for you. And if you do get past reception, breakfast will be a giveaway.
I'd speak to the manager, explain the situation & ask if they can put an extra bed in your room, or perhaps the existing room can sleep 4 if there's a sofa, or you can sort out the sharing.

FestiveFruitloop · 05/12/2024 19:56

Aren't there insurance/fire safety implications around this sort of thing?

mitogoshigg · 05/12/2024 20:01

Is it just you and the twins? How many does the room sleep? If it's 4 there isn't an issue. If it's 3 I would just check in with the twins then fetch the other child if they can be trusted to sit somewhere.

Is it room only or does it include breakfast?
How many nights?

If it's room only and 2 or less I would be inclined to sneak him in. Not sure what I'd do if not those circumstances.

Calliopespa · 05/12/2024 20:08

Problem is what happens if they spot him and just say no? You’re in London then . You can’t send him off alone elsewhere

You’d have to forget the breskfast. Just grab croissants from a bakery

SinicalMe · 05/12/2024 20:11

They have these things called cameras and CCTV in hotel lobbies and corridors to see who's entering and who's leaving.

It's not the 1980 anymore. Confused

TickingAlongNicely · 05/12/2024 20:20

Does the room sleep 2 adults 2 children, (so a double bed and 2 child beds) or just three people?

It's a double bed and a single bed. Yes I could get the twins in with me in the double, but it's still over capacity.

I've done it at the Radisson at Manchester airport before, but when the children were smaller, not recently, it's also easier there as the lobby is not on the ground floor so you don't have to have everyone walk through the lobby.

FlatShoesOnly · 05/12/2024 22:26

Are your twins identical? If so and you’re going to do any sneaking in of an extra person you’d seem to have a built-in advantage here!

50Balesofgrey · 05/12/2024 22:31

You could just ask, and pay for, a slightly bigger room. Don't do anything that involves being dishonest, that's a really bad example fir your children, they won't know that you are yo always be trusted if you cheat and sneak around

50Balesofgrey · 05/12/2024 22:34

Excuse my bad typing

Have you read the OP?

50Balesofgrey · 05/12/2024 22:36

Lose the money then, don't try to cheat

Bellsandwhistle · 05/12/2024 22:43

I’ve done this twice with my 3 kids once in a luxury hotel and once in a premier inn. Neither cared tbh. The premier inn was self check in so no issue and at breakfast I just said 4 pre paid breakfast and I’ll pay for one. Not an eyelash batted. In luxury hotel my husband and kids walked up to desk as I checked in despite being told to take their time parking and again no one cared. At breakfast I just said room 123 and again none said a word. On check out o asked where there no extra charges and asked was there not 1 breakfast and they said no nothing. I dint do it regularly just twice when plans changed last min.

They are fully booked as I understand it.

ButterCrackers · 05/12/2024 23:02

Why wasn’t your ten year old included in the booking? Perhaps this child can stay with family and you’ll do something else together another time.

DryRiser · 06/12/2024 09:55

Thanks all for your replies. It looks a pretty close run thing in terms of what's best to do. I don't like this at all but I think i'll have to chance it.
I'll check other hotels and make sure there's one or two I could get into at the last minute if there was a problem, and the hotel asked us to leave.
My 10 year old was staying with his mum but she's changed her plans at last minute and no one else to leave him with either... plus i'd like to have him with us.
I'll post next week with how I got on.

Thought i'd tell you all what happened. Spoiler alert, I got them all in the room no probs, and no hassle. When we arrived in the lobby we all needed the toilet anyway, so we all went, and the one DS stayed in the cubicle with the door locked. I then checked us in, got them in room, and then went back down to get the 'sneaker'. There was a mezzanine floor which bypassed reception so we used that to access the lifts.
I'm not pleased I ripped the hotel off but I didn't have an option other than not go and lose £400.
To top off the free-loading. I'd booked breakfast for two, but not paid. When I went down, there was some confusion but they eventually checked and told me all was paid for and all 4 of us had full breakfasts. Happy Christmas 😯

This is real? If so - How terrible to have stolen from this business. What a bad example you set to your kids.
