Penny pinching at Heathrow

We are due to go away soon from Heathrow T4. OH and I like a couple of drinks before the flight (at 9pm). However, I was shocked last time that a glass of wine is over £10 a glass. If we are discreet, could we get away with buying a bottle in Duty Free and drinking it before the flight (and disposing of the empty bottle before boarding). I know it's not allowed but has anyone done it before and got away with it? Quite frankly I'm getting sick of having to spend C 100 quid for something to eat and a couple of drinks each (family of 4) and am looking at ways of cheating the system 🤔

Cobalt machine is revolutionary for chemical engineering. M

they do indeed want to know what’s in the liquids

Onlyonekenobe · 02/11/2024 17:47

I don't think you get given your duty free purchases when you buy them, if they're alcohol or tobacco. They take your boarding pass number, put them in a sealed bag and you collect them after the gate on your way to the aircraft.

This if for long haul into and out of Europe, don't know if it's the same short haul/within Europe if that's what you're doing.

I really don't think it matters what anyone thinks. Do what you want to do, if it's legal.

samarrange · 02/11/2024 17:47

I think this is a brilliant idea. And why limit it to the airport? A standard glass of wine in a pub is about £6. But you can get a whole bottle for £4.99 at the Co-op and it does 4 glasses! So all you have to do is take your own bottle to the pub, get a couple of glasses "for water", and sneak off to the toilets to fill them up. Result: An evening with just as much booze, for far less money, and with the added frisson you get for being a CFlittle bit non-conformist. Cheers OP!

Not sure what having money to pay off a mortgage had got to do with wanting to save a tenner on a glass of wine by necking gin out of a plastic cup ( or stolen glass) at the airport !
I mean, how many drinks do you want to have before boarding a plane anyway???

OP said I was not classy when she knows nothing about me. People only get rich by being frugal.

I can't believe the comments you are getting for this. Are you really not allowed to buy a bottle in duty free and open it in the airport? I don't fly anymore so I don't know. I wouldn't smuggle wine into a restaurant, but if you buy a bottle can you not sit on the chairs in the waiting areas and drink it?

I am actually. Mortgage paid off. Tick. Cars paid off. Tick. No debts. Breast cancer treatment all private. So I am laughing at all these nasty comments.

Don’t take them personally. Who on earth wants to shell out £1 for one glass of average wine at an airport bar. Probably the people who don’t have their mortgages paid off etc. Honestly I highly doubt anyone will care or notice, go ahead I’d say. Enjoy your hol.

Why is it horrible? I am not doing anything that would cause any distress to anyone?

Yes you are .
You will be causing a security alert. Also
Unnecessarily diverting resouces from real threats.

fashionqueen0123 · 02/11/2024 17:48

I’d just get a drink on the plane it’s only a couple of hours difference

LadyofRutshire · 02/11/2024 17:48

The cheapest bottle of white wine in duty free is £6.50. Just looked it up for you op.

When we go away, I factor in airport money into our holiday budget so we can switch of and relax.

Just go to a bar and enjoy op. You are on holiday.

There’s no security alert when the wine has been bought from a duty free shop! Everything in there has passed security.

This doesn’t make sense. They don’t care what liquids you are bringing on board, only that they are in 100ml containers or smaller. And nowhere do you have to “say” on a container what is inside.

Because occasionally people have to have the liquids checked. For example after the 9/11 thing as because some of the chemicals used came in a liquid…

hence the reason for the machine. This is why they DO care what’s in the liquids.

Rich isn't the same as classy Confused

People definitely don't only get rich by being frugal Confused. In fact, frugality will almost certainly NOT make you rich (widely accepted economic theory).

Erm nope people get rich by earning a lot of money not through penny pinching.

Being classy isn’t about being loaded either.

Frugal people would do without a drink if they felt they could not afford it.

xyz111 · 02/11/2024 17:52

You're against anything anyone says, so not sure on the point of this post. If you want to do this and risk getting it confiscated by security, then chance it. Or pay for a drink if you want one. Or just don't drink alcohol before a flight which is healthier for you anyway. I'm sure you can decide either way.

Hiding under your coat and sneakily pouring a drink looks suspicious.

Trust they watch all behaviors like this.

rookiemere · 02/11/2024 17:52

Crikey I thought I was stingy until I read this thread.

I can't believe some people genuinely get enjoyment out of swigging alcohol from a water bottle in order to save a few quid. It's like going to any pub, you're not just paying for the drink, it's also having it served in a nice clean glass, at the right temperature at a table.

Just have a smaller glass at Wetherspoons and savour it, or accept that's what a large glass of wine costs these days.

Oh for goodness sakes. If there were actual, physical spaces to turn up to have a meeting, how many would attend? Guessing not many of you who are happy to be nasty online

GreyRockinRock · 02/11/2024 17:54

I don't blame you OP. I don't drink alcohol but begrudge the ott prices for soft drinks and food too.
I'm not sure you will get away with it though, and I wouldn’t risk missing my flight over it.

Or by inheriting money and being intelligent and having a good career like a doctor?

Are you that desperate for a drink? 😂

Right? There is actually another option which is you don’t have to get on a flight with children having drunk half a bottle of wine (where alcohol tolerance lowers).

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 02/11/2024 17:56

I'm as frugal as they come but lord, you'd just look incredibly sad.

Surely it's just factored in as an overall cost of the holiday?
