Penny pinching at Heathrow

We are due to go away soon from Heathrow T4. OH and I like a couple of drinks before the flight (at 9pm). However, I was shocked last time that a glass of wine is over £10 a glass. If we are discreet, could we get away with buying a bottle in Duty Free and drinking it before the flight (and disposing of the empty bottle before boarding). I know it's not allowed but has anyone done it before and got away with it? Quite frankly I'm getting sick of having to spend C 100 quid for something to eat and a couple of drinks each (family of 4) and am looking at ways of cheating the system 🤔

Personally I don't think £10 is bad for a glass of wine 🤷🏻‍♀️not really the point I know. I just factor airport costs into the holiday. Couldn't be arsed faffing about with paper cups just to save a pound or two

To be fair it’s around that in my local town, in the better pubs.

I don’t tend to drink much in pubs because it’s expensive. But it doesn’t sound as if the prices at Heathrow are particularly over priced.

Parques · 02/11/2024 17:38

The price of a bottle of (mediocre, over priced) wine in duty free is extortionate in itself! I’m not sure how much this would save you anyway!

Why do ppl on MN always have to make snide / unkind comments? I also don't agree with paying £2 plus for a bottle of water from WH Smith, when you can ask at the pub to refill your own bottle from the tap, or a water fountain where available. Or paying £2 for a mini box of pringles on certain airlines when you can take your own from the supermarket. Is that also unacceptable? Or is it just because wine is involved that people start to be judgemental?

Because on MN anyone who likes more than a thimble full of alcohol is regarded as having a problem .
Time to open the wine …..

What is? Have you not ever seen the machine? It’s incredible

Would you like to buy a bridge? . . .

According to the menu at Weatherspoons in terminal 4 a glass of wine costs from £5.25 a glass (£9.85 is for a huge 250 ml glass) - or you can buy a bottle from £23.95

An empty glass from a bar!

😂hope you don't mean a used one, like with lipstick n that on it.
I say go for it, just be discreet.
Enjoy your holiday 🌞

HonoraBridge · 02/11/2024 17:41

Wow. Embarrassing. Pay for drinks or pay for a lounge or wait.

They won’t be able to do that much longet

i was an engineer and they’ve got this incredible machine which no one is allowed to know how it works.

it works out the liquid in the bottles are what they say they are. Now me and my actual engineer buddies including chemical engineers can’t work out how they’ve done it but it’s insanely clever!

This doesn’t make sense. They don’t care what liquids you are bringing on board, only that they are in 100ml containers or smaller. And nowhere do you have to “say” on a container what is inside.

Differentstarts · 02/11/2024 17:43

Your on holiday, enjoy it, it's not the time to suddenly become tight

Can't believe the amount of mns looking down on you op.
Ffs get a grip of yourselves. 🙄

Ellmau · 02/11/2024 17:44

The point is that if this machine works as planned they can abolish the 100ml limit bc they will be able to test what every liquid is.

But they'll be looking for dangerous things, I doubt they'd worry whether you;d sneaked some booze on board.

So if you have money why on earth would you be so tight. That makes it even worse

onwardsup4 · 02/11/2024 17:44

@ShelleyCarpenter you're right they really don't care what's in them. Or that your liquids are under 100ml really. More than once I've forgot to take out big bottle of sun cream etc and it's just gone through

TinyGingerCat · 02/11/2024 17:45

If you can get a gold Amex you get 4 free lounge passes - much more pleasant that drinking luke warn wine from a pilfered glass.

BookishType · 02/11/2024 17:45

I’d be too embarrassed to do this.

And is £10 for a glass of wine a lot? Pretty standard price in any pub I go to (for a large glass). If it’s too expensive for you, why not wait until you board and it’ll be free.

spuddy4 · 02/11/2024 17:45

Oh God here's another thing I do that MN frowns upon. OP I have no idea about Heathrow because I've never flown from there but I'm just offering solidarity. I'm the one sitting in the bar at 4am having a pre flight drink and don't give a rats arse what anyone thinks, and no I am not desperate for a drink as I rarely drink at home due to being up at 3:30am for work and having to drive.

Loulouli · 02/11/2024 17:45

@SLeanne I admire your frugal thinking! Enjoy your drink and your holiday 😃✈

Not sure what having money to pay off a mortgage had got to do with wanting to save a tenner on a glass of wine by necking gin out of a plastic cup ( or stolen glass) at the airport !
I mean, how many drinks do you want to have before boarding a plane anyway???

They won’t be able to decant it

It will.be seen as a security risk by those monitoring the cctv.

It is in op interest not to do this.

Hiding acting shifty.
Hiding a.liquid.
ALERT ⚠️ ⚠️ ⚠️

MainStreetOrHighStreet · 02/11/2024 17:46

I don't drink alcohol, so this might be a terrible idea, but could you bring wine from home, decanted into water bottles (the non-see through kind) and then drink it before going through security?
