Penny pinching at Heathrow

We are due to go away soon from Heathrow T4. OH and I like a couple of drinks before the flight (at 9pm). However, I was shocked last time that a glass of wine is over £10 a glass. If we are discreet, could we get away with buying a bottle in Duty Free and drinking it before the flight (and disposing of the empty bottle before boarding). I know it's not allowed but has anyone done it before and got away with it? Quite frankly I'm getting sick of having to spend C 100 quid for something to eat and a couple of drinks each (family of 4) and am looking at ways of cheating the system 🤔

No sneaking about whatsoever.

notimagain · 02/11/2024 18:50

I’ve never, ever ever seen a gate check to ensure that passengers still have your duty free…or ever heard that a boarding card carries any indication that the passenger has bought Duty Free airside..

@Cerealkiller4U

they can and they do check liquids because of 9/11.im almost certain that’s why the 100ml came into force. Because of the explosive contents they brought in the flight.

No liquids involved in the 9/11 attack, the liquids ban was a result of a later plot (in 2006).

Not necessarily true - as a 20 year old on a teaching year out in France, one of my friends (who was also going home to the UK, and terrified of flying) bought a bottle of whiskey duty free, and proceeded to drink a large part of it before the flight, in secret (as per the OPs plan).

She was clearly very drunk but two guys she had befriended carried her on to the plane, and the attendants looked at me and said it was ok, if I agreed to be responsible for her (British Airways). I did, and the minute we sat down I handed her the sick bags, and the flight went without incident, and no mess was made, though she did vomit for most of the flight. I do remember the cabin crew being quite awesome though - there were two of them next to us and the first said “maybe next time, try Valium?” and her mate said “Maybe next time, try Virgin?!” So many years ago but it still makes me laugh! Friend was fine once we landed - though I never flew with her again, can’t imagine why!

Rules on being drunk have changed though due to fights abuse and planes being diverted.

I did see a guy who had bought quite a few miniatures of jäger bought from duty free stashed it in his rucksack get stopped and searched at the gates. Mind you he was clanking. 😏. I had the joy of sitting next to him and he then started pulling them out of the many pockets of his photographers gilet every time the cabin crew had gone by. Arseholed by Malaga and escorted off the plane.

Autumnalsun · 02/11/2024 18:50

I wouldn’t pay those prices.

I personally would leave slightly earlier and go to a restaurant or pub close by beforehand and have a meal and drink there.

Is that an option?

jannier · 02/11/2024 18:51

SLeanne · 02/11/2024 17:40

I am actually. Mortgage paid off. Tick. Cars paid off. Tick. No debts. Breast cancer treatment all private. So I am laughing at all these nasty comments.

You do know money doesn't mean class? Just saying.

Vax · 02/11/2024 18:51

You will end up looking foolish has really tickled me.

I fucking love this place.

Have you had a tipple or two already OP Grin

What happened in 2006? They used liquids to smuggle in explosive contents. Correct?

Cerealkiller4U · 02/11/2024 18:53

im akso correct. Yes they were used as liquids

Quitelikeit · 02/11/2024 18:55

Ofgs they don’t ever check your bags when you board to see if you have your duty free carrier bag 🤣🤣🤣

OP

please do enjoy your £10 wine. Why on earth should you fill the pockets of the worlds richest organisations when instead you can spend that money on something else

in the even you get to the gate and they ask where your wine is just tell them you put it in the bin/left it etc it’s really not going to be a big deal at all

TammyJones · 02/11/2024 18:57

NiftyKoala · 02/11/2024 18:19

Personally I wouldn't care if you get the duty free/empty glass. I just don't understand why you are so nasty to posters who don't agree with you. You obviously felt a bit like it wasn't ok because you posted this.

Yes
I'm confused by the defensiveness.
I personally wouldn't do it , but some people have made suggestions how to beat the system.
But op is being very rude in her replies.
No need at all.

NannyGythaOgg · 02/11/2024 18:58

I'm with you OP and have done similar - At Dalaman airport, where a glass of wine is an eye watering £16 .

My daughter also froze a bottle of water, emptied any defrost and took it through security. That was kind of just for fun though and she was happy to lose it if picked up. It backfired though, it was still half frozen when we landed back in the UK

FatCatSkinnyRat · 02/11/2024 19:03

LOL at being a Master of Wine.

If you were you would be very, very used to paying more than 10 quid per glass!

Gummybear23 · 02/11/2024 19:04

Have you tried AA op?

OptimisticMermaid · 02/11/2024 19:06

I sincerely hope the loos are private. Even security concerns would restrict cctv in toilets. It would be officially sanctioned voyeurism.

I haven’t read the full thread

But it is very easy to ask for a 2 x glass of water with ice at the bar.

Fine a seat and sit in the bar and pour your wine in.

I don’t understand the fuss here at all

I have sat in plenty airport bars and not even bought a drink - just wanted a comfy spot or charging point

The staff do not care one iota!

Imjustlikeyou · 02/11/2024 19:08

It's not beating the system to have secret drinks like a teenager in a bus stop.

It is though… 😂 I would 100% do this. I like a drink on me holidays! Without the hefty price tag. No one is realistically going to say anything!

QueSyrahSyrah · 02/11/2024 19:10

OptimisticMermaid · 02/11/2024 18:49

Ps - buy the wine then go into a loo to decant it into your little lidded cups.

Fucking hell. I would really really rather just not have the wine than this level of desperation.

loudbatperson · 02/11/2024 19:10

Quitelikeit · 02/11/2024 18:46

Oh and for those moaning about wine temperature she can get ice cubes 🧊 in needs be

Ice in wine is likely to make the wine too cold initially, preventing the full flavour from being enjoyed, and later on it melts and dilutes the wine, again ruining the taste.

Yes. Skip the siphoning in the toilet. Pour it in the glass in the nicest bar that you can find. No one will mind.

No, liquids defo not by the terrorists on 9/11 (your link has it correct, it states “liquids were used in a terrorist plot after 9/11 attacks”) ..[my emphasis]

The (foiled) attack that led directly to the L&G restrictions was this one:
