Penny pinching at Heathrow

We are due to go away soon from Heathrow T4. OH and I like a couple of drinks before the flight (at 9pm). However, I was shocked last time that a glass of wine is over £10 a glass. If we are discreet, could we get away with buying a bottle in Duty Free and drinking it before the flight (and disposing of the empty bottle before boarding). I know it's not allowed but has anyone done it before and got away with it? Quite frankly I'm getting sick of having to spend C 100 quid for something to eat and a couple of drinks each (family of 4) and am looking at ways of cheating the system 🤔

Op are you on the wind up? Just read your wine expert posts. If you're not stop being such a tight arse ! 🙄

SLeanne · 02/11/2024 18:24

Oh well I'll chance it. Thanks for all your lovely and not so lovely answers. Thank goodness I'm not a shoplifter! Doubt it''s going to make a massive difference to Heathrow profits anyway. Not like I'm swindling my local cafe by taking my own food. Good luck to you all. Can we close this now.

There’s no security alert when the wine has been bought from a duty free shop! Everything in there has passed security.

Sneakily opening something under cover .
Looks suspicious!

Remember the shoe bomber.
Suspicious activity was observed when he kept fiddling sneakily with his shoes.

You are missing the point. They don’t care if your 100ml bottles contain alcohol or shower gel.

they don’t care what’s in it if it’s not dangerous

but someone out a statement saying they don’t care liquid wise. Which is incorrect.

they can and they do check liquids because of 9/11.im almost certain that’s why the 100ml came into force. Because of the explosive contents they brought in the flight.

however. For absolutely logical reasons you won’t find out how they do it.

This is why I would save separately for airport spending. Airports are stressful enough without this scenario. Factor drinks into your travel budget.

Westofeasttoday · 02/11/2024 18:31

Is there anyone at this point that kinda hopes she does this and then gets caught? No? Just me? 😂

jannier · 02/11/2024 18:31

Take food, your teenage son drinks free water so that will give you £5 for kids drink and 9 wines between you....the price is supposed to stop drunks on planes .....why do you need to drink a lot?

vegaspot · 02/11/2024 18:32

Seriously,do not risk your holiday for the sake of saving a few quid at the airport 🙄

2chocolateoranges · 02/11/2024 18:33

Airport prices are part and parcel of a holiday. Bythe time we buy something to eat and a couple of drinks before taking off we have spent £80. We are on holiday and I’ll pay those prices.

Greenfinch7 · 02/11/2024 17:03

I'm with you OP- would never pay airport prices for a drink, but it is nice to have a glass of wine before a flight. Here's what I would do: bring empty juice bottles with screw tops; buy a bottle of wine in duty free; take it to the bathroom; decant it into the empty bottles; enjoy wine wherever you like in the airport, avoiding overpriced restaurants; donate all my extra cash to WaterAid, so everyone can have a drink!

All well and good, until OP gets pulled up for a bag search and sees the duty free wine has gone
Ive seen quite a few people get searched at the gates

No I do too 😂

Differentstarts · 02/11/2024 18:36

Are you going to act like this when on holiday. Sneak a packed lunch into a restaurant. Sneak a bottle of wine into a bar and ask for tap water. Your holiday sounds like a barrel of laughs.

I’m sure it’s been posted elsewhere, stating alcohol shows up different than shower gel/shampoo/ conditioner on the security scanners

And what do you think they will do? Seriously? I travel at least monthly for work, I’ve given colleagues and family members when travelling for leisure stuff to carry through for me, due to limits. Never ever has anyone said, oi, where’s your wine.

I've never seen anyone searched at the boarding gates! How do they know that you did have some wine and now you don't?

I think this is the product of a vivid imagination! Grin

they know because to buy it at duty free, you must present your boarding pass. it is scanned and they can see it when they scan your pass to board. They also know at the other end.

Quitelikeit · 02/11/2024 18:45

Op

you are getting a hard time here.

it will be no issue at all to do what you propose just be discreet

you are right airport prices are insane

I have recently returned from one airport where a large bag of crisps cost $11. I could afford to pay that much but I simply refused on principle

RJnomore1 · 02/11/2024 18:45

You really are a bit daft (and a bit unpleasant). The point isn’t to force you to buy over priced alcohol it’s to be able to monitor how drunk people are. I’m sure you’ll be back yo say you won’t get drunk, jolly good for you, it’s completely not the point that you are wonderful. What a joyless horrible way to start your holiday huddling in a corner when you claim to be loaded. £10 a glass of wine unfortunately in any far off the average these days and I live in Scotland which is supposed to be cheaper.

Mia184 · 02/11/2024 18:45

SLeanne · 02/11/2024 16:55

I wasn't planning on smuggling anything into the airport! I said 'buying it in the duty free'.

I don‘t think that you can drink the booze you buy at the duty free shop whilst at the airport / still in the country because you‘d then be required to pay VAT. If you get caught, it could be a very expensive bottle of wine.

Quitelikeit · 02/11/2024 18:46

Oh and for those moaning about wine temperature she can get ice cubes 🧊 in needs be

OptimisticMermaid · 02/11/2024 18:48

I think you should do what you want. I think get a bottle of wine in duty free. bring those cups with a lid that keep drinks at temperature. and then find a nice spot in the nicest bar you can find. then have a nice chat with your husband while sipping wine. very civilised. I’ve not done it myself but I approve.

OptimisticMermaid · 02/11/2024 18:49

Ps - buy the wine then go into a loo to decant it into your little lidded cups.
