Help! Valencia floods/Alicante

shreddies · 30/10/2024 07:48

This is a bit of a long one the tldr is that I am in Alicante with my 14 yo having been diverted from Valencia last night. Obviously had we known how bad the situation was going to get we wouldn't have got on the plane.

Our flight back is on Saturday morning.

I am now thinking we should stay in Alicante and make our way to Valencia on Friday, but it's very hard to tell what state Valencia is in.

Does anyone have any recommendations for places to stay in Alicante (budget c £100)?

And are there any mumsnetters in the area who might be able to give me a picture of what is going on in Valencia? It is very hard to tell without speaking Spanish but looks as if half the city is still under water.

Thanks, we've had a potter about Alicante and the amazing food market. Now back at the hotel for a rest. Crossing fingers about trains to Valencia by Friday. Any Alicante tips very welcome!

I'd stay in Alicante. Valencia doesn't need more pressure right now and more storms are predicted.

Don't go to Valencia, the major mortorway is shut and only emergency vehicles are allowed through. I'm an hour away from Valencia. Stay put in Alicante, it's completely devastating what's happened in the area 😞

I'm only keen to get to Valencia for our flight on Saturday morning. I don't think it will be covered by insurance. Obviously option b is to contact easyJet and try to get it changed.

Flights are going in and out afaik, as we had the option to continue our flight on from Alicante today, but roads to airport and metro are closed

Walk up to the castle, it is lovely and free.
Loads of lovely restaurants in Alicante. Beach? Some watersports?

You can change your flight on the easyJet app - do that and then relax where you are

shreddies · 30/10/2024 13:42

@newgirls I'd forgotten it's easy to change flights in the app and @rorosestone19 hadn't spotted super cheap flights when I looked.

That will be the four hours sleep!

Agree this is the best idea.

@rorosestone19 I wonder if I saw you in the Mercado central this lunchtime! I saw a tour by one of the tapas places, it looked great!

I quite fancy a trip to Alicante now - sounds lovely

hope situation improves in Valencia - wonderful city

Dawevi · 30/10/2024 14:03

I'm currently near Tarragona and the weather has been atrocious although nowhere near as bad as poor Valencia, however I drove to Barcelona the other day and the roads were like rivers at points.

I would definitely stay in Alicante, it's cold up here, windy, and in Valencia itself it's just too risky. Stay where it's safe and warm and have a lovely time!

And call your insurers because they might change your flights, you never know unless you ask.

movemamamove · 30/10/2024 14:05

You can get both train (book in advance at least a couple of days ) & bus from Valencia to Alicante so I wouldn't worry about travel between.

Honestly, I'd sit tight in Alicante - it's a really lovely town with beach, marina, historic parts, lovely restaurants. Benidorm is a shit hole & whilst the old part is marginally better and pretty in parts, I'd save your time & money and miss that one!

movemamamove · 30/10/2024 14:07

Can also recommend an amazing sushi restaurant in Alicante and agree with going on Viator and booking some excursion or guided tours. Honestly Alicante is a seriously overlooked & really lovely town

We're in the hotel that easyJet put us in. The word from native Valencians is that the metro is down and there are no taxis from the airport. It is sunny and dry though. I think what we will do is spend the day and night in Alicante and hope to travel to Valencia tomorrow. We could have gone to the airport and been flown there if we left now, but we're timed out if that option now.

In that case, I'd give it a day or two and seek advice from Easyjet. If Easyjet have moved a load of travellers from Valencia to Alicante and Valencia is still suffering later in the week, it will be easier for airlines to fly them back from Alicante than ship them all back to Valencia and spoil their holiday because of all the disruption.

El campello is lovely and easy to get to on the tram
