Holiday cottage welcome pack

I realise im
sounding massively spoilt but I’m really disappointed with my holiday cottage.

the main thing that annoyed me from the outset was the welcome pack, or lack theereof.
There was a little packet with
2 teabags
2 coffee sachets
4 uht milk sticks
2 sugar sachets
4 lotus biscuits

not even a pint of actual milk in the fridge.

what would you expect as a minimum? I’ve never had this small amount if
aruff. I was rather hoping for at least a small bottle of wine and/or a little pack of supermarket own biscuits.

am I being a spoilt brat?

ih and the internet is utterly hopeless, the telly needs reboot g on an hourly basis and the oven is at least 30 years old. It’s not as wide as a frozen pizza!!

We are in a wee holiday house atm and the owner has really thought about what his guests need. To our delight there is a library of books and loads of toys for the DGC. There wasn't a welcome pack as such but we are very happy with the amenities. Bonus points for guessing where we are!

Pm me please that looks lovely

Poets rest? Moville, Ireland. It's Gorgeous..stayed there.

MyStylish40s · 29/10/2024 18:49

I would only expect dishwasher tablets and toilet rolls

I’ve stayed in self catering which provided wine, teabags, cider, milk, biscuits, brown bread. It was a lovely surprise and very much appreciated, but certainly not expected.

I’d prefer to pay a bit less, and bring my own wine/tea/coffee

@peacejoypancakes I’ve noticed before that some bookings state that they include alcohol in their welcome pack, and to please request if you’d rather not have it

harriethoyle · 29/10/2024 18:49

I think it depends entirely on what’s advertised. If nothing YABU, If they say they’ll leave a welcome lack yours was rubbish 🤣 whenever we go self catering I take everything I need - that’s kind of the point.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 29/10/2024 18:50

Always expect nothing. Pleased to be surprised if there is something.

Currently in n wales and had a bottle of prosecco and a packet of welsh cakes here on arrival. (Along with every random thing that every prior guest left behind when they stayed....5 bottles soy sauce. 3 jars mustard etc etc.)

Stayed in a house in Blackpool and we had coffee and tea and milk and a full home-made Victoria sponge cake made by the mum of the owner.

BigDahliaFan · 29/10/2024 18:56

Ranged from nothing, fairly regularly, to a fully stocked kitchen with a bar of leftover bottles and home made cake.

SheilaFentiman · 29/10/2024 19:16

I love it when previous guests have left stuff, as I don’t want to buy olive oil/salt and pepper/sugar for 3 days 😀

ExquisiteIyDecorated · 29/10/2024 19:30

I always hope for a pint of milk but wouldn't expect it, but we bring tea, coffee, food. We wouldn't drink wine but might take it home to re-gift or donate to a raffle.

I'd be far more annoyed about the wifi etc.

YellowAsteroid · 29/10/2024 19:39

I wouldn’t expect anything. Self-catering is just that.

Bad internet and rubbish telly are far worse.

Arran2024 · 29/10/2024 19:48

I use holiday cottages a lot and I would be annoyed. At the cottage we stayed at last week in the lake district we got a fruit cake, fancy lemonade and milk and dog treats. Atcthe place we use regularly in Wales we get a box of lindors and a bottle of wine plus milk and bread.

Wherehas2023gone · 30/10/2024 07:27

We’re at a gorgeous place at the minute and we had waiting…
cheeseboard (including butter)
grapes
sausages
bacon
eggs
bread
loads of coffee pods
2 little bottles of local gin
tonic
lemons
prosecco
milk
tea
sugar
teacakes

Think we were a little bit spoilt….

DollyTots · 30/10/2024 07:45

The holiday cottage we’re staying in had a new ‘gift’ on arrival for us that we hadn’t had before.

A tiny cardboard box of cleaning products including a black bag, a sponge, a miniature washing up liquid and tea towel.

I feel this should really be included anyway, rather than market it as a gift! We had a similar pack available to buy for €10 at our holiday apartment. However we arrived late on Saturday evening and the office (where you coukd buy the pack) wasn't open til 9am Monday, so we had already bought all the items at the supermarket on Sunday. I'd have rather paid €10 extra on the rental price and not have the faff of buying it all.

Absolutely! Usually other places we stay have some basics like that. We only have to buy extra toilet rolls.

This was definitely marketed as their gift. The way it was packaged makes it look like it could be biscuits, so it was a bit of an anti-climax!

IME it generally says somewhere on the booking form or in an 'additional info' section as to whether a welcome pack will be provided.
The best we've ever had was at a little gîte in the Bordeaux area -- it included a bottle of their own wine (which sold for almost £££ in posh wine bars in the UK), some apricots from their own trees (absolutely delicious) and lovely home-grown fresh haricot beans, yellow instead of the more usual green, plus bread, milk etc.
We were very happy.

kennycat · 29/10/2024 07:44

Really? Didn’t know that.
im
just a bit disappointed really. I mean if all four of us had travelled for a really long time to get here and we couldnt all even have a cup of tea it’s a bit pants to only have 2 teabags and 2coffee sachets. 😩

I was pulxx sc not even call this a cheap holiday compared to others I’ve been on.

also discovered no soap, washing up liquid , dishwasher tabs or bin bags.

hopefu The day improves from here on.

if course you could have a cup of tea or .coffee. Why didn’t you take tea bags/ coffee with you?
I wouldn’t want a welcome pack, if I’m self catering I bring things with me, that’s the point of self catering. The last place we stayed had an option of adding “arrival pack” (and be charged for this of course) I thought it’s a very good idea.

DelphiniumBlue · 30/10/2024 10:55

The last place we stayed ( beachfront in Hythe, can give a link if anyone wants it, it was absolutely fab) had a fab welcome pack, including bread, eggs, croissants, yogurts, milk and butter, and I think there were mini jam pots too. Also cannisters with tea and coffee and a coffee machine, and sufficient cleaning stuff.
Conversely I have stayed in a place ( which advertised as including cleaning stuff) which had nothing to clean up after DS was sick on the first night, with no shops near or open. There was a tiny half empty bottle of washing up liquid - about 10ml - and that was it. Lots of places have had dishwashers and washing machines but no detergent .
I've stayed in more than one place which let to 5 of us, but only provided scones/pastries for 4, and in a hotel where I've had to go to reception to get toilet paper, where they handed out one roll at a time, despite DH having foodpoisoning. Several places where they supply one roll of toilet for 5 people for a long weekend.
I always pack the extra now, but if we were travelling other than by car, it would be very inconvenient.

Mine is in Scotland so cannot leave alcohol due to licence.

I leave
Tea, coffee, sugar, blue and green milk. Additional pods for machine including hot chocolate. Biscuits.
Herbs and cooking oil.
Toilet rolls for stay, hand wash, bin bags etc.

Then a welcome pack. Products from a local business, bath and shower bombs, bubble baths, soaps, wax melts, that sort of thing.

Also happy to sort arrival meal if requested.

We have a holiday cottage. We leave a very superior bottle of wine - nothing else. Personally, I can't see the point of bottles of milk, packets of biscuits and all the rest of it - if you're self-catering, you'll be bringing those things with you.

I would much prefer some of the other 'nice quality basics 'that have been mentioned than wine which i don't like .
I just came back from a beautiful cottage we were given a good bottle of wine, chocolate ,cakes and savoury snacks , none of this was expected but its always a nice surprise to find a lovely welcome pack.

jannier · 30/10/2024 16:36

It's self catering so you know your shopping the minimum is enough for a hot drink

minipie · 30/10/2024 16:41

I genuinely don’t expect anything.

I’m slightly miffed if the following are not supplied :

Toilet roll
Kitchen roll
Dishwasher tablets
Washing up liquid
Clean sponge/cloth

Nice to have but not expected:

Laundry pods
Salt
Olive oil
Spices
Coffee pods if there is a machine
Tea bags
Fresh milk
Cling film

I certainly don’t expect anything to “tide us over”. We bring food with us or manage to survive without until we can get to a shop. Nobody starves.

jannier · 30/10/2024 16:41

greengreyblue · 29/10/2024 07:25

I would expect as a bare minimum, a jar of coffee/ tea, bags, cooking oil, salt and pepper and loo roll. The rest I bring but it’s always nice if there is milk.

Why don't you bring tea or coffee along with your other food? A whole pack of each per guest so they can take them home over a £10 gift of something that is probably not your brand. Or do you want an opened packet that's been used by several then left 4 weeks?

Bodeganights · 30/10/2024 16:42

The best I ever stayed at had
Wine
Flowers
Still warm bread
Jam
Honey
Real butter
Handmade chocolates
2 Scones
Cream <that super thick stuff.
Milk and
6 eggs.
The rest have varied from nothing to any few of the above.

The one I'm in right now had a pint of milk and a packet of 6 biscuits.

I'm happy enough with milk to be honest. The one thing I need is a cuppa on arrival.
