Majorca July - family of 5

Hi all, I booked flights for our family of five to Majorca in July to get a bit of a shock at the prices of hotels! We have three girls aged 12-19. I’m looking for a mix of luxury, views and fun for the youngest. I have currently held a basic apartment in Puerto Pollensa (4 nights), two nights in Hotel Soller (2 bed suite) and six nights in penthouse of Ponentmar Palma Nova. Could any of you mumsnetter Majorca experts advise me of any better ideas or hidden gems. The first nights are aimed at the baby of the house but I can’t find anywhere with slides etc in that area. Any better areas to try or family rooms that won’t cause my eyes to water! Thanking you!

I do prefer to move about a bit as like the variety. Also it means we can afford to do some bits better than others! I do take your point though maybe we have less need to move in Majorca as it’s small and we are more beaching it. We are paying 600€ per night for Soller and Palma Nova and was trying to get Puerto Pollensa for less. Might feel more flush in the New Year though!

Why not? We love Palma, Deia, Soller, Pollenca, loads of gorgeous parts , I too like to visit a few places when I'm holidaying somewhere.

True, it's not a large island.

There’s ( was? ) a water park in Port d’Alcudia, down the road from Port du Pollensa.

The beach at Port Pollensa is cute but small.
Port d’Alcudia is on a massive bay, beach is wide and shallow.

When you say Soller, do you mean Port Soller, that’s where the beach is.

TeamGeriatric · 21/10/2024 21:46

I'll go against the grain and say I'd rather move around than look at the same resort for a fortnight. I don't have advice on hidden gems, sorry.

Would a package with TUI or Jet2 not be cheaper than separate flights and hotels? I agree base yourself in one place and travel about - driving or taking the bus is so easy, or booking a day tour would be hassle free.

Maybe find a villa then tailor the days to each DC (and yourselves!), e.g. a water park, shopping day in Palma, beach day etc.

Soller because of the hotel, which offers a shuttle to Port de Soller. The hotel looks good with fab views so not seaside for those two nights

Too late sadly as I booked the flights before realising how expensive accommodation is and how much gorgeous accommodation is adults only

Don't know if it has family rooms but good value and good location for the city and beach -

I think if I was doing two centre in Majorca, I would stay in Palma itself for a couple of days before moving north to Puerto Pollensa. It's easy to do a day trip to Soller on the little train from Palma. Whilst I wouldn't choose to stay in Alcudia, it's near enough to Puerto Pollensa for you to access one of the water parks there. Old town Alcudia is cute too. If you were to hire a car after the stay in Palma then you could visit lots of different places on the island.

I agree that accommodation is expensive there though - although it doesn't need to be as expensive as €600 a night.

See above, 600 euro max but hoping for half that for four nights in Puerto Pollensa to reduce the overall cost

Three moves means more days of no hotel room during the day - those days can sometimes get wasted as you have to carry your stuff around before you can get into the next place.

I would hire a 3 bed villa and a car and do day trips.

Deadhouseplant · 22/10/2024 14:57

Honestly Mallorca is so small Id just find one place and hire a car to explore the island. Accommodation is very expensive in summer especially in the honeypot resorts of Puerto Pollensa and Port de Soller, also very much in demand too.

I live in Pollensa and second that's it's easy to get around the island by car as it's not that big. You can get a bus from the port all the way to Palma too.

I don't like Palma Nova so can't comment there, but July in the Port is never going to be that cheap. I think the Pollensa Park is good for families - it's been there forever anywhere. There are also some good agro tourism places too.

LadyDanburysHat · 22/10/2024 15:11

I would also just get a villa for the whole time and have a car to see the island. We got a villa in Pollnenca and visited all over the island. Often eating in Puerto Pollenca or Alcudia

yorktown · 22/10/2024 15:17

I can't think of anything worse than having to be out of your accommodation at 10 am and not into your next place til 3 pm, while only moving an hour up the road. Will you be hiring a car to store the luggage? And laundry! How will you dry all the beach wear?
If you really have to move, I'd stay in Palma for a few nights and then your favourite resort/most distant location for the rest of the time.
