Where’s hot but not too hot in August?

We normally go away in May to avoid temps over 30 but next year we have to go away in August. We just want a week in the sun but I cant be out in very high temps so I’ve never looked for holidays abroad this time of year. Can anyone recommend a country or city that not too hot over the summer break?

Top half of France?

Brittany? Carnac?

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 20/10/2024 08:34

The mountains in Switzerland Germany Austria France etc

lavenderlou · 20/10/2024 08:34

What would you define as hot? I think Madeira has temperatures consistently in the low to mid 20s. We usually go to the northern part of France where weather is similar to the UK but usually a little warmer. It's not reliable though and have had anything from 21 and wet to 38 and boiling.

Salzburg for a few days and then a spa hotel in Austria would be lovely.

Northern Australia is pretty good at that time of year! Full of Aussies from down south heading up for their winter sun. Usually lovely weather. Rather a long way to go for a week though!

VioletCrawleyForever · 20/10/2024 08:43

France or the Channel Island.

Madeira would work, and is a lovely place to visit.

Majorca/Menorca are fairly pleasant if you want a beach holiday. It was around 25-30 when we were there this year, warm enough for the pool or beach without feeling like you were getting baked to a crisp! I personally wouldn't go any further south in August, too hot for me.

Netherlands

Forgottenmyphone · 20/10/2024 10:15

Northern Croatian (Istria region) is high twenties but rarely goes above 30.

Cape Verde - but I didn’t think there was much to do or see.

Orangebadger · 20/10/2024 10:32

We always try to avoid over 30 places too. Normally central France works but last year that was a fail as it was everywhere is Europe the time we were away, it was well over 30 where the same region the year before was perfect 25/26.

The Netherlands I find colder than the UK and we go there a lot!

Switzerland, Austria, Germany have more moderate temps than Mediterranean countries but tbh if you hit a heatwave in August in Europe, everywhere can be too hot and it's miserable. So there is an element of luck too.

NuffSaidSam · 20/10/2024 10:37

A few people suggesting Austria. I've been to Austria in August a few times and always above 30, sometimes 35+.

Sweden and Finland have a nice climate in August (although it could be cooler than you want).

FrothyCothy · 20/10/2024 10:38

I was going to say Madeira too. I can’t cope with heat and it was no more than 25 at the end of August when we were there.

superking · 20/10/2024 10:41

The Alps is nice at that time of year - temp usually hovers in the mid-high 20s (though can be higher/ lower) but it's rarely humid and cools down overnight.

The Balearics in August? OP asked for places that aren't too hot! The average in August in Mallorca is 30 degrees and it often gets above 35, and 38-40 not unusual.

36-38 every day when we were in Majorca in August!!
Canaries rarely get above 30 though even in August, we were in Tenerife in August and it got to 28 one day which was "unusually hot" according to our tour guide!

I love Menorca but the last couple of times we've been the humidity in August was a killer.

User2123 · 20/10/2024 11:20

Sorry that was just my experience. We've been a few times in the second half of August and never had above 30 and always found it really pleasant! Maybe we were just lucky though!

We were in Ibiza in August and it was 35 consistently for two weeks. We have a place near La Rochelle and it can be over 40. Northern France would be ok.

imeanwhy · 20/10/2024 11:44

The UK?

imeanwhy · 20/10/2024 11:45

I mean all depends what's too hot. So maybe not. And of course risky. But it can also be the perfect weather during summer

AnnaMagnani · 20/10/2024 11:48

I've done Austria in August and it was 35+ all the time.

I think you need to be further north - Brittany, Normandy, Netherlands, Scandinavian, Baltic Coast.

But in all of them you could just get caught out by a hot summer/heatwave but at least it wouldn't be Greece temperatures.
