Berlin: best places to stay with teen son

Mumofboys2006 · 13/10/2024 20:52

I’m torn between Mitte and Charlotteburg. Latter sounds great with Tierpark and Zoo but far from tourist attractions.
Specific hotel recommendations also appreciated. I’m looking at BA packages at the moment.
Would also love recommendations for things to see in three days.
Im a German speaker but haven’t been to Berlin in a really long time!
TIA

Mitte over Chalottesburg. I remember that being quite 'out'

Having said that, our last stay was with Scandic hotels chain, we stayed at the one by Bikini Berlin (shopping center and trendy food court). Reasonable price, excellent buffet breakfast, easy to get around.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 13/10/2024 21:12

We stayed in Mitte, it was very convenient for most things and we walked a lot.

Mitte over Charlottesburg.

MotelOne near Hauptbahnhof

kinkiskarma · 13/10/2024 23:06

Mitte, we did the same and stayed in the NH mitte near the Friedrichstrasse. It’s nothing special but clean and comfortable, good places to grab breakfast nearby and super convenient for the airport transfer.
anywhere is in easy reach if you’re happy on Lime bikes/scooters!
is your teen son into history because the museums are absolutely next level, best I’ve seen anywhere in the world. Holocaust memorial, Jewish museum, topography of terror, Berlin Wall memorial and the gallery. I’d also recommend going out into east Berlin for the stasi museum and the Gedenkstaette Hoehenschoenhausen. Traunenpalast was also well worth a visit with the audio guide, was right next to the hotel. Sign up for the reichstag/Bundestag when you arrive (take photo ID to book a slot). Also recommend cycling for the sights — brandenburg, the cathedrals etc, museum island. Although I was there 3 days and saw no art or churches as there was just so much else to see. Amazing city and I’d love to return.

I stayed in hotel opposite the Natural History museum and we walked everywhere! So many great things to see, book a walking tour, enjoy!!

Hello, I travel to Berlin every month for work and have done for 5 years. Mitte over Charlottenburg and other good hotels close to Bahnhof Friedrichstraße are the Melia and Eurostars. In this location you have great transport links as well as being a 2 min walk from Museum Island. There is a direct train from the airport to Friedrichstraße for a few euros whereas in a taxi it's around 70-100 euros and takes longer

hopsalong · 14/10/2024 00:04

I stayed in the very reasonable Kastanienhof hotel near the Zionskirschplatz (bit north of Mitte but much less touristy) in the spring and recommend strongly. Stayed in a much more expensive hotel in Charlottenburg in August and it's a pretty dead area, a bit like Oxford street and the hinterland.

LlynTegid · 14/10/2024 09:17

I've been a few times, would choose Mitte of the two. Especially now with more travel options with the U5 extension open.

Drivingoverlemons · 14/10/2024 09:28

I used to live in Charlottenburg and never had a problem getting anywhere I wanted to on public transport.

I am going soon and staying at a Hilton in Alexanderplatz.

MissAmbrosia · 14/10/2024 09:53

We stayed at the Ibis Hauptbahnhof recently and the U5 stop is practically outside, plus buses and trams - it made getting everywhere really easy. Motel One is close to there too.

We visited Berlin this summer and stayed at the Pullman Berlin Schweizerhof which I would recommend. We were right near tiergarten and the zoo, but also everything was extremely accessible on public transport.
I would recommend this area for the zoo, tiergarten for a walk through and see the sights - cafe am neuen see was fab at night also. Lots of restaurants and breakfast places around, shops and lots to see

thanks - yes is this near the Kurfürstendamm as well?

The area appeals to me - hopefully a bit less touristy

Moxy is cool!

newfire · 15/10/2024 07:17

Yes @Mumofboys2006 it is really close and we walked by daily past the kaiser Wilhelm memorial church. It was a great place to stay and we got our train direct to and from the airport from zoologischer garten and walked up 10mins to our hotel.

I would say Mitte as well.

Reichstag - you can book online in advance - it's officially an enquiry but they come back very quickly with your confirmation.
You then can just walk in, you need your ID and there is a baggage check. When we went in August, the queue for tickets for the day was quite long and you then don't know what time slots are left.

It's free, so don't get caught in any private websites, this is the official parliament one:
https://www.bundestag.de/en/visittheBundestag/dome/registration-245686

Some of the museums are currently closed, do check if you want anything specific.

We got a weekly travel pass for central Berlin. You can add a day extension if you want to go to Potsdam for example.

We had a s/c flat, so can't comment on hotels.

German Bundestag - Registering to visit the dome of the Reichstag Building

Current information on visiting the German BundestagPrior registration is required in order to visit the German Bundestag. An online booking request form can be found at online registration....

Thanks. Just looking at packages, Charlottenburg is cheaper on the whole.

Motel One Alexanderplatz.

Lotsofthings · 15/10/2024 11:32

This summer we stayed at the Berlin Marriott Hotel in Potsdamer Platz, that worked well as most things walkable, and only needed trains for zoo, computer museum, Potsdam. We liked the Panorama in the Musuem, zoo.

Henleylady · 15/10/2024 11:37

Would a low cost flight and a hotel not be much cheaper. The train into the center from the airport is less than €4. I'm not understanding why you need a package unless you are using avios or the like to pay for it. Cost up both options.

We've stayed near Check point Charlie a few times. Last time in the Wilde aparthotel which was lovely. Very close to a street bike rental - we biked everywhere on the bike lanes. Went with teens. Lots to see.

Thanks, yes I would usually do that, with Easy Jet, but am finding it works out better to do a package with BA, as its half-term I suspect.

We were in Berlin last week. Stayed in the Premier Inn, Alexander Platz. Really easy to get there from the airport, fab location, and easy to walk to lots of the main sights or hop on U-Bahn. Would definitely recommend.
