I know the Suffolk coast already. But was thinking about going north, (cumbria? north yorks) somewhere off beaten track... Any thoughts gratefully accepted.

Not north exactly but Pembrokeshire is lovely.

TheDullWitch · 21/04/2008 14:16

Yes, that's a good thought... thanks.

i was thinking of suggesting pembrokeshire too. it is stunning.

Scotland, scotland!

We had beautiful, very off the beaten track cottages on Skye and Mull over the past few years.

We did both these over the may half-term, and it's a really good time weather-wise. Last year we were on the beach on bank holiday monday playing cricket and paddling, while England had torrential rain!

LessThanImpressed · 21/04/2008 14:20

East Neuk of Fife - beautiful!

Farb · 21/04/2008 14:21

OMG the very very* most beautiful part of the world British Coast (imvho) is the Lleyn Penisula (N Wales). we're heading back for 2 weeks in June.

MozzybearBaileysIce · 21/04/2008 14:22

Round here is very unspoilt and incredibly lovely

Bridie, i'm trying to convince DH about Pembrokeshire.

Spillage21 · 21/04/2008 14:35

Gower peninsula...plus near enough to Swansea if weather goes tits up (as it did for me last year)

branflake81 · 21/04/2008 15:10

Northumbria. The beaches are amazing, really clean and with white sand. I was blown away when I went. Cumbrian beaches not so great because of the quick sand!

fortyplus · 21/04/2008 15:12

The beach at Bamburgh is hard to beat and is usually half empty.

anchovies · 21/04/2008 15:12

Completely agree about Northumbria, chilly though! The first time we went to Bamburgh I was instantly smitten.

UnquietDad · 21/04/2008 15:13

Another vote for the Bamburgh area of Northumberland here.

fortyplus · 21/04/2008 15:13

Here you are

TheDullWitch · 21/04/2008 15:40

Oh thank you. Bambugh looks amazing. Bit brrrrr though. Mind you, who can tell what weather we ll get in last week of May wherever you go.

Norht Yorkshire. Staithes and Robin Hood's Bay are both lovely little fishing villages with virtually no traffic as local access is allowed only. It felt very safe for the DCs

We went to Staithes last summer and only left the village twice in a week. There is a bit of beach, some lovely pubs, fossil hunting (we found an ammonite and a bivalve as well as lots of "bits" of fossils), crab fishing off the jetty, and it's one of the UKs best kept surfing secrets (so lots of ogling of half naked surfer dudes for me whilst sunbathing ) there's loads more beach and fossil stuff, Whitby 10 miles away and the North York Moors on your doorstep

We were so impressed we are going back this year.

East Neuk of Fife is also fab, but maybe a bit too far North for you.

ClairePO · 21/04/2008 15:51

Northumberland has some of the most beautiful coastline, so another vote from me too.

And as for the weather I remember going one easter (I guess a late Easter) a few years ago and it was gloriously hot and sunny. Like you say you can never be certain on the weather.

Last time we went we even got to sit and watch some people get trapped on the causeway at Lindisfarne because they tried to cross when tide was coming in, the lifeboat had to come out to rescue them. Hasten to add they were all OK (though I suspect their car wasn't).

Habbibu · 21/04/2008 15:53

Another vote for East Neuk of Fife (but I am biased...). Can be remarkably sunny, and is just lovely.

motherinferior · 21/04/2008 16:03

We've just come back from Pembrokeshire and it was utterly fabulous.

TartanKnickers · 21/04/2008 16:05

We're heading here in May

fortyplus · 21/04/2008 21:49

Driving up over the pass at Applecross is a bit like going to the moon

Another vote for Northumberland, Bamburgh beach is fantastic. We've been in july and hardly a sole on the beach. Northumberland Visitor Guide

mosschops30 · 22/04/2008 21:34

Northumberland, my home county. Beautiful!!

ellingwoman · 22/04/2008 21:37

Am hoping to go to the Northumberland coast for 10 days in August. It's great to see so many votes for it!
