Flight Delays – Worth Trying to Get Compensation?

Deeloveskaya · 19/09/2024 14:25

We had a flight delay on our last trip that threw off our entire
holiday schedule. I’ve heard mixed reviews about trying to get
compensation, and I’m wondering if it’s worth the effort? Has anyone here successfully claimed for a delayed flight? I’d love to hear how the process went for you—did it take forever, or was it relatively easy?

Yes, I’ve got thousands out of BA over the years. It’s simple to do on the website.

Defiantlynot41 · 19/09/2024 14:29

Yes, it's simple- I used Resolver and got 2 x €300 compensation plus they gave us a voucher for restaurant during the delay and a taxi transfer rather than coach transfer at the other end

EarthlyNightshade · 19/09/2024 14:29

Yes. Did it land more than 3 hours late (if it was shorthaul, I can't remember if it is longer if it is longhaul)?
Was it the airline's fault?

I always claim compensation, depending on the airline, it can be easy or quite arduous (but always worth it!).

Tiswa · 19/09/2024 14:33

If you fall within the guidelines (has to be a minimum of 3 hours from landing time (goes up with distance) and something that the airlines can control (operational reasons or technical issues - weather delays/when air traffic other systems do down) it is easy to claim

TenarAtuan · 19/09/2024 20:03

Yes. Easy, even with budget airlines. Have never used a middle man.

Can I ask how much do they normally charge to claim? Thanks.

I don't understand why you'd use a company? It's very easy. We got ours paid automatically by whizz air.

Luckypoppy · 20/09/2024 10:29

We each got £500 for a 5 hour delay in summer!

Surroundyourselfwiththerightpeople · 20/09/2024 10:31

Claimed successfully from Whizz Air (4 hour delay) and EasyJet (cancelled flight)in last couple of years.
No need to use a company.

Anjo2011 · 20/09/2024 10:35

We had a six hour delay recently with Ryanair. They said it was due to air traffic control ( out of their control) and the flight having a technical issue at its previous stop. We spoke to a representative at the airport and they said there’s no compensation available as it’s not their fault. When we got home we completed the on line compensation form and got a big chunk of our flight cost back. It was easy and the money was transferred 14 days after.

ItWasOnAStarryNight · 20/09/2024 10:39

Had to go and look up Wizz Air as 2 posters added in a random h and I thought I was going mad 🤣

Why would you use a company? Fill in the form and either get compensated or don't.

Deeloveskaya · 20/09/2024 10:43

You had better luck than me, I got nothing out of BA last time, the airline is definitely getting worse.

So was it over 3 hours late and not beyond their control? If so you would've got compensation.

Why do you need a company to fill in one form?

Do it yourself, don't use a company (as others have said).
You could check out moneysaving expert for templates, etc. Sometimes it takes a bit of tenacity, sometimes they pay out straight away.
Are you sure that you meets the terms for compensation?

Gazelda · 20/09/2024 11:22

I claimed from easyJet last year. A very simple process and had the compensation payment within 10 days.

eurochick · 20/09/2024 11:23

If you are covered by EU regulation 261 (or the identical Uk regulation) it is simple. The conditions for and amounts of compensation are set by law.

I claimed from easyJet for a very delayed flight. I filled in a short form on the website. They acknowledged and admitted my claim three minutes later and I got the compensation a few days after that. No need to use any sort of intermediary.

Defiantlynot41 · 20/09/2024 11:24

@Deeloveskaya it was free. Was a few years ago though, may have changed www.resolver.co.uk/complaints/travel-complaints

Deeloveskaya · 20/09/2024 10:47

How much does Resolver charge?

It's free.

Spomb · 20/09/2024 11:27

If you’re not getting any compensation from BA then it means the flight wasn’t eligible. It’s very straightforward if the flight is eligible, quick form on the website, it took seconds. I also included a receipt for nappies I had to buy for the delay and a takeaway for when we got home as food was supposed to be included on the flight and they didn’t have any. They will also pay for delays for parking etc. I got just over £1000 and the money was sent quickly.

If you want to claim for delays to activities you couldn’t do on holiday though, then this would go through your holiday insurance.

Who did you fly with, how long was the delay, how long was the flight, and what was the reason for the delay?

parietal · 20/09/2024 11:29

i've been trying to claim from Ryanair for a 6 hour delay but their stupid online form won't let me enter my details. it says the IBAN / SWIFT codes are wrong when I know they are right (copy-paste from the bank). has anyone else had this issue?

angstridden2 · 20/09/2024 11:33

We claimed for a long haul flight with Tui. Got £500 each through Resolver but airline initially said our flight didn’t exist…luckily I had pics of boarding passes and screen showing flight numbers and flight delay timeline.

flipent · 20/09/2024 11:49

The below is relevant to a short haul (under 1500km) cancellation with less than 7 days notice and with a delay of more than 3 hours from the original landing time. May be relevant to others.

I don't know why you would want to pay a company when it is this simple.....

Dear Airline ,

I am writing regarding a delayed/cancelled Airline flight.

The judgement of the Court of Justice of the European Union in Tui & others v CAA confirmed the applicability of compensation, as set out in the Sturgeon case. As such, I am seeking compensation under EC Regulation 261/2004 for this flight. The details are as follows:

Booking reference:
Passport number:
Existing complaint reference:
Flight number:
Departure airport:
Scheduled departure time:
Arrival airport:

Number of passengers:

Based on the above details, I am seeking the fixed compensation as specified in EC 261/2004.

I have also applied directly to you for reimbursement for additional hotel and travel costs relating to this delay.

I look forward to a full response to this letter within 14 days. If I do not receive a satisfactory response I intend to pursue my complaint further, which could mean taking it to court.

Yours faithfully
Name, Address, Phone number

SeatonCarew · 20/09/2024 12:12

I've successfully claimed twice, once from Easyjet a few years ago, and once from Ryanair this year. Both were very straightforward, no need to use a middleman.
