Urgently needing advice. Help me book my hotels please.!!
Will be in Malaysia last 2 weeks of December. I already have plans for KL. Bird park, aquarium, petrona towers and have booked my hotel there for 4 nights. I desperately need your recommendations. Where to go after KL and explore. I'm thinking Malacca, Port Dickson

I did want to go to langkawi and pennag.
According to google weather in the east of Malaysia isn't ideal in December.
Thank you

My friend went to Penang and loved it.

Oops sorry!

Would travelling up to Thailand be an option? I vastly prefer Thailand to Malaysia.

Add in a city break to singapore or somewhere give you ideas for the next visit!

Hi, what a lovely trip :) You haven't said who you're travelling with or where before/after, but I have a few suggestions.

Langkawi is on the West Coast, near the Thai border. The weather on that side is great in December and it's a beautiful place. Have stayed at the Pelangi Resort and can recommend that, particularly if you have kids. I would pick Langkawi over PD for the beaches BUT it depends if you want to take flights or not.

Penang is incredible for food, you can't go wrong. Budget dependent, the E&O is really nice, but Malaysia has quite a cool boutique hotel scene, so I'm sure you can find alternatives.

You could also consider Melaka, which is a beautiful/walkable town (city?) with lots of history and interesting tours, things to see and places to eat.

As someone else mentioned, you can't go wrong with a city break in Singapore - so much to see and if you want a really easy beach break, there's Sentosa, but it will be much pricier than anywhere in Malaysia.

And as mentioned above, if you have 16 days left of your trip (unless I misread your other message!) then you could fly to Phuket and do some island hopping between there and Krabi or if you want to see more of Malaysia, travel to Borneo.

Teenytinyvoice · 06/09/2024 15:06

The Blue mansion hotel in Penang is epic, I loved Penang.
we also flew to the perhentian islands, which were incredible. We stayed at the bubo resort.

Butterflyfern · 06/09/2024 15:09

Borneo? I can recommend staying in Kuching. Go see the orangutans and a mangrove river trip. Wouldn't do 16 days there though.

If going south is better for the weather, how about a bit of Indonesia too?

Relaxd · 06/09/2024 15:27

From Langkawi you can get an hour ferry to Koh Lipe in Thailand, the back into Malaysia. Borneo also very doable.

TakeMe2Insanity · 06/09/2024 16:22

OP - Singapore is tiny so what may seem a bit isn’t far. Whats your budget?

southchinasea · 06/09/2024 20:25

I lived in Malaysia for five years and loved it, I'm sure you'll have a wonderful holiday. In Peninsular Malaysia I'd recommend Georgetown, Penang for culture, food and architecture - try to stay in a heritage hotel like Muntri Mews. ChinaHouse cafe / gallery is recommended there too. Bon Ton resort on Langkawi is highly recommended - we did a couple of wildlife/ bird watching tours from here. You stay in beautiful renovated kampong (village) buildings. I love the East coast - traditional Malay culture. Tanjung Jara resort is lovely. Check the monsoon season though. The islands around Tioman - Sibu (sea gypsy resort) etc - for snorkeling and swimming. Tiger rock on Pangkor island.

Thank you for all your recommendations. I will be travelling with my DH and 2 DC toddler who will turn 3 once there and a 8 year old.
Lanhkawa does look beautiful. I'm concerned about the rain.
I did think to go to Singapore for 4 days. Flights were cheap from KL but the hotels are just too expensive for me.

I am travelling with dh and 2 very young dc

i can thoroughly recommend the berjaya resort on langkawi if you do end up looking there (as PP said it is off the west coast)

BobbyGentry · 07/09/2024 07:36

I have been recommended both

Turtle 🐢 Selingan Malaysia
Sandakhan Conservation

and

https://rawaislandresort.com/the-rooms/
Rawa island Mersing, Johor

Personally, with a toddler and 8 yrs old, I would head to Legoland Malaysia in Johor and then travel over to Singapore for the day/night. Legoland Malaysia also has a fantastic water park.

Recently, we stayed at CUBE Family Boutique Capsule Hotel at Chinatown, Singapore. It maybe in budget. Sleeps 4. Singapore and Johor are fabulous places to visit with a young family.

Rawa Island Accomodation

We offer a wide variety of rooms and accommodation around the island to cater for families, groups of friends, couples and single travelers.

If you're looking for stunning tropical beaches and lovely blue seas, Port Dickson is not it. Tolerable at best, at worst if the currents are unfavourable the beaches there can get oily/littered. Port Dickson's only main selling point is proximity to KL. But if you do want to go there, the place to stay is the Lexis Hibiscus.

The West coast of Peninsular Malaysia is not as "seasonal" as the East coast, so even in the "rainy" season (which December is not, on the West coast) you will rarely experience enough rain to stop your activities all day. Not to mention that rain in the tropics is (1) warm and (2) intense but brief, an hour or so at a time usually in the late afternoon.

So if you want beachy island life in December, I concur with everybody else - go to Langkawi, it's gorgeous and the beaches are almost as good as the East coast islands (the water is less magically clear and turquoise). If you want a bit of beachy island life plus a lot of culture/food/colonial history, go to Penang*.

People generally don't go to the East coast beaches, or the East coast islands, during the monsoon season unless they like surfing in grey seas. And IIRC a lot of the stuff will be closed or reduced provision during the monsoon anyway.

*As you have young children, check out Escape Penang water park which is nestled into a forest setting, there's a ski lift through the canopy to the top of a hill, there's Go Ape type stuff, there's the world's longest water slide, there's awesome splash pools. It's marvellous and my DC (now teens) are obsessed with it.

PS. Let me know if you want Penang accommodation recommendations.

Thank you so much for such helpful advice.
Yes please do share where in penang to stay.

I found this hotel and I thought it looked very nice and was within my budget

Would 4 nights in KL and 4 in penang be enough. Or should I stay longer in one

You could stay on Penang island and do a couple of nights in Georgetown followed by however many nights at a beach location. We often do that even though it's only 30-45 minutes drive between the two areas.

In Georgetown I would suggest one of the heritage hotels. Somebody has already suggested Muntri Mews and I agree, it is lovely! Other options which have family rooms might be 23 Love Lane or Hotel Penaga, also both absolutely gorgeous and charming.

A beach area closer to Georgetown is called Tanjung Bungah, the hotels here are more budget-friendly as the beach is not that good and surrounded by residential areas. I have recently stayed at the Mercure and it is actually very pleasant, would recommend for anyone who is counting the pennies.

The main beach area in Penang is Batu Ferringhi, it is a very long stretch and one end has eroded in recent years due to changing sea currents. So my favourite hotel used to be the 5* Rasa Sayang (and it is still a gorgeous hotel with stunning grounds and pools!) but the beach there is much reduced. For a young family, next to it is Golden Sands (awesome kid-friendly pools). A bit further along is Park Royal (very nice indeed), also Hard Rock Hotel (grounds and pools are lovely, interior decor is not to my taste). More budget-friendly but still nice is the Bayview Beach Resort which is at the far end of Batu Ferringhi Beach - this is both good (further away from bustle and shops) and bad (further away from bustle and shops). Or you can get a whole apartment at By The Sea, which is what we often do, but be aware each apartment is individually owned and so the standard is variable.

The final beach area furthest away from Georgetown is called Teluk Bahang and is much quieter and more peaceful. At the moment there are only 2 operative hotels there. The Angsana is a shiny new 5-star stunner, everybody I know who has stayed there says it is wonderful. The other hotel is Bahang Bay Hotel, 4-star - also quite a new building, the only downside is you have to cross the main road to get to the beach.

If you decide on Langkawi, I agree with the PP who recommended Berjaya Resort. It's not as upmarket as many of the others, but is set in a lovely location on Burau Bay with forests rising up behind it and calm sheltered waters for paddling in. Also, conveniently near to the famous cable car.

Definitely Georgetown in Penang - for culture, food and heritage and then Langkawi for chilling on the beach!

In Georgetown we stayed at the Royal Chulan just because we wanted somewhere not too expensive with a pool for the kids as it was august and baking hot - there's not many hotels in central Georgetown with pools. it was great, big connecting rooms, amazing buffet breakfast and walking distance to everywhere in Georgetown.

And agree with the recommendations for Berjaya in langkawi as well.

naichick · 08/09/2024 07:14

Hi OP,
In langkawi you will find cheaper hotels around the pantai cenang area, the Berjaya is lovely but its out on its own and you will be limited to eating their more expensive food options.
We stayed at holiday villa langkawi in july it was opposite loads of restaurants and is the more quiet end of the beach. The hotel is a bit old compared to some of the new hi rise ones but we loved the pool, gardens and its right on the beach.

KoalaKube · 08/09/2024 08:08

We went to Langkawi in April and I really rate it, stayed in 2 resorts and also spent time in Pantai Cenang. But the highlight was 4 nights at the Datai a truly special magical resort.
There’s a new series starting in bbc iPlayer of Amazing hotels starting shortly and the Datai features in an episode sometime in September.
