Short Break Ideas for Two Ladies somewhere in the UK

Looking for recommendations for a short break/ long weekend with my friend. We'd like somewhere with interesting places to see and visit. We are in our early 60's and enjoy visiting country houses, NT, little bit of shopping (not high street), coffee shops/ tea rooms. Somewhere with interest and home comforts.
Probable Radius of up to 200 miles from Berkshire/ N Hants if possible.

Recommendations for accommodation too, two rooms in a B&B or AirBNB with parking too.

York? Edinburgh? Deal? Lincoln? Aberdeen? Fishguard? Totnes?

Ukholidaysaregreat · 21/08/2024 20:41

Oo! Sounds lovely! Can I come too?

ShrubRose · 21/08/2024 22:01

I would suggest Matlock. Calke Abbey, Kedleston, Hardwick Hall, Eyam Hall in NT, shops, tea rooms, countryside. Meet you there!

Summertimer · 21/08/2024 22:02

Cotswolds, Derbyshire Dales. York is fab

Vettrianofan · 21/08/2024 22:05

Edinburgh.

Lewes. Quirky town to potter around, and lots of pretty villages nearby. Great walking. Lots of NT places in East Sussex too.

itsallbunkum · 21/08/2024 22:08

Bath.

We are a bit younger but had a fun weekend like that in Lincoln last year.

My other suggestion would be Alfriston in East (or possibly West) Sussex.

I went to the Herefordshire/ Radnorshire border area a couple of years ago and loved it. Black & white timbered villages, Hay on Wye, Black Mountains, Llanthony, Clun, Arthur's Stone, historic churches, several National Trust properties although think I only managed Powis Castle and Croft Castle. More tea rooms than you can shake a lace doyley at. I would happily go again.

Bath

Another vote for Bath. Suggest train and town centre hotel or bnb

tinytemper66 · 21/08/2024 22:24

Cambridge?

Ruthietuthie · 21/08/2024 22:26

Bath? Cambridge? Wild-card, Beverly.

Daisymay2 · 21/08/2024 22:32

Suffolk and/or Norfolk. Lavenham has more tea shops than you could possibly visit, magnificent church, NT property and another beautiful house, Little Hall. Then there is Long Melford, 2 Tudor houses, another “wool” church and more tea shops and pubs. Add on Blickling, Ickworth, Felbrigg,, Oxborough, Holkham Hall and you are well set.

Would Ludlow or Wells be too far?

squirrelnutkin10 · 21/08/2024 22:59

Winchelsea near Rye, Sussex.... lots of history, on the coast,....my D Aunt stayed there last summer with her friend at a place called Eagles Nest at Greyfriars, attached to an old gothic mansion...they shared a 2 bed apartment but haven't stopped raving about it since....

provemewrongthen · 21/08/2024 23:20

Malvern.

Gorgonemilezola · 21/08/2024 23:24

Suffolk - Southwold, Aldeburgh, Lavenham. Mins ere if you like birds and walking. Woodbridge, Sutton Hoo.

Kent - Canterbury, Whitstable, Tonbridge Wells, Sissinghurst, Great Dixter.

MikeRafone · 21/08/2024 23:38

Stratford upon Avon, Warwick Leamington spa,

nt includes baddesly clinton, packwood house, charlecotte, Upton house,

then there is Shakespeare’s house, burial place, wife’s house

then Warwick castle, lord Leicester hospital.

i suggest not staying in Stratford as more expensive due to high tourist level

the trave lodge in Leamington is in an old hotel, where Princess Victoria stayed. Or the Premier Inn which is set in the elaborate white creamy in the Main Street

plenty of good restaurants in Leamington

MinnieMountain · 22/08/2024 08:53

Rye

I agree

I second the Cotswolds, Bath and Stratford as great short breaks. We've also recently had a weekend in Arundel which was brilliant.
