Would you go to Sharm el Sheikh

SwordToFlamethrower · 06/08/2024 15:02

The area is "safe". We have a 3 week holiday booked for January.

Would you go?

Last time I went, was a few days before the Arab Spring in 2011. Was awful. Not looking for history to repeat itself.

No. I hated it there.
culturally I was not a good fit there and won’t be returning. I felt like almost everybody was corrupt and I didn’t feel safe anywhere.

Lovepeaceunderstanding · 06/08/2024 15:14

We went to Luxor many years ago now, I would not return to Egypt now I wouldn’t feel safe and also I had the worst trots of my life while there; I thought I was going to crap myself in the mummy museum. 😳 I was quite ill for a while after we returned.

coxesorangepippin · 06/08/2024 15:15

Not for a gold clock

Hoppinggreen · 06/08/2024 15:19

Not a chance.
Awful place AND there are sharks

JustSayNoNo · 06/08/2024 15:27

If you want a holiday where you stay in the resort and sit by the pool, absolutely, it'll be safe.
If you want to explore the area, I wouldn't want to risk it.

Also - if you're on the resort for 3 weeks, you will soon start to tire of the food, no matter how broad your palette is! It tends to be very same-y.

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 06/08/2024 15:27

Yes. Went at Easter. Had a great time.

not for 3 weeks mind, I would have been bored for 3 weeks! But for a week of pool
action after what felt like months of a cold rainy UK it was immense!

TemuSpecialBuy · 06/08/2024 15:36

No my DB made us go.

I hated it.
The way the men treated me as a white woman was gross.
one particularly grim bloke at the hotel apologised to my brother for disrespecting him having spent an hour or two leering at me and making weird comments when I went to the bar.
presumably he though my DH was my boyfriend or husband.

i also didn’t feel safe outside the hotel and I have lived in some rough bits of London

6gallonsaday · 06/08/2024 15:45

It's the kind of place where you just stay in the resort on a sunbed/ all inclusive deal, right? So if that's what you are looking for yes, if not no.

Chypre · 06/08/2024 15:46

I am scared to go to Cyprus, which is a bit too close to Lebanon to my liking... Sharm is even closer to Israel. Stray missiles and all that.

6gallonsaday · 06/08/2024 15:49

Is stray missiles an actual risk?

Chypre · 06/08/2024 15:56

@6gallonsaday for a plane? Far fetched, but not impossible:

January 8, 2020: Ukraine International Airlines PS752 had just left Tehran when it was shot down on January 8, killing 176 people aboard. Iran announced on Saturday that its military “unintentionally” shot down a Ukrainian jetliner, killing all 176 people on board.

July 17, 2014: Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 is shot down over rebel-held eastern Ukraine en route to Kuala Lumpur from Amsterdam.

March 23, 2007: An Ilyushin II-76 cargo aircraft belonging to a Belarusian airline is shot down by a rocket shortly after takeoff from the Somalian capital, Mogadishu, killing 11 people.

October 4, 2001: Seventy-eight people, mostly Israelis, were killed when their Siberia Airlines Russian Tupolev-154, flying from Tel Aviv to Novosibirsk, exploded in mid-flight over the Black Sea. A week later Kyiv admitted that the disaster was due to the accidental firing of a Ukrainian missile.

October 31, 2015: at 06:13 local time the Airbus A321-231 operating the flight exploded above the northern Sinai Peninsula following its departure from Sharm El Sheikh International Airport, Egypt

6gallonsaday · 06/08/2024 16:03

Ok thanks. In risk terms, you would weigh that up against the very much higher number of flights that did not get shot down, and people who were unharmed?

I'm considering a trip myself and it's one of the options, I hadn't even considered missiles!

Merro · 06/08/2024 16:13

I have never come across anyone who didn't get at best upset stomach and at worst serious diarrhoea in Egypt. Don't know whether it's a hygeine issue or pool water but I wouldn't risk it.

Campcritters · 06/08/2024 16:16

Nope

wizzywig · 06/08/2024 16:17

Nope I'm too classy

Some context is needed otherwise there’s a danger of people getting the risk out of proportion.

Some of those “strays” listed by a PP were deliberate acts, and/or also took place whilst the aircraft was directly over a disputed area or area where a conflict was taking place.

With reference to @Chypre, the chances of a “stray” SAM or AAM from a conflict involving Israel/Iran/Lebanon reaching out, meandering around the sky and hitting an aircraft routing Europe to Cyprus is, to say the least, highly remote.

As far as flights to Sharm from Europe are concerned it’s still highly unlikely, especially given the routes most of those flights currently take and the routes they would certainly take if conflict broke out.

rioting24 · 06/08/2024 16:22

Not under any circumstances or if I was paid £1million.

Combattingthemoaners · 06/08/2024 16:23

I went about 11 years ago. I didn’t like it at all. The men would leer, make comments and try to touch me. I didn’t feel safe. Not sure if it has changed in that time though.

Oh and this. We got upset stomachs there.

Growlybear83 · 06/08/2024 16:24

I don't like that sort of holiday but I would go back to Luxor again in a heartbeat. We've been to Egypt many times, and fell in love with the country, so much so thst my daughter lived there for a year when she first started work. I wouldn't have any worries about security at the moment, although I realise the situation could change.

coolkatt · 06/08/2024 16:28

Look the comments here are
Basically ridiculous.

The UK has just had travel restrictions put into it for the trouble here just now. How embarrassing.

The trouble is in Israel, not Egypt.
And for those who don't know, sharks
Come into uk waters too.

Go online, go onto some of the Egypt/Sharm webpages, private groups etc, and get views of those who are actually there at the moment or just recently back.
U can look up almost
Every country of the world and find an issue with it. Do proper research then decide.

Me😁
I went to Hurghada, Luxor, the desert overnight and had not a spot of bother with tummy upsets, terrorists or sharks.
What I had was a dream holiday full of history, snorkeling on reefs and enjoying the hospitality of a family in Luxor one evening.

It was wonderful.

I'm six visits, me, my husband, and my daughter have never had even the slightest upset stomach. Before our first visit, an Egyptian friend warned us that Egyptian money is crawling with germs and most people who get upset stomachs pick up bugs through handling money rather than food. We've always been scrupulous about using hand gel every time we touch any money, and obviously avoid hotel buffets where food has been sitting round for ages, ice, salads thst have been washed in tap water. It always surprises me that people take precautions and then brush their teeth in tap water.

Boltonb · 06/08/2024 16:31

No, because it sounds like an awful place for a holiday. That’s why it’s relatively cheap. But as you’ve booked, yes you should go.

Monkeybutt1 · 06/08/2024 16:33

I've been to Sharm and Hurghada and loved both, I've never noticed felt safe.
My parents go multiple times a year and have never had any issues.
Yes some get upset stomachs, if you do go to the chemist and ask for Antanil that will sort you out.
Egypt is a wonderful country with lots of history and if you like diving which is why we went it is truly amazing.
