Would you go to Sharm el Sheikh

The area is "safe". We have a 3 week holiday booked for January.

Would you go?

Last time I went, was a few days before the Arab Spring in 2011. Was awful. Not looking for history to repeat itself.

Three weeks?!

Me😁
I went to Hurghada, Luxor, the desert overnight and had not a spot of bother with tummy upsets, terrorists or sharks.
What I had was a dream holiday full of history, snorkeling on reefs and enjoying the hospitality of a family in Luxor one evening.

It was wonderful.

Can I just add that I went solo to Egypt and was met with nothing but kindness and wonderful hospitality.
And yes to pp, I was careful about brushing teeth with bottled water etc., but never once had an upset stomach.

A lot of people who sneer about Egypt have never been. Its an incredible country.

cariadlet · 06/08/2024 16:36

It depends what you want from a holiday and why you're asking.

I wouldn't go there but that's because I have the impression that it's full of big hotels and AI resorts which I would hate.

I've been to Egypt a couple of times (including being in Cairo when the Tahrir Square protest camp was closed down) and found it a very interesting country.
I've never been ill or had problems with men behaving inappropriately.

If your only concern is safety, then I would go.

NellieJean · 06/08/2024 16:44

Not unless it’s changed for the better in the last ten years. Everyone is trying to get money out of you. Women get hassled and I’d include any teenagers in that, A lot of old Russians with their “nieces”.
Food is iffy in hotels and better in some outside restaurants but hygiene may be more lax.
I wouldn’t go if it was free.

BigDahliaFan · 06/08/2024 16:46

I absolutely loved Cairo, travelled independently with DH, and Luxor and a Nile Cruise. No upset tummies or issues at all. This was about 6 years ago though.

I've been to Sharm years ago and Hurghada at the end of the Nile Cruise as an add on. I can't imagine going to those again and I have no idea what anyone would do there for 3 weeks unless they were diving.

letsjustdothis · 06/08/2024 16:46

I wouldn't holiday in a place only 100 miles from an active and unpredictable war zone with airborne conflict in the form of missiles and drones, no.

Look the comments here are
Basically ridiculous.

The UK has just had travel restrictions put into it for the trouble here just now. How embarrassing.

The trouble is in Israel, not Egypt.
And for those who don't know, sharks
Come into uk waters too.

Go online, go onto some of the Egypt/Sharm webpages, private groups etc, and get views of those who are actually there at the moment or just recently back.
U can look up almost
Every country of the world and find an issue with it. Do proper research then decide.

I agree with most of your points, I love Sharm and think some of the posts on here have been ott...
Buuuuut the sharks are a real concern. People aren't being killed or maimed off the coast of the UK are they?

Ineedaholidayyyy · 06/08/2024 16:52

No, but not because I'd be worried about the safety aspect, but more so because I always hear of people getting ill and I have emetephobia. I know you can get ill anywhere, but it does appear to happen quite frequently in Egypt, whether that's the dirty money, water, extreme heat , food hygiene that causes it.

Changeychang · 06/08/2024 16:58

Been multiple times, never been sick. Found outside the resort too hassley last time though and pervy guides on the snorkel tours, so I won't be going back. If you stay in the hotel and their beach you'd be fine though. And yes the food is likely to get samey for three weeks.

hellswelshy · 06/08/2024 17:22

I went over 16 years ago, never felt the need to return. Hotel was lovely but everything else just didn't suit me and dh - food wasn't great, wine at the hotel was poor, felt restricted in the resort, very very hot. Trip to the town we were hassled alot. Snorkeling was the only highlight. It really depends on what you want from a holiday.

YellowDaffodilRedTulip · 06/08/2024 17:39

Yes, and I have been 10+ times. The tourist resorts are in their own little bubble. We did a great (long) day trip to Cairo to see the Pyramids too.

Phoebefail · 06/08/2024 17:47

Lived in Cairo for a year, worked, drove no real problems.
I have had upset stomach in Calais and in Belgium, but we think that was the mussels.
You could always go to Centre Parcs in Nottingham!

samarrange · 06/08/2024 17:49

I wouldn't be put off specifically by the idea of stray missiles (vanishingly unlikely) or violent revolution.

However, if violent revolution is unlikely, it's precisely because Egypt is ruled by a military regime that tortures quite a lot of its opponents. That may or may not be something that makes you think twice about spending your money there. Clearly there are plenty of people for whom it's not a big deal, and of course Egypt is by no means the only popular holiday destination where you don't want to get caught criticising the government.

SwordToFlamethrower · 07/08/2024 13:10

Sorry, to clarify, it's an all inclusive in an aqua park, 4 stars. Got a really good deal!

6gallonsaday · 07/08/2024 16:01

Have been doing some basic research. More than a missile, a bomb or other attack in a tourist resort is a possible threat. But, they are so tightly controlled by the military it seems unlikely. And, even if it happened you'd be incredibly unlucky for it to be at your resort, right where you are.

Channellingsophistication · 09/08/2024 08:41

I’ve been there twice many years ago and whilst we had a good time, I didnt feel totally comfortable there. I wouldnt return.

AegonT · 09/08/2024 12:06

No. I've been once and hated it. The way the Nile Valley people have come over and trod all over the Bedouin people is sad. So much fake tacky stuff. Too hot. The food in the hotel wasn't great.

herecomesthesunyes · 09/08/2024 12:07

Three weeks is so long!!!

herecomesthesunyes · 09/08/2024 12:10

Loads of Russians although maybe not now…, Dahab was good for a week in a good hotel but no longer than a week. I would have done a tour down the Nile then a week at SS/Dahab. What kind of hotel are you staying in?

twentysevendresses · 09/08/2024 12:50

Not even if they paid me! Nope!! 👎

HaveYouSeenRain · 09/08/2024 14:05

Not if you paid me. Don’t want food poisoning on holidays.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 10/08/2024 17:26

Have you already booked the holiday OP?

Personally it's not anywhere I've fancied going, although I know people who have and have enjoyed it .

I don't think it's a good idea to commit yourself for 3 weeks to somewhere you are unsure about and didn't enjoy last time you went .

Spendysis · 10/08/2024 17:37

It’s not somewhere I’ve ever fancied going

3 weeks seems a long time in one place especially if you are staying just in the hotel complex

Punkrockprincess · 10/08/2024 17:40

Food poisoning capital of the world? No ta.

Anjo2011 · 10/08/2024 17:42

Not for me no. If you are happy to be in a complex for three weeks and feel ok with going there that’s all that matters.
