Playdough on airplane?

I wondered if anyone knows the answer to this!

Is playdough allowed on an airplane? Just 2 tubs and a few cutters. It's the only thing that keeps my 3 year old entertained at the moment so hoping!

Book of stickers and some blank paper

I've taken playdoh before on a train without incident.

You need a large tray for it which covers the whole table area to minimise the risk of bits going on the floor. It's very soothing. We usually travel with something like this for the kids (though I can't remember the brand of ours) to contain crayons/paper/toys so there is minimal 'spillage'.

That is a good idea, not necessarily for playdoh but for all kind of things incl. food. DD was a master in destroying baked goods and we always took a muslin square to cover the tray and then wrap the remains up with.

No way. It stinks. And even if you don’t let any go on the seats/floor (I really don’t see how you can guarantee this in advance), the crew don’t know you won’t. They will judge you, as will passengers. Don’t be That Parent OP. iPad and headphones and Peppa Pig or a lovely new sticker book if you don’t want screens. This is honestly one of those times you’ll look back on in ten years and cringe at how precious you were.

Sockmate123 · 05/08/2024 00:06

Absolutely not. 3 year old should be able to be occupied with lots of stuff, colouring book, lego (large pieces), dolls/action figures, ipad and headphones let them watch their favourite programme.
Have some consideration for crew/next passengers in the seat.

I take play doh every time. I don’t know what people’s children are doing with theirs but ours doesn’t get everywhere. Just get fresh tubs so it’s not crumbly. In any case crumbs hoover up like everything else.

It has been looked at by security though. I didn’t see the Semtex connection. You would need to put it through with the liquids.

Just take colouring books like everyone else. Sorry but no to playdough.

Greentomatoes21 · 05/08/2024 00:43

I once got playdoh confiscated when going through security 😅 reason given was similarity to substance used for explosives...who knew?!

OpizpuHeuvHiyo · 05/08/2024 00:47

I can't stand the smell of playdoh and if I was on a plane within 3 seats of a child playing with playdoh and obviously unable to escape it I would probably start throwing up.

Can you get something else that doesn't smell so bad? Home made playdough just made with flour and water and salt with colour dyes would be much better from a considerate-to-fellow-passengers POV. No better for the air crew obviously.

Opine · 05/08/2024 00:54

@OpizpuHeuvHiyo I can’t stand the smell of perfume or fabric conditioner. Hardly offensive smells but they knock me sick and trigger migraines. Nothing I can do about it though.
Play doh is hardly a warm egg sandwich is it. No one can account for random scent intolerances.

GoFigure235 · 05/08/2024 05:18

I can't stand the smell of beer so next time I fly, I'm going to insist those in the rows round about me don't order any.

UpTheMagicFarawayTree · 05/08/2024 08:41

Does playdoh really smell that strong? I've never really noticed it myself, there are surely a lot of worse smells out there!
