Close premier inn for rail into London?

locket2009 · 25/07/2024 11:30

Hi

I am looking for a premier inn that has good rail links to London ? We would be travelling from the north east of England and looking to stay on a Friday to attend a Saturday matinee concert or alternatively travelling down early Saturday morning to hotel area then going into London by rail and returning and staying over on the Saturday ?

Any ideas of towns / areas that would be suitable ??

Thanks in advance

Milton keynes? about an hour on the train.

Brilliant Travelodge (new, with super rooms) at Docklands.

We've used the one at Westfield Stratford which is right beside the station although may be booked up with people going to Abba Voyage

VestPantsandSocks · 25/07/2024 12:05

Which London station are you coming into?
And where is the concert?

Singleandproud · 25/07/2024 12:10

Westfield Stratford if coming in at Liverpool Street, just outside central London

Farringdon is a short tube from Liverpool Street, Get off at the Barbican tube station as is closer than the Farringdon one, has good tube links, food was good and as expected from a PI, rooms all seem to be upgraded but were a little smaller than normal and windows slightly smaller giving less natural light but to be expected in a central London one I think but the central location was great, 5 minutes walk to St Paul's. - Downside was you couldn't check in early but they did bag storage on arrival and departure day.

Chelmsford. Premier Inn across the road from the station. Trains are 30mins into London Liverpool St

Oganesson118 · 25/07/2024 12:17

Welwyn Garden City has a premier inn very close to the station. Direct train to Kings Cross takes about 20 mins or direct to Moorgate takes about 40 (just does more stops)

Havanananana · 25/07/2024 16:27

As the OP is coming from the North East of England, the most obvious places on the A1 road or the rail route into London would be Stevenage or Welwyn Garden City.

The Premier Inn Central Stevenage is actually on the edge of an industrial estate about 10 minutes walk from the station, while the Holiday Inn Express is more convenient as it is opposite the station. Direct trains into London take less than 30 minutes - slower stopping trains about 50 mins.

If driving down on the M1 rather than the A1, then Milton Keynes has about a dozen hotels in Central MK that are all within 5 minutes of the station.

East coast main line from Newcastle to King's Cross. Possibly Peterborough? Or Newark?

Havanananana · 25/07/2024 16:49

Newark is barely half way between Newcastle and Kings Cross, and about 2 hours on the train from London, so not really 'close'. Peterborough is not much closer, but benefits from Intercity trains into London that can be as quick as around one hour, but Stevenage or Welwyn Garden City are closer and have more departures into and out of London.

LutonBeds · 25/07/2024 16:51

Why not just book one in London? There’s one on Euston Rd.

Greentreesandbushes · 25/07/2024 16:53

Try just looking for “London” for the date and filter “lowest to highest”. You might find one in the City (business district) surprisingly cheap. If not they will list ones in striking distance.

ponygirlcurtis · 25/07/2024 16:57

We just stayed in the Watford Junction Holiday Inn Express, right next to the train station, 20mins into Euston.

TheCrenchinglyMcQuaffenBrothers · 25/07/2024 16:57

How are you travelling down? Car or train? And why are you wanting to stay outside of London - parking, sightseeing, cost etc?
More info help to give you better advice.

blackcherryconserve · 25/07/2024 16:58

All depends where your train is coming in to.

stickthewellyin · 25/07/2024 16:59

It will probably be cheaper just to stay at one in london.

By the time you have added on the train fares from a town outside into london it will probably work out at the same price anyway.

TheCrenchinglyMcQuaffenBrothers · 25/07/2024 17:08

….and also where’s the Matinee? Shaftesbury Avenue, RAH, South Bank etc etc

leeverarch · 25/07/2024 17:11

Letchworth Garden City - just off the A1. The Premier Inn is in the town centre on Station Road, which tells you how close to the railway station it is, and trains from there go straight to St Pancras in about 40 minutes.

Why not just book one in London? There’s one on Euston Rd.

Do not stay at the Premier Inn at Euston - there's no air conditioning and the rooms were 27.5C. Impossible to sleep and not worth the money.

Cattery · 25/07/2024 17:12

Premier Inn Eltham on the Sidcup bypass? 20 mins into Charing Cross from Mottingham or New Eltham stations

Britinme · 25/07/2024 17:15

Watford Central Premier Inn is about half a mile walk from Watford Junction, from where you can get a train into Euston that only takes about twenty minutes.

yesbutnobut · 25/07/2024 19:10

Archway. On the northern line so easy access to King's Cross (assuming you're coming to London by train)

locket2009 · 25/07/2024 21:01

Thanks everyone I was thinking of driving down so close to London without London prices as think I'd need a two night stay . Could consider the train but trains plus hotel plus tickets is making it a expensive trip. We won't have long been back from holiday so wanted it to be cost effective but it's for my daughters birthday otherwise I'd have changed the dates

Might be an option to do an early train sat morning then matinee then late train home but it makes it a long day

Some great suggestions though so I'll have a good look at all the options

Have you looked at rail cards? They make a massive difference to train prices if travelling with a child 15 or under and may work out cheaper than you think. You can also get 241 at some attractions when travelling by rail, or at least you used to.

TizerorFizz · 25/07/2024 21:40

You should get family and friends rail discount and book in advance. Don’t travel on the day. It won’t be off peak.Travel midday the day before - I would just go into London on the train. Why drive? Why stay in Stevenage or similar? Loads quicker and easier on the train. These areas not far from London aren’t hugely cheaper than London. If you go the day before, it’s gives you a chance to look at London.
