Places with climate similar to Mallorca but cheaper

Good morning, we're currently staying in Mallorca near Santa Ponca and are really impressed with climate here compared to Greece, Cyprus or Turkey this time of the year.
Air and sea temperature, greenery and, the most important, humidity feel just perfect for the summer.

Could you please recommend something similar in terms of climate but cheaper for next July-August, within 5 hrs flight from London?
I'm fine with self-catering as long as I don't need to use car for food shopping.

The Algarve has a ‘breeze’ if you are near the sea, keeping it cooler.

I follow a SM page in Lagos and they have mentioned needing a cardigan for evenings.

Difficult to advise on prices. Depends what you choose to stay in, how long before that you book, etc

Charley50 · 24/07/2024 11:13

Why not return to Mallorca but a different area? I agree it's lovely. Or the non-party bits of Ibiza?

Have you been to Corfu? It's very different to Mallorca as greener and more humid, but it's still lovely.

CointreauVersial · 24/07/2024 11:14

I think there are some cheaper resorts in Menorca (next door).

Sirine1708 · 24/07/2024 11:16

@LydiaLinus on prices, here we're paying on average 2000 EUR for a week in all inclusive hotels (with waterparks) that are 3-4*, and more than £3000 for 2 weeks for a villa without a pool, and I booked the villa before Christmas and hotels also in advance. I feel Majorca accomodations are hugely overpriced, but we didn't have to book anything in 2022-2023 so maybe I'm wrong and it's like this everywhere now.

Menorca is lovely
Madeira is very green most of the year, and hte climate is more constant. You'd need to check temperatures for different times of the year, but it can be wet in June.
Tenerife is nice in parts - the north is more green. Possibly a bit too hot at this time of year though.

YourOpinionIsWrong · 24/07/2024 11:19

Sardinia? The Aegean and the Mediterranean coasts of Turkey? Sicily?

Sirine1708 · 24/07/2024 11:51

@YourOpinionIsWrong I've looked up humidity in Mallorca (around 50% right now) and in Sardinia and Alanya (Turkey) - 70%.
I heard it was almost unbearable in Sardinia last August, and mid-July till mid-August was the worst time to stay in Alanya, we spent a summer there once and I literally didn't want to go out for a month. And I'm fine with heat in general - aircon was on 30 degrees - but it's humidity that makes you feel like you are being immersed in hot syrup. It gets better after mid-August though so I'm not opposed to Turkey in general.

Where did you stay in Greece? The Eastern Greek islands (Sporades, Cyclades) are much less humid than the Ionians to the west. Cyclades in particular are known for being breezy and bone dry. Hot sun but always a breeze. Not much greenery though.

Also weather of course varies year to year. I’ve actually read about Majorca being humid compared with Greek islands so perhaps your experiences have been unusual or it’s due to the exact spots you chose?

Sirine1708 · 24/07/2024 12:02

While still hot, humidity looks bearable in Bodrum and Cirali and even Kemer for some reason.

Portugal is still very reasonably priced. Croatia is beautiful, and more expensive than it was, but still doable.

Citrusandginger · 24/07/2024 12:08

I have had some good holidays in Menorca and love that it's a short flight. Mainland Spain is probably worth a look too?

I've just looked at Benidorm which I know is not everyone's taste, (although I'd recommend Altea) and that is currently 37%

We were staying in Crete and Rhodes, but it was 5 years ago. I didn't have issues with climate, but remember Crete lacking greenery apart frome olive trees plantations. Same with Cyprus.

I'be been to and around Lisbon in autumn once and remember very cold ocean. Wonder if water temperature can reach 22C there in July-August.

@Citrusandginger actually after staying at Mallorca I'm not that scared of Benidorm. I feel British population here is represented in the proper ratio and that's it. Though kids-friendly hotels cost the same in mainland Spain as here so I'd try Menorca first.

Altea is beautiful!

The Algarve or the Canaries.
The Canaries are in the middle of the Atlantic so get a breeze and dont top more than 28 usually.. average around 22.
Same with the Algarve.

I have to say we have been to Mallorca many times. We went in mid-June this year and I was surprised at how green it was. We normally go in July/August so it could be that the extra heat in high summer reduces the greeness, or maybe it is just greener this year due to rain.

MermaidEyes · 24/07/2024 12:56

I was in the Algarve recently, breezy every day so the 30 degree temperatures didn't feel so bad. Even needed a cardi near the beach in the evening. I love Menorca at this time of year but by August it gets ridiculously humid.

Water temperature in Algavre is 19C right now 😥It's 22 in Tenerife so borderline. 24C and above in the rest of the places mentioned here.
I'm afraid anything below 22C is a deal braker for us if therr's no waterpark on site, because DS likes staying in the water for a very long time.

Ah that's a shame @Sirine1708 But then I don't do the sea, only swimming pools!

CointreauVersial · 24/07/2024 13:46

If you want cheap, here's a left-field idea - Albania! It's on our list for next year.

In 2021 we've spent 2 months in Bulgaria (went to Cyprus first and then decided we want to spend all the summer by the sea and the last-minute prices for Cyprus were crazy --> Bulgaria :)).
Apart from general low cultural level of people visiting Sunny Beach (pretty everyone is smoking - parents in front of their children, grannies smoking in the sea, littering etc.), I think staying within an expensive resort with privat'ish beach might be not that bad and good value.
Smoking really was driving me mad.

Also I should say Bulgaria has beautiful nature/mountains, and Sofial and Plovdiv have a surprising amount of well-preserved and taken good care of ancient Roman ruins and cultured people.

On one of the holiday weather websites I noticed they offer dew point as a neasurement of comfort and it kind of makes sense. The higher dew point is the more sticky you feel :))
For Alanya dew point right now is 26 degrees, Corfu, Oristano (Sardinia) and Marmaris 22, Lindos (Rhodes) and Bodrum 21, Saranda (Albania) 20, Chania (Crete), Sunny Beach (Bulgaria) and Menorca 19, Altea 18, Albufeira and Mallorca 17, Benidorm 16, Budva (Montenegro) 14, Split (Croatia) 9

Agia Napa (Cyprus) 24 but I don't remember feeling too uncomfortable there.
