Teenage friendly city

KingCatMeowInSpace · 27/06/2024 12:32

I'm looking to book a city break for 2 adults/2 teens for going this July- have left it late. Where would people recommend that has things to see n lots of independant shops to wander about that teenage boys will like and cafes etc. thinking will get an Air BnB. Thanks

Berlin. Loads to see and do. It's big but doesn't feel overwhelming.

Amsterdam...some very interesting shops.

Edinburgh or Liverpool if you staying in UK.

pastaandpesto · 27/06/2024 12:33

Kraków 100%. Best city break we've ever done with our teens.

KingCatMeowInSpace · 27/06/2024 12:35

Should have said we've already done Rome n Barcelona n Amsterdam. Was thinking Paris but then remembered Olympics are on there. Dont need well known sights like we had in Rome but would prefer not Spain/Portugal type beach place.

Someone else had suggested Berlin to me - lots to see/do? Any specific area you'd recommend staying? Thinking an Air BnB rather than hotel but not sure

Copenhagen is a really great city break, one of my faves

PeachPairPlum · 27/06/2024 12:40

Budapest, Berlin.

Edinburgh in the Uk.

Tunnelsong · 27/06/2024 12:44

Krakow lovely. Visit to the salt mines (out of city centre) worthwhile and Auschwitz a hard visit but glad we did it.

city centre lovely to explore.

ReignOfError · 27/06/2024 12:44

Lisbon. Copenhagen. Athens. Manchester. Glasgow. Barcelona. New York City. Toronto.

Tunnelsong · 27/06/2024 12:46

Also second Liverpool if England. Great shops, lovely docks, lively city and Arcains (big building where you pay entrance fee and unlimited arcade games.

Great for street art (LFC) and Liver building tour good.

Kioki · 27/06/2024 12:51

Krakow -
Thermal spas, walking tours, markets, places to eat, Auschwitz, salt mines, wax museum was hilarious.

Budapest - loads of cool architecture, thermal spas, zoo is great, circus, boat tours.

You said no to Portugal but I do recommend Porto massively. Beautiful beautiful city. We went to a Porto match which was brilliant even though I'm not greatly into football.

Marrakesh -
Markets, water parks, Atlas Mountains, so much culture.

On my list... Coppenhagen, Prague, Riga..

Adding to what others have already shared about Krakow - the pinball museum, the torture museum (pay extra for the 'tour' :) ), lost souls alley, wolfpit tavern, be happy museum, womai museum, axe throwing. There was just so much to do that was perfect for teens.

And pierogi. So many pierogi!

We stayed in an AirBnb near the castle that was great and very good value. We could walk most places and used Bolt when we wanted to go a bit further afield (salt museums) or were feeling knackered.

Off to research all these places - thanks. What was name of area you stayed in? Sounds pretty central

The sections of the Berlin Wall Art. The Zoo. The Reichstag, the checkpoint charlie museum,

We stayed the the Mitte area as had read that that was a good place to stay - fairly central.

reluctantbrit · 27/06/2024 17:36

We are off to Berlin in August, we have a flat (Vrbo, not AirBnB) and there was quite a lot.
Try to look for something in Berlin Mitte (middle of Berlin).

There is tons to do and see, it really depends what you are interested in.
Palaces (Charlottenburg and Sanscoussi in Potsdam, short train ride),
WWII museums, Spy museum, museum about the Berlin Wall, the remaining Wall section,
The Zoo, Reichstag (need to book tickets for the dome in advance, it's free though), plenty of shopping
Deutschlandmuseum, a one hour tour through 12 epochs of German history.

You Need to be within a 10-15 minute walk if the market place. Krakow is not expensive so even hotels in the centre are doable

Cartwheelsarefun · 27/06/2024 18:25

If you chose Copenhagen I recommend Next House. We got a 6 bed dorm to ourselves but there are lots of options. Such a cool hostel, young people everywhere, with bars and games rooms, pool tables etc. We used the terrace kitchen a lot for meals to cook and chat with other families. Fantastic city too, nice cafes, shops and galleries etc and Tivoli theme park has some pretty scary rides, great for teens!

We stayed in an apartment just round the corner from the pinball museum.

Another one for Krakow - DS loved it. The Schindler museum to add to all the others. One of his favourite bits was sitting in the square at night with food just watching the world go by. Also the Jewish cemetery is worth visiting as it is a visual of how many families never returned.
Try and eat in the Jewish square too - the food is sensational. For lunches there are stalls everywhere selling zapiekanka really cheaply. (baguette style). There are often markets and festivals all over too.
