Begamo airport to Milan city centre

Hello

We are travelling to Milan in July landing at 2150 on a Friday night. It'll be me, DH, DD5 and our 3 month old baby. Ideally, we'd get a taxi, but I'm being quoted £160 online - is that right? And would we need to bring our own rear facing car seats? It's the only taxi we will take so I'd rather not lug the baby's massive seat with us for one journey (please don't get at me about safe travel - I know they should be strapped in ideally!).

Is there another way of doing it? The coach to Central Station and then the metro/train? Or is that madness late at night with a baby and a small child?

Thanks for any pointers! x

The problem is that Bergamo is not really a Milan airport. It is very far away. Any chance of changing your tickets to Malpensa or Linate?

in your shoes I would consider booking into an airport hotel. It is likely to take some time to get your luggage etc, and it is going to be very late. Milan metro is fine in the day, it gets emptier late at night, and the trains can be very infrequent. It isn’t like the tube in London for example. Unless your hotel is somewhere very central and well lit like Duomo, the journey is probably better done in daylight, with children who are rested and fed.

Solasum · 18/06/2024 06:09

Re car seats, they won’t be carrying two seats as standard, so definitely prebook

AttilaTheMeerkat · 18/06/2024 07:12

What solasum wrote. Bergamo is about an hours drive out from Milan and the last train from there into Milan leaves just after 10:00pm.

Linate is far nearer re Milan than Malpensa.

RoseWrites · 18/06/2024 07:25

Yes, only just realised that it's a 50 minute drive from Milan. It's a ryanair flight and they craftily marketed it as "Milan (Begamo)". I should have known better than to trust Ryanair :)

We won't have checked in baggage so should be relatively quick getting out the airport, but even so, it'll be very late for the children.

I think we'll have to take the taxi route. I have seen buses, but i'm not sure if that will be any fun for us or other other passengers so late at night...

As above, Milan (Bergamo) is in Bergamo as London (Stansted) is in Colchester.
If a taxi is £160, then I'd stay overnight in a hotel and get the train the next day.

Wafflefudge · 18/06/2024 08:45

Can you get a hotel in bergamo for a night.
Bergamo is lovely.
Then next day train from Bergamo to Milan is pretty easy.
Although personally I think Bergamo is nicer than Milan so would stay there instead.

AnnaMagnani · 18/06/2024 08:47

London Stansted is not in Colchester Confused

HollyGolightly4 · 18/06/2024 08:48

I'm jumping on this a little bit because people seem to know it pretty well! Should I spend two nights in Milan before lake como, or one night then head to Como?

Thank you and sorry!

gindreams · 18/06/2024 08:53

I think Bergamo looks nicer than Milan so I would definitely stay there for the night if you can

RoseWrites · 18/06/2024 10:17

Thanks everyone :)

I've booked a private transfer/taxi with two baby/child car seats for £97. Would be much less on a bus but the thought of dragging children and bags around to find the bus and then navigate a train/bus at the other end does not seem worth the saving!

For those who have said Begamo is nice, that's good to hear :) We are staying in Milan Friday to Tuesday to do the main sites and then getting the train to Begamo for our last day and night before we fly home. Cannot wait.

It's not in London either.

I was surprised recently flying with Ryanair to Rome and the airport they used was actually closer to the city than the 'proper' Rome airport, although it was very very small - only 12 gates and only about 4 flights in the 2 hours I was there.

It's not "in" anywhere, but if you carry on down the road past it, that's the first town you end up in!

Bishops Stortford would like a word Grin

You're coming at the. right time too, after a cool and very wet start to summer it's now hot. As I write this it's 33°c at lunch time here in Milan. Mae sure you got to Bergamo Alta (the upper part of the city) as that's the beautiful part you absolutely need to see.

TizerorFizz · 18/06/2024 13:00

@HollyGolightly4 Yes. Milan is hugely underrated. The Prada Foundation is great. There are amazing churches to see. Not just the cathedral. The castle and the shopping. Not to leave out the dining! The canal area is buzzy. Getting in from Linate is very easy. Direct bus.

TakeOnFlea · 18/06/2024 13:14

Bergamo is so much nicer than Milan. I'd change my accommodation and just visit Milan for the day in this situation. Stay in the Alta Citta, the airport bus will drive you straight there

Bjorkdidit · 18/06/2024 13:26

This thread has got me thinking that there could be a whole industry, or a blog/book or something about sightseeing in the place Ryanair actually take people to instead of the higher profile place that they claim to go to.

We arrived very late into Milan Bergamo last July and found a lovely little hotel on Booking.com for the night that was a 10 minute taxi trip before we headed to our main accommodation next day.
We have teens but it was definitely the right decision

blablausername · 18/06/2024 13:51

Obviously the OP has sorted it now so that's good, but we occasionally travel from Bergamo and usually book a room in a hotel nearby with a taxi service to and from airport.
They are often done for this reason and cater for people flying out in the early hours or those arriving late at night and give you room and a meal/ breakfast before setting off again. They are quite a number and are usually reasonably priced.

Solasum · 18/06/2024 14:19

@HollyGolightly4 for me it would depend on the time of year. Milan has enough to see for a few days, but is punishingly hot in the summer months. The Lakes are just gorgeous all the time.

I would do 2 nights in Milan as there is plenty to do. If it’s hot you may want to pace yourself.

TizerorFizz · 18/06/2024 15:55

@RoseWrites Theres no Prada Foundation or Last Supper in Bergamo. Depends what you want to see and do. I find it odd that Ryanair call Bergamo Milan. It’s clearly misnamed and Bergamo is, of course, lovely.

TakeOnFlea · 18/06/2024 15:58

"I find it odd that Ryanair call Bergamo Milan."

What else would they call it? The same as every other airline they call it by it's correct name, Milan Bergamo Confused

AnnaMagnani · 18/06/2024 16:03

There is no Last Supper in Bergamo but there is the Accademia Carrara which has the largest collection of Moroni in the world (plus an outstanding collection of Northern Italian artists).

You probably do recognise his work even if you don't know the name and none of the paint is peeling off either.
