Thinking of going to Pollensa area in Majorca in July with hubby and two kids (aged 8 and 6) has anyone ever been? Looking to hire a villa for a couple of weeks, any recommendations of where to stay, things to do any advice etc would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Loads of people like it still, i used to love it but its turned into blackpool - well not quite but i find it quite dirty now and full of working class

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 06/04/2008 21:48

Crikey Liesel. Working class?

gcf. We went a couple of years ago and although my children are older than yours I'm sure you'll have a fab time.

It's nothing like Blackpool.

We stayed in some apartments on the outskirts and hired a car so we could see alot of the island.

georgeclooneyfan · 06/04/2008 22:59

Thanks for the advice will take it all on board my kids haven't flown before so thought it would be a short trip for them, we are also in need of sun sunshine. Can't decide between florida and majorca for the summer that is, thought the humidity would be a bit unbearable in July Florida .

Thanks again

Pollensa itself (ie the inland bit) is rather posh and not at all like Blackpool! The coastal resport (Puerto Pollensa) is quite touristy... but I still wouldn't say Blackpool.

I really loved Pollensa - it's very beautiful and atmospheric, and full of actual Spaniards. There are loads of beautiful, quite remote places on Mallorca - it's not all bucket-and-spade.

We rented a villa through Simple Travel (I think it was). Highly recommended.

Liff · 07/04/2008 13:29

we also went last year and found the town beautiful and the surrounding area had loads to do for kids. We went through Simpson Travel and would highly recommend them.

georgeclooneyfan · 07/04/2008 16:07

Thanks policywonk and Liff for the advice I think it sounds like a nice place am very tempted to book it been through all the villa websites nearly and they all look very nice.

Thanks again

I've been to Puerto Pollensa twice now, and visited Pollensa and the surrounding areas both times. We went with a 12 year old and a 16 month old, and chose it for the short flight time.

We loved it there. Palma is nearby with its cathedral, and you must take the train from Palma to Soller through the mountains - it's absolutely gorgeous - Blackpool it ain't!

willali · 28/04/2008 13:03

Agree with "not blackpool" comments - we've been to Puierto Pollensa two years n a row now and it couldn't be further from the truth - a lovely beach around a curving bay, loads of great restaurants around the central square, day trips around the place. In my experience there were more boden clad families than the tattoed classes....

georgeclooneyfan · 28/04/2008 16:54

Thanks for the advice Willali have still not booked anything yet, did you stay in apartments or villa? W have been looking at villas with pool and including the flights from Aberdeen and two weeks in a villa it is almost £4000 that seems really expensive or do you know if this is the going rate all the villa companies I have looked at seem to be about £1300 upwards for one week in July and that would be for villas with only air conditioned bedrooms! Any advice would be most grateful.

Thanks

I've been to both Pollensa and Puerto Pollensa and whilst the latter is definately more "touristy", its a far cry from Blackpool

Have a look here for villas.

Flier · 28/04/2008 17:02

we stayed in a villa in Pollensa when ds was just over a year, it was with james Villas, althought we organised our own flights and car hire as was cheaper. Puerto Pollensa was lovely and, altho touristy, what would you expect? not at all blackpool

georgeclooneyfan · 28/04/2008 17:02

Thank you TillyScoutsmum that is one website I havent been on will try it now.

We liked this area - I can recommend Vintage Travel.

cardy · 28/04/2008 17:19

I've been to Pollensa 3 times in the past 4 years and really like (I am working class by the way) but I don't like Blackpool and it isn't anything like Benidorm or such like. it isn't tacky but during school holidays is does get a bit touristy.

We've stayed in a villa in about 2km from Pollensa 5Km from PP, which with a car, is perfect.

We've used James Villas and Villa Parade but last year we stayed in apartments on pine walk so that dds had some company/activies and after the initial shock it worked out really well.

I suggest that you hire a car and get some see some of the rest of the island esp along the north less touristy sreas.

hupa · 28/04/2008 17:21

We used this site to find a villa. We had a great time.

seb1 · 28/04/2008 17:23

Some friends use this company and say they are great villa plus

Ruthiebabes · 28/04/2008 20:19

We are going to Puerto Pollensa for the first time in June, recommended by a few friends as a great family resort. Hope it is nothing like Blackpool.

We booked a 2 bed apartment using Owners Direct. £720 for 11 nights. We then booked flights separately. Villas are generally more expensive. Worth considering an apartment as many are in small blocks so pool is never too busy. (The apartment we have booked is only one of 12).

Try looking on such websites where people rent out there own villas/apartments.

georgeclooneyfan · 28/04/2008 20:25

Thank you Ruthiebabes for the advice we had thought of apartments originally as my kids have not been abroad and in that heat before. We thought it would be better to stay for 10 or 11 nights at least that it still feels like a longish holiday instead of the 7 nights or 14 would maybe be too long, and the villas dont let you stay for the 10 nights etc it is only full weeks. Also if they didn't like it which I am sure they will as soon as they see a swimming pool then it wouldnt be as long or that expensive either, sounds like a good deal you got. I wish we could go out with the school hols it would be a bit cooler and cheaper but I am sure I will find something.

Thanks again

OMG, if people on here think that Puerto Pollensa is like Blackpool I hope for their sakes they never venture into Alcudia...

We went when DD was 18mo, we all loved it, the beach there is beautiful. Pollensa itself was a bit quiet and (we found) dull, but Puerto Pollensa seemed very upmarket compared with other parts of Mallorca nearby! Lovely ice-cream parlour at the start of the Pine walk by the sand sculptor - deffo recommend that!

cardy · 29/04/2008 13:33

So true about Alcudia. We went for a trip whilst staying in Pollensa....we stop for 10 mins then decided it was time to leave!

We stayed here one year which was perfect
playa mar

There's entertainment if you want it, but you can take it or leave it. The location is very quiet (at the end of pine walks) with a lovely walk to teh marina along the beach.

mousemole · 29/04/2008 15:38

try Villa Parade for wonderful villas. Well priced and beautiful. Sorry search on google cant do the link thingy

georgeclooneyfan · 29/04/2008 16:23

Thanks Lovecat, Cardy and Mousemole for the advice really appreciate the help, will look into the websites you recommended.

Hi georgeclooneyfan

I have just got out all our holiday stuff. We booked our apartment this year through puertopllensa dot com. Click on villas/apts to rent and there are loads. Some are only 450 per wk for a 2 bed with pool. Some still have availability for school hols. The sooner you book it the cheaper the flights will be.
