Where should we go on holiday

So I'm 58 disabled (walking sticks) due to rheumatoid arthritis. Warm weather is great for me as is swimming in a pool/the sea. My hubby is 69 he hates the thought of lying around in the heat, he doesn't swim. He would be more into culture. He also wouldn't like a long flight. Where should we go on holiday?

Could you do a trip to somewhere like Sorrento in Italy? Stay in a lovely hotel with a pool and get your husband a dose of culture with trips down the Amalfi coast by bus to places like Positano and Amalfi. Some of these places may be too hilly for you so he can leave you at the pool or find you a spot for lunch while he explores. Sorrento itself is also nice

Barcelona - hotel with a rooftop pool and culture to explore for him

cherryassam · 04/06/2024 19:36

I’d also suggest a city with a beach - or a city break in a hotel with a pool.

Cities with beaches:

Barcelona
Lisbon
Faro
Dubrovnik
Split
Malaga
Alicante
Valencia
Palma
Bodrum
Paphos
Trieste
Nice

We are going to an adults only hotel, on the beach front at Benalmadina next week. There is a lovely, long, flat promenade from the marina to Torremolinos. Lots of bars, restaurants and cafes. For culture, a short bus or train ride into Malaga, or the other way to Marbella. Ronda or Gibraltar. Short flight, lots to do, usually sunny. Best of both. My DH isn't keen on sitting round the pool, but there is so much nearby he us happy there.

A coastal city like Málaga or Barcelona would work. Palmanova in Mallorca is close to Palma city with very flat promenade and great beach.
Benalmedina as pp says is nice but hilly in parts.

CCLCECSC · 05/06/2024 11:19

Malaga would be a good fit

Springwatch123 · 05/06/2024 11:21

A cruise may suit you? They go from Southampton so you don’t have to fly.

TwigTheWonderKid · 05/06/2024 11:28

When are you planning on going?

pinkgin79 · 05/06/2024 11:29

What's your budget?

The Black Forest, Germany. Lots of culture, some thermal spas/swimming complexes and lovely scenery.

CrunchySnow · 05/06/2024 12:05

Malta! Great mix of beaches and old towns to explore

I want to share our recent summer vacation in Switzerland. We are simply delighted! Imagine majestic Alps, crystal clear lakes and incredibly cozy towns. It's so great in the summer: we've hiked amazing trails, biked and enjoyed the local cuisine - it's fabulous! If you haven't been to Switzerland in the summer yet, I highly recommend it. It's a place worth visiting at least once in your life.

By the way, here is an interesting resource where you can learn more about vacations in Switzerland

Cruise would cater for both, it can be as busy or quiet as you like

longdistanceclaraclara · 05/06/2024 16:26

Another vote for a cruise

mitogoshi · 05/06/2024 16:39

Sicily, beautiful island, warm lots of historical places to visit, amazing food and wine, not overrun with Brits abroad types (you know what I mean) and swam in the sea daily before breakfast. I don't have disabilities but I saw people using compact scooters around the archaeological sites if walking is too much, the kind compact for travel.

mitogoshi · 05/06/2024 16:43

I'd also look at cruises as they are pretty good for disabilities (check the rules thoroughly including informing them of equipment you need and registering that you need help in case of emergency, these are maritime safety rules not line specific) a med cruise out of Southampton means no flying (assuming you are British) there's even a coach that takes you to Southampton, and each day you could either both disembark to sightsee or some days he could go alone and you could be pampered! (Lots of solo travellers so he wouldn't be the only person on the tour alone)

Please let me know whether you can travel internationally or just nationally?

Cascais in Portugal was a wonderful holiday for us. It’s the Atlantic so the sea is chilly enough but I liked it. It’s close to Lisbon and Sintra - lots of cultural days out. Nice town itself, excellent food. Big tourist destination so they have lots of hotels but it doesn’t feel soulless as it’s a hot spots for the Portuguese as well. But it means it would be easy for you to get around.

Also lake Garda . Lots of things to do and see. Very easy to get around and good places to stay but definitely not a fly and flop destination for your DH.
