Where would you go on a family holiday for around a month?

Basically, I'm likely to have an extended period of gardening leave as a result of a rubbish time at work. My husband is a contractor so could take a break.

Our kids are ages 9 and 6.

If you had around a month to go somewhere, where would you go?

Budget... Not sure. Willing to spend a bit and we could put our place in London on Airbnb or something, but ideally not the most wxpe location as it's quite a while.

Thanks in advance for ideas. Even if we never do it it's a nice fantasy but I feel we shouldn't waste the opportunity.

I used to spend a month+ in the South of France when I was a child. I adored it. You could do a bit of a tour around France/Spain/Italy if you'd like to visit more than one place.

Is buy inter rail tickets and see where we end up - one backpack each and a train ticket!

DisforDarkChocolate · 29/05/2024 18:26

I would do lots of Scandinavian.

If I had a month and needed to be closeish to the UK I would rent some sort of nice caravan and do a road trip of Europe. Taking our time and just relaxing.

Next year though for various family reasons we are planning a 5 week trip to Australia.

My daughter and I went to Thailand for a month, she was about 7 or 8. We had the best time! Food, transport and accommodation is really cheap.

cherryassam · 29/05/2024 18:32

I would make the most of the time and do something longer haul - although it depends a little on what time of year

Some ideas:

Vietnam
Thailand
Canada (pricey though)
Costa Rica
West Coast USA (California, Oregon, Washington)
Namibia
Nepal
Malaysia
Indonesia

How busy do you want to be? Based in one place and a bit of travelling? Or a multi stop holiday?

I'd be tempted by a US road trip but my destinations

heretodestroyyou · 29/05/2024 18:36

Sorry. My destinations wouldn't really be that kid friendly.

dizzydizzydizzy · 29/05/2024 18:38

I assume you mean over the summer.

Sardinia is a lovely chilled place with beautiful beaches. We went the once in early September and had a lovely little house next to the beach. I don't know what it would be like in school holidays.

Tobago? Flight there is expensive but it is not too expensive there. Gorgeous beaches, beautiful nature, good food and such lovely people.

We did LA, Hawaii, NY home when ours were 9 and 11 and it was amazing - 4 days in LA, 3 weeks in Hawaii, 3 days in NYC :)

LoudSnoringDog · 29/05/2024 18:40

Either Thailand or around Europe

Daijoubudesu · 29/05/2024 18:41

Australia

justpeachy1234 · 29/05/2024 18:42

I would highly recommend Sri Lanka! So much to do and relatively affordable. Temples, surfing, safari, turtles, tea fields, hikes, beaches, waterfalls, scenic train journeys etc. We had a driver for a month who took us all around the island.

Or Asia.... again loads to do for all ages and cheap living.

Do it, you only live once and sounds like a great opportunity for an adventure!

longdistanceclaraclara · 29/05/2024 18:42

I'd hire an RV, one of the massive ones and do through the US Rocky Mountains and over to the west coast via the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone.

Or something smaller and drive to Europe and see where we ended up.

MaraScottie · 29/05/2024 18:42

You'd see a lot of Japan in a month.
Alternatively anywhere in South East Asia.

ShaunaSadeki · 29/05/2024 18:43

Thailand or island hopping in Greece

LilacK · 29/05/2024 18:50

South of France, somewhere between Montpellier and Beziers. So much to see and do, and just a couple of hours drive into Spain. Rent somewhere near a lake for swimming/watersports.

Wellthisisterrible · 29/05/2024 18:52

South East Asia.
Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia.
Incredible places, amazing people, food and beaches.

Nonewclothes2024 · 29/05/2024 18:53

Thailand or round Europe.

LizzieBennett73 · 29/05/2024 18:53

I would take the kids to Switzerland and explore the cities, lakes and mountains by rail.

mitogoshi · 29/05/2024 18:57

Se Asia, cheap as long as you avoid the big name hotels

Blacknailer · 29/05/2024 19:00

Awesome ideas
Yes I should have said, in the summer! Would NZ be cold then? I like the idea of going somww long haul that's too far for a normal length trip.

Friends have done this:

  • one did Croatia/ Slovenia area I think (not entirely sure where but these countries definitely came up in conversation)
  • another inter railed - France, Switzerland, Italy. They got a flight back.
  • another just hired a glamorous house in California for a month.
EveryKneeShallBow · 29/05/2024 19:10

Definitely Japan.

confusedlots · 29/05/2024 19:12

Definitely long haul if you have the time. I would do Asia - I love Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Singapore. Never been to Japan but that would be amazing too. Very jealous, you have to make the most of it!
