Packing cubes - great idea or hype?

canyouseemyhousefromhere · 28/05/2024 00:17

I have been hearing about these packing cubes. Are they a great idea or just something to waste my money on & take up extra space in the suitcase.

Going on our first holiday since 2019 🥳 ☀️ and wondering whether I should try these.

Advice on type & size would be appreciated too (so many on Amazon!). 2 adults on a 2 week cruise (so no weight limit).

Thanks 🚢

I have one to go inside my Cabin Max rucksack so I can fit everything in. Recently took a four night trip and got everything I needed in and no need to check it in! (I went on a basis budget fare).

I did the same a couple of weeks ago and managed a week’s holiday to the sun!

BoxOfCats · 28/05/2024 12:50

@Brefugee Yes, actually I have a travel net laundry bag where all my dirty things to be washed go. But could just as easily use a cube.

quizzys · 28/05/2024 13:13

I don't get on with them at all. I find i can fit far more in without them. I do however use ziploc bags for smaller things and t shirts. I expel the air from them to flatten and am good to go. i bring some extras for the return packing ie washing!

Flossflower · 28/05/2024 13:55

I love them but I do holidays where I only stay at each place for maximum of 3/4 days and then on to the next place. If you want something in the bottom of the case you just take out A few packing cubes.

thedendrochronologist · 28/05/2024 14:18

We go loads of cruise and use them. We often do washing in the cruise and pack it all back in the cubes to bring home. PO is free laundry rooms, princess you have to pay for the laundrette and RCI its service only.

Yes I always do all my washing before we leave so it's not a chore when I get home. We've been on a few cruises (only with P&O) & just love the park up & you're on holiday - no flights, no transfers - bliss. We haven't been able to get away at all since 2019 due to DH health so I'm really looking forward to it and want to maximise the stress free aspect.

@canyouseemyhousefromhere have an amazing time! Sounds like you are long overdue a holiday! 🚢 ☀️ 🌊

We usually fly cruise all over the world but next year we have week to Norway from Southampton and I can't wait for it being so easy! In contrast to April where somehow we have 6 flights!!

canyouseemyhousefromhere · 28/05/2024 14:47

@thedendrochronologist
Thank you. It's just such a breeze compared to airports. I hope you enjoy your trip. My ds & his gf went on a cruise to Norway last year as it worked out cheaper and easier than flying/hotels. Had a wonderful time.

I got a few sets years ago. I don't tend to bother using them as my bag has compartments, but DS2 loved them for his cadet trips and DH uses some each week as he works away in the week.

ChimneyPot · 28/05/2024 15:38

Brilliant for kids going on camps and residential trips. One each for underwear, socks, t shirts etc and the a mesh laundry bag for everything when it is dirty.

Rainbowshit · 28/05/2024 15:56

Can anyone link to a cheap set they would recommend so I can try them out please?

I really wish I'd had them when I was in Norway in February as there was nothing to unpack our suitcase into, and it drove me crackers living out of a suitcase all week.

I recommend Amazon basics, good quality. Can't link, as my particular set is no longer available.

I've had them 6 years, still as good as new despite multiple touring holidays .

Range of size options available

OrangeBlossom28 · 28/05/2024 17:26

I've been looking at the choices for these on Amazon. We met up with friends on Sunday and were talking holidays and they highly recommended them. We are doing a road trip to the South of France this summer and sharing a large suitcase. I definitely think I'll be getting some!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 28/05/2024 17:52

Love them. I think mine were £2.50 from ikea. I bought 3 sets.

Jeezitneverends · 28/05/2024 17:54

I’ve had good ones from Home Bargains-£5 for 3

Scottishskifun · 28/05/2024 18:00

I love them very easy means I can put kids into one and mine into another DH also uses for his stuff.

We always mix clothes across suitcases and it makes it easy to do so.

I would say go for sturdy ones with the black mesh rather then some of the cheaper ones. I found eeno or savisto to be good.

I also always take swim wear and 2 changes in hand luggage for everyone in a medium sized one and the space it saves is massive (😂 can you tell we have had luggage go missing more then once?!)

Topseyt123 · 28/05/2024 18:02

Not something I can see the point of. I don't think I'd use them at all.

MaryFuckingFerguson · 28/05/2024 18:02

I was bought some as a gift 🥴 but I really can’t see the point of them. I’ve shoved them in the loft.

Pillowfights · 28/05/2024 18:13

I can highly recommend compression packing cubes - I recently bought some cheap ones (dh very sceptical as a brilliant case packer) which came in extremely useful when packing for 2 of us for a week with only one bag. Dh now a convert!

Mercurial123 · 28/05/2024 19:10

They've been around for years it's not hype. I bought mine in 2012 and they help me keep organised.

jeaux90 · 29/05/2024 08:32

I have used them if we are doing long haul with multiple destinations with my DD15.

Really helpful to spread clothes over two suitcases (in case one gets lost) and it means they are quickly accessible etc.

When I am travelling to one destination with her I don't bother. I just roll everything so you can see whose is what as you unpack

I still split the clothes though.

Solpa · 29/05/2024 11:43

These are the ones I got from Amazon. I like the fact that the lid is mesh so you can see at a glance what's in. https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B07WC2MYXR?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title
We stayed at a small hotel with no drawers and they were very useful.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 24/08/2025 09:12

Really good for multi-centre holidays, or hotel rooms with shit storage. And I like them for little weekend breaks too, for organised bag reasons 🙂 I'm away at the moment, just for one night, and have used them

I'm a very light packer, so I don't have an issue with them taking up too much room.

sunshinegirl28 · 24/08/2025 09:15

They have been amazing for us! We are going to 4 different ent places on our holiday! Is amazing just throwing the cubes in the cupboard and then back in the suitcase to move on to the next place!
