A month in Singapore, would you go?

Just that really. DH has been asked to work there for a month potentially myself and 2 kids (11 &7) can go too. We love to travel but haven't been to Asia with the kids yet. I would be largely with the children by myself except for weekends. I have heard its very safe.
With the horrible news about Singapore Airlines yesterday that has also concerned me only because so many people are coming out saying they also experienced severe turbulence on that route....

Thoughts? Also if you are familiar with Singapore what would be the best area for us to stay in?

For a month?. Definitely

i have been a few times though not recently. Loads to do, very safe. Hot! Most decent appartment blocks will have an outdoor pool.

check the salary he’ll be getting is suitable though. Singapore is not particularly cheap.

you can also get cheap flights to Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia etc

AGlinnerOfHope · 22/05/2024 07:52

Definitely go!

It’s been years ago for me, so can’t give any current recommendations.

It’s a very ‘tame’ Asian country. Very mixed population, so you don’t really feel out of place.

Very well organised and easy to navigate.

I have no idea about costs there, now. Worth checking as nothing is more miserable than being unable to afford what you want to do!

In my day food and drink was really cheap.

The night safari is a special experience.

Clearinguptheclutter · 22/05/2024 07:54

If your dh was working I’d def take myswlf and the kids off to somewhere like Krabi in Thailand Monday-Friday (once, not every week!)

BitOutOfPractice · 22/05/2024 07:54

Will the kids go to school there or will you take them out / in school holidays? That would be my only concern. Other than that I’d jump at the chance.

MaryFuckingFerguson · 22/05/2024 07:55

Would it be in the school summer holidays? If so, yes I would definitely go.

I’ve only been once, and only for a week but I loved it. My husband goes for work about once a year and always finds loads to do.

albertoross · 22/05/2024 07:56

I don't think the turbulence should be a deciding factor here. If you're concerned then wear your seatbelt at all times

BigDahliaFan · 22/05/2024 07:56

Of course.

Theyweretheworstoftimes · 22/05/2024 07:57

Go definitely. Singapore is brilliant and you can travel easily to lots of other places. It's a great place to be based.

Ilovemyshed · 22/05/2024 07:58

In a heartbeat. Imagine the experience for the kids, amazing! It will be a lifetime memory.

crumpet · 22/05/2024 07:59

100% go. Have an amazing time. Then once DH has finished work after the month is up, have a family holiday in the region before coming home

Theyweretheworstoftimes · 22/05/2024 07:59

Two things, it's not very big and the MRT is much more comprehensive than it use to be. (MRT subway, tube equivalent)

So basing yourself should be easier as it's not that big.

It's very expensive.

selondon28 · 22/05/2024 08:03

Assuming it doesn’t clash with school then I’d definitely go. My parents lived there when I was in my 20s so I spent a lot of time there. It had loads to do and very easy access to other parts of Asia for travel. It’s a modern and clean city, supermarkets are easy to navigate, great medical care etc. It’s obviously a foreign country with plenty to experience but lots is familiar enough that it isn’t intimidating to find your way and everything you need when living there. Holland Village was a nice place to live.

SherryPalmer · 22/05/2024 08:04

I live in Singapore and have flown that route a lot and never had much turbulence. It was just very unlucky for that plane.

singapore is fun but a month is a long time to spend there. Definitely plan some side trips.

CharlotteRumpling · 22/05/2024 08:06

Course I would go and take myself off to Langkawi in Malaysia or Krabi as pp said. The turbulence is irrelevant.

Maddy70 · 22/05/2024 08:07

Yes of course i would go. I love Singapore.

rongy · 22/05/2024 08:08

I've been to Singapore maybe 20 times. There's not a lot to do and it's so hot
Also v expensive unless you eat at the markets
But you can get to anywhere in Asia v cheaply for short trips

rwa818 · 22/05/2024 08:09

A friend lived there for a couple of years. Very safe and amazing food, I would definitely go for a month! She didn't like it for long term though mostly because of the weather and it being very busy and built up

Chickenuggetsticks · 22/05/2024 08:09

Yeah definitely, just go, once you get the hand of getting around you’ll be fine.

QueSyrahSyrah · 22/05/2024 08:09

100% go! We went to Singapore for the first time last year and loved it, as a PP already mentioned I'd say it's a very light introduction to Asia for the children, with English as one of the primary languages and very orderly compared to the chaos of some big cities. A great base to visit other places for weekends too.

saraclara · 22/05/2024 08:11

If someone else is paying I'd go like a shot.
We used to have stopovers in Singapore or Malaysia on the way to visit our family in Australia, when our kids were young. They loved it. Singapore is a great base for side trips if you're there for a month.

The Singapore airlines event was a freak one. And it could have been any airline on the way to any country along or beyond that flight path, so don't give that another thought.

AGlinnerOfHope · 22/05/2024 08:20

It’s very hot and humid so expect to be very washed out the first week. Get used to the heat and humidity then and you can do what you like after that. Don’t spend week one in air con hotel room and shops, spend it walking around near the hotel, carrying a water bottle, stopping for a cold drink and a sit down at regular intervals. After the jet lag and climate adjustment, you’ll be able to do days out and explore to your heart’s content.

Sunshineandpinkclouds · 22/05/2024 08:41

I would def go but agree the humidity is a killer. If you can make sure you get an apartment with a shared pool.

There's not much to do in Singapore - prob enough for a week max so it would be good to plan some mini trips to Ko Samui or Bali if finances allow.

I visited a relative there years ago for 3 weeks and with a couple of long weekends away I was still a bit bored by the end so maybe a month is too long?

Durdledore · 22/05/2024 08:42

In a heartbeat. And at those ages, sod school - it’ll be a life-changing experience for them.

AliceMcK · 22/05/2024 08:42

Yes yes yes, love Singapore. DHs work have offices there and I’ve told him any opportunities to move there I would jump at the chance!

ImCamembertTheBigCheese · 22/05/2024 08:43

I'd go, what an experience!
