A month in Singapore, would you go?

Just that really. DH has been asked to work there for a month potentially myself and 2 kids (11 &7) can go too. We love to travel but haven't been to Asia with the kids yet. I would be largely with the children by myself except for weekends. I have heard its very safe.
With the horrible news about Singapore Airlines yesterday that has also concerned me only because so many people are coming out saying they also experienced severe turbulence on that route....

Thoughts? Also if you are familiar with Singapore what would be the best area for us to stay in?

You can get ferry's to Indonesia, Bintan and Batam islands. That's a great weekend break. So much to do, I lived there for a few years and would do this 100%

Go Go Go Go Go!!!!

Oh and yes to the Night Safari at the zoo. It's magic. And Sentosa island.

I am dying of envy!

if the company propose to pay for BA or Singapore Airlines, I would suggest you offer to go on emirates or Qatar as a family which will safe significantly on the (additional) costs.

Valid point but of course that means a transit/connection in the Gulf for the OP and family verses (certainly ex London) non- stop with BA or Singapore Airlines.

Some people are saying there’s not enough to do, but even if you do find that to be the case, it’s still worth going for the different lifestyle and a great experience for the kids. Personally, it’s far from being my favourite part of SE Asia - though I know people who love it there - but even so I wouldn’t miss this opportunity if I were you. Plus it’s ideally situated for travel round the region as others have said.

We took a ferry from Singapore to Bintan; took about 45 mins. Bintan is an island in Indonesia but super accessible to Singapore and very popular, so book ahead. We had a fabulous time.

Only as a base to visit other nearby countries. Singapore is hot, expensive and as boring as batshit.

So not true. Sentosa is fab, and the WW2 sites fascinating for kids. Orchid gardens beautiful. The night food market is great. The Indian temple. The mix of cultures. The quayside restaurants. Before you even get to shopping malls (stock up on Japanese or Korean skincare). Loved Singapore.

@Sockmate123 - absolutely go!

I lived in Singapore on two expat postings (with our kids) for a total of 8 years and we all really enjoyed it. I’ve just been there for a couple of weeks, although staying with friends and went to Vietnam in-between.

You asked about places to stay; forget about staying in an hotel for a month…..it will drive you crazy!

I would suggest a serviced apartment (where you get bedding and towels changed and cleaning) but your own ‘flat’ where you have a washing machine/dryer and a kitchen….for a month you won’t want to be dining out morning, noon and night and will want to have breakfast and some meals without having to go out and spend more money! They all usually have a swimming pool and some also have a gym and even a ‘residents’ barbecue or cocktail evening once a week.

I would suggest the serviced apartments (they have two or even three bedrooms) at Great World City (adjacent to a shopping mall with a supermarket, cinema…and a Marks & Spencers!). Great location!

Also Fraser Suites serviced apartments at River Valley. Nice pool but not quite as convenient for amenities compared to Great World.

There are other serviced apartments too of course.

Also top tip: get a debit card which doesn’t have international charges on transactions. We used our Chase cards on public transport (the buses and MRT are great!) which you can use to pay for fares using a tap and go method (similar to London) but you tap in on entry and exit. Very inexpensive.

Also the South East Asian version of Uber is “Grab” so you could also download the App on your phone. Most buildings (shops/restaurants/museums ) have free wifi but we bought a cheap iSIM for our phones.

Can offer lots of advice…..but do post back here if you are definitely going…..what a super opportunity!
